The design of efficient air pollution control strategies
This statement addresses gains in economic efficiency which could
be obtained by removing barriers to advances in the technology and
procedures commonly used for designing air pollution abatement strategies
Use of the booklet category test to assess abstract concept formation in schizophrenic disorders
The relationship of concept formation abilities to the presence or absence of delusions in schizophrenic disorders was investigated. Twenty-six schizophrenic patients and 14 normal individuals were administered a short form of the Booklet Category Test (BCT). Patients were grouped into those with and without delusions. It was hypothesized that the delusional group would perform significantly better on the BCT (obtain lower error scores) than the nondelusional group. Normal and delusional groups obtained significantly lower BCT error scores than the nondelusional group, even when differences in IQ scores were statistically partialled out. The two schizophrenic groups also differed significantly on BCT error scores with the delusional group performing better than the nondelusional group
A four-channel portable solar radiometer for measuring particulate and/or aerosol opacity and concentration of NO2 and SO2 in stack plumes
Solar absorption radiometry has been investigated as a method of measuring stackplume effluents. A simple and inexpensive instrument was constructed for observing the sun at four wavelengths: 800, 600, 400, and 310 nm. Higher wavelength channels measured the effect of the particulates and NO2, and an ultraviolet channel measured the contribution of SO2 to the attenuation. Stack-plume measurements of opacity and concentration of NO2 and SO2 were in basic agreement with in-stack measurements. The major limitation on the use of the radiometer is the requirement for an accessible viewing position which allows the sun-plume-observer relationship to be attained. It was concluded that the solar radiometer offers an inexpensive method for monitoring plume effluents when the viewing position is not restricted
A new measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum between 3 x 10 to the 15th power eV and 3 x 10 to the 16th power eV
A new Cerenkov photon density spectrum measurement is reported. The derivation of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum for energies from 3x10 to the 15th power eV to 3x10 to the 16th power eV are presented
Instability of a membrane intersecting a black hole
The stability of a Nambu-Goto membrane at the equatorial plane of the
Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m-de Sitter spacetime is studied. The covariant
perturbation formalism is applied to study the behavior of the perturbation of
the membrane. The perturbation equation is solved numerically. It is shown that
a membrane intersecting a charged black hole, including extremely charged one,
is unstable and that the positive cosmological constant strengthens the
instability.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physical Review
