Anisotropic random resistor networks: a model for piezoresistive response of thick-film resistors
A number of evidences suggests that thick-film resistors are close to a
metal-insulator transition and that tunneling processes between metallic grains
are the main source of resistance. We consider as a minimal model for
description of transport properties in thick-film resistors a percolative
resistor network, with conducting elements governed by tunneling. For both
oriented and randomly oriented networks, we show that the piezoresistive
response to an applied strain is model dependent when the system is far away
from the percolation thresold, while in the critical region it acquires
universal properties. In particular close to the metal-insulator transition,
the piezoresistive anisotropy show a power law behavior. Within this region,
there exists a simple and universal relation between the conductance and the
piezoresistive anisotropy, which could be experimentally tested by common
cantilever bar measurements of thick-film resistors.Comment: 7 pages, 2 eps figure
Longitudinal and transversal piezoresistive response of granular metals
In this paper, we study the piezoresistive response and its anisotropy for a
bond percolation model of granular metals. Both effective medium results and
numerical Monte Carlo calculations of finite simple cubic networks show that
the piezoresistive anisotropy is a strongly dependent function of bond
probability p and of bond conductance distribution width \Delta g. We find that
piezoresistive anisotropy is strongly suppressed as p is reduced and/or \Delta
g is enhanced and that it vanishes at the percolation thresold p=p_c. We argue
that a measurement of the piezoresistive anisotropy could be a sensitive tool
to estimate critical metallic concentrations in real granular metals.Comment: 14 pages, 7 eps figure
Breaking the silence of the 500-year-old smiling garden of everlasting flowers: The En Tibi book herbarium
We reveal the enigmatic origin of one of the earliest surviving botanical collections. The 16th-century Italian En Tibi herbarium is a large, luxurious book with c. 500 dried plants, made in the Renaissance scholarly circles that developed botany as a distinct discipline. Its Latin inscription, translated as “Here for you a smiling garden of everlasting flowers”, suggests that this herbarium was a gift for a patron of the emerging botanical science. We follow an integrative approach that includes a botanical similarity estimation of the En Tibi with contemporary herbaria (Aldrovandi, Cesalpino, “Cibo”, Merini, Estense) and analysis of the book’s watermark, paper, binding, handwriting, Latin inscription and the morphology and DNA of hairs mounted under specimens. Rejecting the previous origin hypothesis (Ferrara, 1542–1544), we show that the En Tibi was made in Bologna around 1558. We attribute the En Tibi herbarium to Francesco Petrollini, a neglected 16th-century botanist, to whom also belongs, as clarified herein, the controversial “Erbario Cibo” kept in Rome. The En Tibi was probably a work on commission for Petrollini, who provided the plant material for the book. Other people were apparently involved in the compilation and offering of this precious gift to a yet unknown person, possibly the Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand I. The En Tibi herbarium is a Renaissance masterpiece of art and science, representing the quest for truth in herbal medicine and botany. Our multidisciplinary approach can serve as a guideline for deciphering other anonymous herbaria, kept safely “hidden” in treasure rooms of universities, libraries and museums
Optical and Energetic Investigation of an Advanced Corona Ignition System in a Pressure-Based Calorimeter
In recent years, radio-frequency corona igniters have been extensively studied for their capability to ensure an effective ignition also in lean or diluted mixtures. Corona ignition is volumetric, with streamers coming from a star-shaped electrode. During the discharge, many radicals and excited species, able to speed up the combustion onset, are generated. At the same time, corona igniters are able to release a considerable amount of thermal energy inside the combustion chamber. The correct determination of such energy is crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of the ignition. In this work, corona discharge is experimentally evaluated inside an optical vessel. In this apparatus, the released thermal energy is measured by means of pressure-based calorimetry, and at the same time the natural luminosity of the streamers is recorded with a high-speed camera. The goal is to find a relationship between thermal energy release and streamers luminosity. Tests are performed using nitrogen as medium, at different pressure levels inside the vessel. The peak electrode voltage is varied to characterize the igniter behaviour in different operating conditions. The results of this work can be used to quantify the corona ignition capabilities to involve a wide amount of medium while releasing a high amount of thermal energy. A repeatability evaluation of streamer evolution is investigated as well
A study on the Abruzzo 6 April 2009 earthquake by applying the RST approach to 15 years of AVHRR TIR observations
A self adaptive approach (RST, Robust Satellite Technique) has been proposed as a suitable tool for satellite TIR surveys in seismically active regions devoted to detect and monitor thermal anomalies possibly related to earthquake occurrence. In this work, RST approach has been applied to 15 years of AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) thermal infrared observations in order to study the 6 April 2009 Abruzzo earthquake. Preliminary results show clear differences in TIR anomalies occurrence during the periods used for validation (15 March–15 April 2009) and the one (15 March–15 April 2008) without earthquakes with <i>M</i><sub>L</sub>&ge;4.5, used for confutation purposes. Quite clear TIR anomalies appears also to mark main tectonic lineaments during the preparatory phases of others, low magnitude(3.9<<i>M</i><sub>L</sub><4.6) earthquakes, occurred in the area in the same period
Comparative physicochemical analysis among 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether cross-linked hyaluronic acid dermal fillers
(1) Background: Injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are used in several chirurgical practices and in aesthetic medicine. HA filler stability can be enhanced through different cross-linking technologies; one of the most frequently cross-linker used is 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE), also present in the HA-BDDE dermal filler family of the company Matex Lab S.p.A. (Brindisi, Italy). Our overview is focused on their characterization, drawing a correlation between matrix structure, rheological and physicochemical properties related to their cross-linking technologies. (2) Methods: Four different injectable HA hydrogels were characterized through optical microscopic examination and rheological behavior investigation. (3) Results: The cross-linked HA dermal fillers showed a fibrous \u201cspiderweb-like\u201d matrix structure and an elastic and solid-like profile. (4) Conclusions: The comparative analysis represents a preliminary characterization of these injectable medical devices in order to identify their best field of application
Step-by-step regeneration of tentacles after injury in anemonia viridis—morphological and structural cell analyses
Benthic marine invertebrates, such as corals, are often subjected to injury caused by several sources. Here, the differences and characteristics in injured and health tissues in terms of cellular components are shown through a histological investigation of the soft coral Anemonia viridis at 0 h, 6 h, 24 h, and 7 days after injury caused by tentacle amputation. In addition, a new tool was used for the first time in invertebrates, positron emission tomography, in order to investigate the events that occur during regeneration within a longer time period (0 h, 24 h, and 14 days after the tentacles were cut). Higher integrated density values were measured through a densitometric analysis in sections stained with Fontana-Masson at 24 h after the tentacles were cut. This suggests an increase in melanin-like containing cells and a subsequent increase in fibroblast-like cells differentiated by amoebocytes that converge to the lesion site in the early stages of inflammation and regeneration. This work provides, for the first time, an elucidation of the events that occur during wound-healing and regeneration in basal metazoan, focusing on the characterisation of immune cells and their role. Our results indicate that Mediterranean anthozoan proves to be a valuable model for studying regeneration. Many events highlighted in this research occur in different phyla, suggesting that they are highly conserved
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor β activation promotes myonuclear accretion in skeletal muscle of adult and aged mice
We reported recently that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor β (PPARβ) activation promotes a calcineurin-dependent exercise-like remodelling characterised by increased numbers of oxidative fibres and capillaries. As physical exercise also induces myonuclear accretion, we investigated whether PPARβ activation alters myonuclear density. Transgenic muscle-specific PPARβ over-expression induced 14% increase of myonuclear density. Pharmacological PPARβ activation promoted rapid and massive myonuclear accretion (20% increase after 48 h), which is dependent upon calcineurin/nuclear factor of activated T cells signalling pathway. In vivo bromodeoxyuridine labelling and proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunodetection revealed that PPARβ activation did not promote cell proliferation, suggesting that the PPARβ-promoted myonuclear accretion involves fusion of pre-existing muscle precursor cells to myofibres rather than cell division. Finally, we showed that in skeletal muscle, ageing led to a down-regulation of PPARβ accompanied by decrease of both oxidative fibre number and myonuclear density.
