    The C-metric as a colliding plane wave space-time

    It is explicitly shown that part of the C-metric space-time inside the black hole horizon may be interpreted as the interaction region of two colliding plane waves with aligned linear polarization, provided the rotational coordinate is replaced by a linear one. This is a one-parameter generalization of the degenerate Ferrari-Ibanez solution in which the focussing singularity is a Cauchy horizon rather than a curvature singularity.Comment: 6 pages.     Radiation generated by accelerating and rotating charged black holes in (anti-)de Sitter space

    Asymptotic behaviour of gravitational and electromagnetic fields of exact type D solutions from the large Plebanski-Demianski family of black hole spacetimes is analyzed. The amplitude and directional structure of radiation is evaluated in cases when the cosmological constant is non-vanishing, so that the conformal infinities have either de Sitter-like or anti-de Sitter-like character. In particular, explicit relations between the parameters that characterize the sources (that is their mass, electric and magnetic charges, NUT parameter, rotational parameter, and acceleration) and properties of the radiation generated by them are presented. The results further elucidate the physical interpretation of these solutions and may help to understand radiative characteristics of more general spacetimes than those that are asymptotically flat.Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures.     The star-forming environment of a ULX in NGC 4559: an optical study

    We have studied the candidate optical counterparts and the stellar population in the star-forming complex around a bright ULX in NGC4559, using HST/WFPC2, XMM-Newton/OM, and ground-based data. We find that the ULX is located near a small group of OB stars. The brightest point source in the Chandra error circle is consistent with a single blue supergiant of mass ~ 20 M_sun and age ~ 10 Myr. A few other stars are resolved inside the error circle: mostly blue and red supergiants with masses ~ 10-15 M_sun and ages ~ 20 Myr. This is consistent with the interpretation of this ULX as a black hole (BH) accreting from a high-mass donor star in its supergiant phase, via Roche-lobe overflow. The observed optical colors and the blue-to-red supergiant ratio suggest a low metal abundance: 0.2 <~ Z/Z_sun <~ 0.4 (Padua tracks), or 0.05 <~ Z/Z_sun <~ 0.2 (Geneva tracks). The age of the star-forming complex is <~ 30 Myr. H-alpha images show that this region has a ring-like appearance. We propose that it is an expanding wave of star formation, triggered by an initial density perturbation, in a region where the gas was only marginally stable to gravitational collapse. A possible trigger was the collision with a satellite dwarf galaxy, visible a few arcsec north-west of the complex, going through the gas-rich outer disk of NGC4559. The X-ray data favour a BH more massive (M > 50 M_sun) than typical Milky Way BH candidates. The optical data favour a ``young'' BH originating in the recent episode of massive star formation; however, they also rule out an association with young massive star clusters. We speculate that other mechanisms may lead to the formation of relatively massive BHs (~ 50-100 M_sun) from stellar evolution processes in low-metallicity environments, or when star formation is triggered by galactic collisions.Comment: MNRAS accepted, 19 pages.     Two qubit copying machine for economical quantum eavesdropping

    We study the mapping which occurs when a single qubit in an arbitrary state interacts with another qubit in a given, fixed state resulting in some unitary transformation on the two qubit system which, in effect, makes two copies of the first qubit. The general problem of the quality of the resulting copies is discussed using a special representation, a generalization of the usual Schmidt decomposition, of an arbitrary two-dimensional subspace of a tensor product of two 2-dimensional Hilbert spaces. We exhibit quantum circuits which can reproduce the results of any two qubit copying machine of this type. A simple stochastic generalization (using a ``classical'' random signal) of the copying machine is also considered. These copying machines provide simple embodiments of previously proposed optimal eavesdropping schemes for the BB84 and B92 quantum cryptography protocols.Comment: Minor changes. 26 pages RevTex including 7 PS figure

    Background: The rapid expansion of online video gaming as a leisure time activity has led to the appearance of problematic online gaming (POG). According to the literature, POG is associated with different psychiatric symptoms (eg, depression, anxiety) and with specific gaming motives (ie, escape, achievement). Based on studies of alcohol use that suggest a mediator role of drinking motives between distal influences (eg, trauma symptoms) and drinking problems, this study examined the assumption that there is an indirect link between psychiatric distress and POG via the mediation of gaming motives. Furthermore, it was also assumed that there was a moderator effect of gender and game type preference based on the important role gender plays in POG and the structural differences between different game types

    The Top Ten List of Gravitational Lens Candidates from the HST Medium Deep Survey

    A total of 10 good candidates for gravitational lensing have been discovered in the WFPC2 images from the HST Medium Deep Survey (MDS) and archival primary observations. These candidate lenses are unique HST discoveries, i.e. they are faint systems with sub-arcsecond separations between the lensing objects and the lensed source images. Most of them are difficult objects for ground-based spectroscopic confirmation or for measurement of the lens and source redshifts. Seven are ``strong lens'' candidates which appear to have multiple images of the source. Three are cases where the single image of the source galaxy has been significantly distorted into an arc. The first two quadruply lensed candidates were reported in Ratnatunga et al 1995 (ApJL, 453, L5) We report on the subsequent eight candidates and describe them with simple models based on the assumption of singular isothermal potentials. Residuals from the simple models for some of the candidates indicate that a more complex model for the potential will probably be required to explain the full structural detail of the observations once they are confirmed to be lenses.     A recent issue of Practice: Social Work in Action featured a paper by Rogers that examined whether the issue of problem gambling was a suitable case for social work. Rogers’ overview was (in various places) out of date, highly selective, contradictory, presented unsupported claims and somewhat misleading. Rogers’ paper is to be commended for putting the issue of problem gambling on the social work agenda. However, social workers need up-to-date information and contextually situated information if they are to make informed decisions in helping problem gamblers

    Surface spin-flop phases and bulk discommensurations in antiferromagnets

    Phase diagrams as a function of anisotropy D and magnetic field H are obtained for discommensurations and surface states for a model antiferromagnet in which HH is parallel to the easy axis. The surface spin-flop phase exists for all DD. We show that there is a region where the penetration length of the surface spin-flop phase diverges. Introducing a discommensuration of even length then becomes preferable to reconstructing the surface. The results are used to clarify and correct previous studies in which discommensurations have been confused with genuine surface spin-flop states.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 2 Postscript figure

    Properties of galaxy dark matter halos from weak lensing

    We present the results of a study of weak lensing by galaxies based on 45.5 deg2^2 of RCR_C band imaging data from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (RCS). We present the first weak lensing detection of the flattening of galaxy dark matter halos. We use a simple model in which the ellipticity of the halo is ff times the observed ellipticity of the lens. We find a best fit value of f=0.770.21+0.18f=0.77^{+0.18}_{-0.21}, suggesting that the dark matter halos are somewhat rounder than the light distribution. The fact that we detect a significant flattening implies that the halos are well aligned with the light distribution. Given the average ellipticity of the lenses, this implies a halo ellipticity of =0.330.09+0.07=0.33^{+0.07}_{-0.09}, in fair agreement with results from numerical simulations of CDM. This result provides strong support for the existence of dark matter, as an isotropic lensing signal is excluded with 99.5% confidence. We also study the average mass profile around the lenses, using a maximum likelihood analysis. We consider two models for the halo mass profile: a truncated isothermal sphere (TIS) and an NFW profile. We adopt observationally motivated scaling relations between the lens luminosity and the velocity dispersion and the extent of the halo. The best fit NFW model yields a mass M200=(8.4±0.7±0.4)×1011h1MM_{200}=(8.4\pm0.7\pm0.4)\times 10^{11} h^{-1} M_\odot and a scale radius rs=16.22.9+3.6h1r_s=16.2^{+3.6}_{-2.9} h^{-1} kpc. This value for the scale radius is in excellent agreement with predictions from numerical simulations for a halo of this mass.Comment: Significantly revised version, accepted for publication in ApJ 11 pages, 6 figure
