    Yukawa potentials in systems with partial periodic boundary conditions II : Lekner sums for quasi-two dimensional systems

    Yukawa potentials may be long ranged when the Debye screening length is large. In computer simulations, such long ranged potentials have to be taken into account with convenient algorithms to avoid systematic bias in the sampling of the phase space. Recently, we have provided Ewald sums for quasi-two dimensional systems with Yukawa interaction potentials [M. Mazars, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, {\bf 126}, 056101 (2007) and M. Mazars, {\it Mol. Phys.}, Paper I]. Sometimes, Lekner sums are used as an alternative to Ewald sums for Coulomb systems. In the present work, we derive the Lekner sums for quasi-two dimensional systems with Yukawa interaction potentials and we give some numerical tests for pratical implementations. The main result of this paper is to outline that Lekner sums cannot be considered as an alternative to Ewald sums for Yukawa potentials.     Fluctuating fire regimes and their historical effects on genetic variation in an endangered shrubland specialist

    The Pleistocene was characterized by worldwide shifts in community compositions. Some of these shifts were a result of changes in fire regimes, which influenced the distribution of species belonging to fire-dependent communities. We studied an endangered juniper–oak shrubland specialist, the black-capped vireo (Vireo atricapilla). This species was locally extirpated in parts of Texas and Oklahoma by the end of the 1980s as a result of habitat change and loss, predation, brood parasitism, and anthropogenic fire suppression. We sequenced multiple nuclear loci and used coalescence methods to obtain a deeper understanding of historical population trends than that typically available from microsatellites or mtDNA. We compared our estimated population history, a long-term history of the fire regime and ecological niche models representing the mid-Holocene, last glacial maximum, and last interglacial. Our Bayesian skyline plots showed a pattern of historical population fluctuation that was consistent with changing fire regimes. Genetic data suggest that the species is genetically unstructured, and that the current population should be orders of magnitude larger than it is at present. We suggest that fire suppression and habitat loss are primary factors contributing to the recent decline of the BCVI, although the role of climate change since the last glacial maximum is unclear at present

    Effective interactions between inclusions in complex fluids driven out of equilibrium

    The concept of fluctuation-induced effective interactions is extended to systems driven out of equilibrium. We compute the forces experienced by macroscopic objects immersed in a soft material driven by external shaking sources. We show that, in contrast with equilibrium Casimir forces induced by thermal fluctuations, their sign, range and amplitude depends on specifics of the shaking and can thus be tuned. We also comment upon the dispersion of these shaking-induced forces, and discuss their potential application to phase ordering in soft-materials.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, to appear in PR

    Impacts of biomass production at civil airports on grassland bird conservation and aviation strike risk

    Growing concerns about climate change, foreign oil dependency, and environmental quality have fostered interest in perennial native grasses (e.g., switchgrass [Panicum virgatum]) for bioenergy production while also maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem function. However, biomass cultivation in marginal landscapes such as airport grasslands may have detrimental effects on aviation safety as well as conservation efforts for grassland birds. In 2011–2013, we investigated effects of vegetation composition and harvest frequency on seasonal species richness and habitat use of grassland birds and modeled relative abundance, aviation risk, and conservation value of birds associated with biomass crops. Avian relative abundance was greater in switchgrass monoculture plots during the winter months, whereas Native Warm-Season Grass (NWSG) mixed species plantings were favored by species during the breeding season. Conversely, treatment differences in aviation risk and conservation value were not biologically significant. Only 2.6% of observations included avian species of high hazard to aircraft, providing support for semi-natural grasslands as a feasible landcover option at civil airports. Additionally, varied harvest frequencies across a mosaic of switchgrass monocultures and NWSG plots allows for biomass production with multiple vegetation structure options for grassland birds to increase seasonal avian biodiversity and habitat use

    Charge-density-wave instability in the Holstein model with quartic anharmonic phonons

    The molecular-crystal model, that describes a one-dimensional electron gas interacting with quartic anharmonic lattice vibrations, offers great potentials in the mapping of a relatively wide range of low-dimensional fermion systems coupled to optical phonons onto quantum liquids with retarded interactions. Following a non-perturbative approach involving non-Gaussian partial functional integrations of lattice degrees of freedom, the exact expression of the phonon-mediated two-electron action for this model is derived. With the help of Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation the charge-density-wave instability is examined in the sequel, with particular emphasis on the effect of the quartic anharmonic phonons on the charge-density-wave transition temperature.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Louro-pardo (Cordia trichotoma (Vell.) Arráb. ex Steud.) é uma espécie florestal nativa, da família Boraginaceae, com ampla distribuição geográfica no Brasil (Figura 1), sendo de ocorrência natural desde o Ceará até o Rio Grande do Sul, principalmente nos biomas Caatinga, Cerrado e Mata Atlântica (Carvalho, 2002). Com crescimento moderado, sua madeira possui valor comercial pelas propriedades físicas e mecânicas (Mantovani et al., 2001), atingindo altura comercial de fuste (até a inserção da copa viva) equivalente a outras espécies nativas, com uma média de aproveitamento de 2 toras/fuste, indicando seu potencial para reflorestamento (Roman et al., 2009). Sua madeira é considerada nobre, sendo indicada para a produção de laminados e móveis requintados (Grings; Brack, 2011). Como possui madeira nobre, a espécie tem sido empregada em sistemas de produção integrados, cuja prática vem ganhando espaço no País (Antonelli et al., 2015). Além disso, as árvores apresentam valor ornamental e paisagístico, podendo ser utilizadas na arborização urbana. Outra aptidão da espécie é para a recuperação de áreas degradadas (Grings; Brack, 2011), estando presente na lista de espécies recomendadas para recuperação de ecossistemas florestais degradados, segundo as regiões Bioclimáticas do Paraná (IAT, 2020)

    Possible Odd-Frequency Superconductivity in Strong-Coupling Electron-Phonon Systems

    A possibility of the odd-frequency pairing in the strong-coupling electron-phonon systems is discussed. Using the Holstein-Hubbard model, we demonstrate that the anomalously soft Einstein mode with the frequency ωEωc\omega_{\rm E}\ll\omega_{c} (ωc\omega_{c} is the order of the renormalized bandwidth) mediates the s-wave odd-frequency triplet pairing against the ordinary even-frequency singlet pairing. It is necessary for the emergence of the odd-frequency pairing that the pairing interaction is strongly retarded as well as the strong coupling, since the pairing interaction for the odd-frequency pairing is effective only in the diagonal scattering channel, (ωn,ωn)(ωn,ωn)(\omega_{n},-\omega_{n})\to(\omega_{n'},-\omega_{n'}) with ωn=ωnωE\omega_{n'}=\omega_{n}\gtrsim \omega_{\rm E}. Namely, the odd-frequency superconductivity is realized in the opposite limit of the original BCS theory. The Ginzburg-Landau analysis in the strong-coupling region shows that the specific-heat discontinuity and the slope of the temperature dependence of the superfluid density can be quite small as compared with the BCS values, depending on the ratio of the transition temperature TcT_{c} and ωc\omega_{c}.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, submitted to J.     Yukawa potentials are often used as effective potentials for systems as colloids, plasmas, etc. When the Debye screening length is large, the Yukawa potential tends to the non-screened Coulomb potential ; in this small screening limit, or Coulomb limit, the potential is long ranged. As it is well known in computer simulation, a simple truncation of the long ranged potential and the minimum image convention are insufficient to obtain accurate numerical data on systems. The Ewald method for bulk systems, i.e. with periodic boundary conditions in all three directions of the space, has already been derived for Yukawa potential [cf. Y., Rosenfeld, {\it Mol. Phys.}, \bm{88}, 1357, (1996) and G., Salin and J.-M., Caillol, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, \bm{113}, 10459, (2000)], but for systems with partial periodic boundary conditions, the Ewald sums have only recently been obtained [M., Mazars, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, {\bf 126}, 056101 (2007)]. In this paper, we provide a closed derivation of the Ewald sums for Yukawa potentials in systems with periodic boundary conditions in only two directions and for any value of the Debye length. A special attention is paid to the Coulomb limit and its relation with the electroneutrality of systems.Comment: 40 pages, 5 figures and 4 table

    Periodicities in the high-mass X-ray binary system RXJ0146.9+6121/LSI+61 235

    The high-mass X-ray binary RX J0146.9+6121, with optical counterpart LS I+61°235 (V831 Cas), is an intriguing system on the outskirts of the open cluster NGC 663. It contains the slowest Be type X-ray pulsar known with a pulse period of around 1400 s and, primarily from the study of variation in the emission line profile of Hα, it is known to have a Be decretion disc with a one-armed density wave period of approximately 1240 d. Here we present the results of an extensive photometric campaign, supplemented with optical spectroscopy, aimed at measuring short time-scale periodicities. We find three significant periodicities in the photometric data at, in order of statistical significance, 0.34, 0.67 and 0.10 d. We give arguments to support the interpretation that the 0.34 and 0.10 d periods could be due to stellar oscillations of the B-type primary star and that the 0.67 d period is the spin period of the Be star with a spin axis inclination of 23+10−8 degrees. We measured a systemic velocity of −37.0 ± 4.3 km s−1 confirming that LS I+61°235 has a high probability of membership in the young cluster NGC 663 from which the system's age can be estimated as 20–25 Myr. From archival RXTE All Sky Monitor (ASM) data we further find ‘super’ X-ray outbursts roughly every 450 d. If these super outbursts are caused by the alignment of the compact star with the one-armed decretion disc enhancement, then the orbital period is approximately 330 d
