Low-speed longitudinal and lateral-directional aerodynamic characteristics of the X-31 configuration
An experimental investigation of a 19 pct. scale model of the X-31 configuration was completed in the Langley 14 x 22 Foot Subsonic Tunnel. This study was performed to determine the static low speed aerodynamic characteristics of the basic configuration over a large range of angle of attack and sideslip and to study the effects of strakes, leading-edge extensions (wing-body strakes), nose booms, speed-brake deployment, and inlet configurations. The ultimate purpose was to optimize the configuration for high angle of attack and maneuvering-flight conditions. The model was tested at angles of attack from -5 to 67 deg and at sideslip angles from -16 to 16 deg for speeds up to 190 knots (dynamic pressure of 120 psf)
GABAergic compensation in connexin36 knock-out mice evident during low-magnesium seizure-like event activity
Gap junctions within the cerebral cortex may facilitate cortical seizure formation by their ability to synchronize electrical activity. To investigate this, one option is to compare wild-type (WT) animals with those lacking the gene for connexin36 (Cx36 KO); the protein that forms neuronal gap junctions between cortical inhibitory cells. However, genetically modified knock-out animals may exhibit compensatory effects; with the risk that observed differences between WT and Cx36 KO animals could be erroneously attributed to Cx36 gap junction effects. In this study we investigated the effect of GABAA-receptor modulation (augmentation with 16 Ī¼M etomidate and blockade with 100 Ī¼M picrotoxin) on low-magnesium seizure-like events (SLEs) in mouse cortical slices. In WT slices, picrotoxin enhanced both the amplitude (49% increase, p = 0.0006) and frequency (37% increase, p = 0.005) of SLEs; etomidate also enhanced SLE amplitude (18% increase, p = 0.003) but reduced event frequency (25% decrease, p < 0.0001). In Cx36 KO slices, the frequency effects of etomidate and picrotoxin were preserved, but the amplitude responses were abolished. Pre-treatment with the gap junction blocker mefloquin in WT slices did not significantly alter the drug responses, indicating that the reduction in amplitude seen in the Cx36 KO mice was not primarily mediated by their lack of interneuronal gap junctions, but was rather due to pre-existing compensatory changes in these animals. Conclusions from studies comparing seizure characteristics between WT and Cx36 KO mice must be viewed with a degree of caution because of the possible confounding effect of compensatory neurophysiological changes in the genetically modified animals
Constructing A Flexible Likelihood Function For Spectroscopic Inference
We present a modular, extensible likelihood framework for spectroscopic
inference based on synthetic model spectra. The subtraction of an imperfect
model from a continuously sampled spectrum introduces covariance between
adjacent datapoints (pixels) into the residual spectrum. For the high
signal-to-noise data with large spectral range that is commonly employed in
stellar astrophysics, that covariant structure can lead to dramatically
underestimated parameter uncertainties (and, in some cases, biases). We
construct a likelihood function that accounts for the structure of the
covariance matrix, utilizing the machinery of Gaussian process kernels. This
framework specifically address the common problem of mismatches in model
spectral line strengths (with respect to data) due to intrinsic model
imperfections (e.g., in the atomic/molecular databases or opacity
prescriptions) by developing a novel local covariance kernel formalism that
identifies and self-consistently downweights pathological spectral line
"outliers." By fitting many spectra in a hierarchical manner, these local
kernels provide a mechanism to learn about and build data-driven corrections to
synthetic spectral libraries. An open-source software implementation of this
approach is available at http://iancze.github.io/Starfish, including a
sophisticated probabilistic scheme for spectral interpolation when using model
libraries that are sparsely sampled in the stellar parameters. We demonstrate
some salient features of the framework by fitting the high resolution -band
spectrum of WASP-14, an F5 dwarf with a transiting exoplanet, and the moderate
resolution -band spectrum of Gliese 51, an M5 field dwarf.Comment: Accepted to ApJ. Incorporated referees' comments. New figures 1, 8,

Older adults' evaluations of the standard and modified pedometer-based Green Prescription
INTRODUCTION: The Green Prescription is a primary care programme designed to increase physical activity in individuals with low activity levels. Older adults tend to engage in insufficient physical activity to obtain health-related gain.
AIM: To examine participantsā ratings of the Healthy Steps intervention and to assess how participants rated the use of a pedometer-based Green Prescription in aiding their physical activity.
METHODS: In total, 330 community-dwelling older adults who have low levels of activity were randomised to receive either a standard time-based Green Prescription or a modified pedometer-based Green Prescription. Post-intervention, 259 participants completed the participant evaluation questionnaire via postal survey. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Chi-squared analyses.
RESULTS: The standard components of the Green Prescription (general practitioner consultations and telephone counselling) received similar and higher ratings across both allocation groups than the use of print materials. A pedometer-based Green Prescription was rated as being helpful in aiding physical activity.
DISCUSSION: This study supports the importance of general practitionersā initial role in prescribing physical activity for older adults and of ongoing telephone support for longer-term adherence. Incorporating a pedometer can be effective in helping low-active older adults initiate and maintain regular physical activity
Self-Consistent Field Theory of Multiply-Branched Block Copolymer Melts
We present a numerical algorithm to evaluate the self-consistent field theory
for melts composed of block copolymers with multiply-branched architecture. We
present results for the case of branched copolymers with doubly-functional
groups for multiple branching generations. We discuss the stability of the
cubic phase of spherical micelles, the A15 phase, as a consequence of tendency
of the AB interfaces to conform to the polyhedral environment of the Voronoi
cell of the micelle lattice.Comment: 12 pages, 10 includes figure
