Flight Test: A Key Milestone for Climate-Neutral Aircraft Concepts Validation and Certification
The global aviation industry has been massively impacted by the COVID crisis which lead to a collapse of the traffic and urged the need for a climate-neutral aviation. The sector is undergoing great mutations with the emergence of an urban air mobility based on eVTOL modules, electric and hydrogen airplanes for the short –haul transport and fuel efficient engines combined with sustainable aviation fuels for the long-haul flights. For years, Safran Data Systems's turn-key solutions for data collection, recording, transmission and processing have given aircraft manufacturers an edge on their flight test campaigns. Based on its expertise Safran Data Systems aims at assisting aircraft manufacturers in the validation and certification of tomorrow’s concepts by expanding its portfolio on flight test instrumentation solutions for electric, hydrogen and emission efficient aircrafts. Proof-of-concepts are conducted to explore new innovative solutions such as HVDC electrical systems monitoring.International Foundation for TelemeteringProceedings from the International Telemetering Conference are made available by the International Foundation for Telemetering and the University of Arizona Libraries. How to Reconcile COTS Components and Tailored Future-Proof Data Acquisition System in Flight Test Instrumentation
During decades, FTI (Flight Test Instrumentation) systems were based on home-made or build-to-spec designs to address the specificities of each test article and the habits of each instrumentation engineers. However, thanks to decades of standardization efforts, the flight test community progressively took benefits of the interoperability brought by the products and the instrumentation suppliers converted their offer into COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) product lines. Despite the obvious benefits of the COTS approach (lead time, maturity, cost, maintenance, etc.), the focus on the mainstream needs have marginalized some features that brought a lot of value to some instrumentation engineers who now usually must complete their instrumentation system with custom items to meet their former expectations. The aim of this paper is to present how FTI system based on COTS components can be tailored to embrace the uniqueness of each program and ensure future-proof capabilities, through modules that allow hardware and software customizations with a seamless integration into Safran Data Systems COTS solution ecosystem.International Foundation for TelemeteringProceedings from the International Telemetering Conference are made available by the International Foundation for Telemetering and the University of Arizona Libraries. Paving the Way to Wireless Fiber Optic Sensing Applied to Helicopter Rotor Blade Instrumentation and Monitoring
Between 2018 and 2021, Airbus Helicopters and Safran Data Systems have conducted an innovation project called HIRIS in the frame of a European project aiming at developing a new wireless technology for helicopter rotor instrumentation and included operational Flight Tests on the field during 10 months and 60h flight hours. In the meantime, the interest for Fiber Optic Sensing (FOS) technologies has grown up in the aerospace domain for various structural and environmental monitoring use cases. Safran Data Systems, Safran Tech and FiSens have paved a way to design an ultra-compact optical interrogator compliant with the airborne environments and integrated in a modular Data Acquisition Unit. This paper aims at demonstrating that the latest wireless instrumentation techniques associated with innovative FOS technologies open the capabilities to instrument and monitor helicopter rotor elements such as Rotors blades with an unprecedented level of performances, reliability and low intrusiveness.International Foundation for TelemeteringProceedings from the International Telemetering Conference are made available by the International Foundation for Telemetering and the University of Arizona Libraries.
