The effects of tides on swash statistics on an intermediate beach
Swash hydrodynamics were investigated on an intermediate beach using runup data obtained from video images. Under mild, near-constant, offshore wave conditions, the presence of a sandbar and the tidally controlled water depth over its crest determined whether most of the incoming waves broke before reaching the shoreline. This forced a change in the pattern of wave energy dissipation across the surf zone between low and high tide, which was reflected by changes to swash on time scales of a few hours. Significant runup height (Rs, defined as 4 times the standard deviation of the waterline time series), was found to vary by a factor of 2 between low tide, when most of the waves were breaking over the sandbar (Rs/Hs ≈ 1.5, where Hs is the offshore significant wave height) and high tide, when the waves were barely breaking (Rs/Hs ≈ 2.7). The increase in wave energy dissipation during low tide was also associated with changes in swash maxima distribution, a decrease in mean swash period, and increasing energy at infragravity frequencies. Bispectral analysis suggested that this infragravity modulation might have been connected with the presence of secondary waves
The program in electronic music composition and musical production at the School of the Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco
This paper presents the program in electronic music composition and musical production at the School of the Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (http://www.esart.ipcb.pt). This study program offers a 1st cycle degree and is functioning since the academic year of 2005/2006. At the conference, we will present the curriculum of the program, some recent work by the students, and the next phase in the program development, which includes making contacts with people and institutions to further develop the program through ERASMUS exchanges of faculty and students, hiring of new faculty members, and eventual creation of an European partnership for a 2nd cycle degree. Keywords: New academic programs in electronic music, electronic music, musical production, multimedia
A CONTOUR-BASED JAZZ WALKING BASS GENERATOR
This paper describes a contour-based algorithm for the real- time automatic generation of jazz walking bass lines, fol- lowing a given harmonic progression. A brief description of the walking bass procedure will be presented, and also a brief survey on some common implementations and tech- niques.
This algorithm was implemented in the Max/MSP graphi- cal programming environment
Coexistence of Vulvar Dowling-Degos Disease and Seborrhoeic Keratosis
Dowling-Degos disease is a rare autosomal dominant inherited pigmentary disorder, mostly confined to the flexures. Diagnosis is established based on the clinical and histopathological correlation. The authors describe the clinical case of a female patient with vulvar involvement and multiple seborrhoeic keratoses on her face, neck, and upper trunk. Major and minor clinical manifestations of Dowling-Degos disease are discussed, with particular emphasis on the genital location of the lesions, which is a rare finding. Also the presence of seborrhoeic keratosis is discussed as a coincidence or a true-associated phenomenon
Quantum Kalb-Ramond Field in D-dimensional de Sitter Spacetimes
In this work we investigate the quantum theory of the Kalb-Ramond fields
propagating in dimensional de Sitter spacetimes using the dynamic invariant
method developed by Lewis and Riesenfeld [J. Math. Phys. 10, 1458 (1969)] to
obtain the solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. The wave
function is written in terms of a number quantity satisfying of the
Milne-Pinney equation, whose solution can be expressed in terms of two
independent solutions of the respective equation of motion. We obtain the exact
solution for the quantum Kalb-Ramond field in the de Sitter background and
discuss its relation with the Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond model
