Toric Construction of Global F-Theory GUTs
We systematically construct a large number of compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds
which are suitable for F-theory model building. These elliptically fibered
Calabi-Yaus are complete intersections of two hypersurfaces in a six
dimensional ambient space. We first construct three-dimensional base manifolds
that are hypersurfaces in a toric ambient space. We search for divisors which
can support an F-theory GUT. The fourfolds are obtained as elliptic fibrations
over these base manifolds. We find that elementary conditions which are
motivated by F-theory GUTs lead to strong constraints on the geometry, which
significantly reduce the number of suitable models. The complete database of
models is available at http://hep.itp.tuwien.ac.at/f-theory/. We work out
several examples in more detail.Comment: 35 pages, references adde
Does Scientific Progress Consist in Increasing Knowledge or Understanding?
Bird argues that scientific progress consists in increasing knowledge. DellsĂ©n objects that increasing knowledge is neither necessary nor sufficient for scientific progress, and argues that scientific progress rather consists in increasing understanding. DellsĂ©n also contends that unlike Birdâs view, his view can account for the scientific practices of using idealizations and of choosing simple theories over complex ones. I argue that DellsĂ©nâs criticisms against Birdâs view fail, and that increasing understanding cannot account for scientific progress, if acceptance, as opposed to belief, is required for scientific understanding
On The Stability Of Non-Supersymmetric AdS Vacua
We consider two infinite families of Non-Supersymmetric vacua, called
Type 2) and Type 3) vacua, that arise in massive IIA supergravity with flux. We
show that both families are perturbatively stable. We then examine
non-perturbative decays of these vacua to other supersymmetric and
non-supersymmetric vacua mediated by instantons in the thin wall
approximation. We find that many decays are ruled out since the tension of the
interpolating domain wall is too big compared to the energy difference in AdS
units. In fact, within our approximations no decays of Type 2) vacua are
allowed, although some decays are only marginally forbidden. This can be
understood in terms of a "pairing symmetry" in the landscape which relate Type
2) vacua with supersymmetric ones of the same energy.Comment: 50 pages, Minor changes in section 2.2.
BPS black holes, the Hesse potential, and the topological string
The Hesse potential is constructed for a class of four-dimensional N=2
supersymmetric effective actions with S- and T-duality by performing the
relevant Legendre transform by iteration. It is a function of fields that
transform under duality according to an arithmetic subgroup of the classical
dualities reflecting the monodromies of the underlying string compactification.
These transformations are not subject to corrections, unlike the
transformations of the fields that appear in the effective action which are
affected by the presence of higher-derivative couplings. The class of actions
that are considered includes those of the FHSV and the STU model. We also
consider heterotic N=4 supersymmetric compactifications. The Hesse potential,
which is equal to the free energy function for BPS black holes, is manifestly
duality invariant. Generically it can be expanded in terms of powers of the
modulus that represents the inverse topological string coupling constant,
, and its complex conjugate. The terms depending holomorphically on
are expected to correspond to the topological string partition function and
this expectation is explicitly verified in two cases. Terms proportional to
mixed powers of and are in principle present.Comment: 28 pages, LaTeX, added comment
Analysis of dendritic cells in tumor-free and tumor-containing sentinel lymph nodes from patients with breast cancer
INTRODUCTION: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy allows identification of the first lymph node into which a primary tumor drains. In breast cancer, identification of tumor cells in the SLNs is a predictor of the tumor's metastatic potential. In the present article, we tested the hypotheses that a positive immune response can occur in tumor-free SLNs and that the activation state of dendritic cells (DCs), the major antigen presenting cells within SLNs, predicts the immune status and metastatic potential of the tumor. METHODS: Fifty paraffin-embedded SLN sections, 25 tumor-free and 25 tumor-containing, from patients with breast cancer were analyzed by immunohistochemistry to determine the immune maturation state of their DCs. In addition, 12 lymph nodes from noncancer-containing breasts were analyzed. Tissues were stained with antibodies against CD3, MHC class II, CD1a, CD83, IL-10, and IL-12. Mature DCs were defined by CD83 expression and immature DCs by CD1a expression. RESULTS: We found a trend toward higher numbers of mature CD83-positive DCs in tumor-free SLNs than in tumor-containing SLNs (P = 0.07). In addition, tumor-free SLNs were more likely to contain cells expressing IL-10 (P = 0.02) and, to a lesser extent, IL-12 (P = 0.12). In contrast, when all SLNs, both tumor-free and tumor-containing, were compared with uninvolved lymph nodes, the numbers of mature and immature DCs were similar. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest tumor-free SLNs are immunologically competent and potentially a site of tumor-specific T-cell activation, as evidenced by the presence of greater numbers of mature DCs and cytokine-producing cells in tumor-free SLNs
Holocene evolution of a barrier island system, Ria Formosa, South Portugal
Holocene evolution of the Ria Formosa barrier island system was studied through the examination of a large subsurface dataset acquired from 191 boreholes and five seismic refraction profiles. Two boreholes with total depths of 26 and 16.5 m were selected for a multi-proxy detailed laboratory analysis, including mean grain size distribution, organic matter (OM) content, color variation, shell identification, and benthic foraminifera assemblages. Selected cores are thought to be representative of the identified depositional sub-basins. Subsurface age data from 16 AMS C-14 dated samples were plotted against depth and resulted in a coherent age model of sedimentary infill. The system evolution was largely controlled by sediment availability, accommodation space, and Holocene sea level rise, first at a rapid rate of 7 mm/yr from 10 kcal yr BP to 7.25 kcal yr BP, followed by a slowdown to 1.1 mm/yr until present. A conceptual model for the origin and Holocene evolution of the Ria Formosa barrier island system implies three main steps, leading to the present system geomorphology: (1) marine flooding of incised palaeovalleys by the rapid transgression of palaeovalleys in the early Holocene(2) development of a proto-barrier island chain perched on Pleistocene detritic headlands and steeper interfluve areas during the early to middle Holoceneand (3) full development of the barrier islands chain and enclosing of the coastal lagoon, followed by the maturation of the system with subsequent siltation and salt marsh expansion from the middle Holocene until present. The onset of barrier system formation dates back to ca. 8 kcal yr BP, predating previously proposed age.SIHER project [PTDC/CTE-GIX112236/2009]EU Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Marine and Coastal Management (MACOMA) fellowship grant, under University of AlgarveEU Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Marine and Coastal Management (MACOMA) fellowship grant, under University of Cadi
Scalar geometry and masses in Calabi-Yau string models
We study the geometry of the scalar manifolds emerging in the no-scale sector
of Kahler moduli and matter fields in generic Calabi-Yau string
compactifications, and describe its implications on scalar masses. We consider
both heterotic and orientifold models and compare their characteristics. We
start from a general formula for the Kahler potential as a function of the
topological compactification data and study the structure of the curvature
tensor. We then determine the conditions for the space to be symmetric and show
that whenever this is the case the heterotic and the orientifold models give
the same scalar manifold. We finally study the structure of scalar masses in
this type of geometries, assuming that a generic superpotential triggers
spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. We show in particular that their behavior
crucially depends on the parameters controlling the departure of the geometry
from the coset situation. We first investigate the average sGoldstino mass in
the hidden sector and its sign, and study the implications on vacuum
metastability and the mass of the lightest scalar. We next examine the soft
scalar masses in the visible sector and their flavor structure, and study the
possibility of realizing a mild form of sequestering relying on a global
symmetry.Comment: 36 pages, no figure
Evidence for F(uzz) Theory
We show that in the decoupling limit of an F-theory compactification, the
internal directions of the seven-branes must wrap a non-commutative four-cycle
S. We introduce a general method for obtaining fuzzy geometric spaces via toric
geometry, and develop tools for engineering four-dimensional GUT models from
this non-commutative setup. We obtain the chiral matter content and Yukawa
couplings, and show that the theory has a finite Kaluza-Klein spectrum. The
value of 1/alpha_(GUT) is predicted to be equal to the number of fuzzy points
on the internal four-cycle S. This relation puts a non-trivial restriction on
the space of gauge theories that can arise as a limit of F-theory. By viewing
the seven-brane as tiled by D3-branes sitting at the N fuzzy points of the
geometry, we argue that this theory admits a holographic dual description in
the large N limit. We also entertain the possibility of constructing string
models with large fuzzy extra dimensions, but with a high scale for quantum
gravity.Comment: v2: 66 pages, 3 figures, references and clarifications adde
Yukawa couplings and masses of non-chiral states for the Standard Model on D6-branes on T6/Z6'
The perturbative leading order open string three-point couplings for the
Standard Model with hidden USp(6) on fractional D6-branes on T6/Z6' from
arXiv:0806.3039 [hep-th], arXiv:0910.0843 [hep-th] are computed. Physical
Yukawa couplings consisting of holomorphic Wilsonian superpotential terms times
a non-holomorphic prefactor involving the corresponding classical open string
Kaehler metrics are given, and mass terms for all non-chiral matter states are
derived. The lepton Yukawa interactions are at leading order flavour diagonal,
while the quark sector displays a more intricate pattern of mixings. While N=2
supersymmetric sectors acquire masses via only two D6-brane displacements -
which also provide the hierarchies between up- and down-type Yukawas within one
quark or lepton generation -, the remaining vector-like states receive masses
via perturbative three-point couplings to some Standard Model singlet fields
with vevs along flat directions. Couplings to the hidden sector and messengers
for supersymmetry breaking are briefly discussed.Comment: 52 pages (including 8p. appendix); 5 figures; 14 tables; v2:

Stringy instanton corrections to N=2 gauge couplings
We discuss a string model where a conformal four-dimensional N=2 gauge theory
receives corrections to its gauge kinetic functions from "stringy" instantons.
These contributions are explicitly evaluated by exploiting the localization
properties of the integral over the stringy instanton moduli space. The model
we consider corresponds to a setup with D7/D3-branes in type I' theory
compactified on T4/Z2 x T2, and possesses a perturbatively computable heterotic
dual. In the heteoric side the corrections to the quadratic gauge couplings are
provided by a 1-loop threshold computation and, under the duality map, match
precisely the first few stringy instanton effects in the type I' setup. This
agreement represents a very non-trivial test of our approach to the exotic
instanton calculus.Comment: 63 pages, 5 figures. V2: final version with minor corrections
