Neutral Plasma Oscillations at Zero Temperature
We use cold plasma theory to calculate the response of an ultracold neutral
plasma to an applied rf field. The free oscillation of the system has a
continuous spectrum and an associated damped quasimode. We show that this
quasimode dominates the driven response. We use this model to simulate plasma
oscillations in an expanding ultracold neutral plasma, providing insights into
the assumptions used to interpret experimental data [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 318

Towards a Stringy Resolution of the Cosmological Singularity
We study cosmological solutions to the low-energy effective action of
heterotic string theory including possible leading order corrections
and a potential for the dilaton. We consider the possibility that including
such stringy corrections can resolve the initial cosmological singularity.
Since the exact form of these corrections is not known the higher-derivative
terms are constructed so that they vanish when the metric is de Sitter
spacetime. The constructed terms are compatible with known restrictions from
scattering amplitude and string worldsheet beta-function calculations. Analytic
and numerical techniques are used to construct a singularity-free cosmological
solution. At late times and low-curvatures the metric is asymptotically
Minkowski and the dilaton is frozen. In the high-curvature regime the universe

Effects of sea level rise on economy of the United States
We report the first ex post study of the economic impact of sea level rise. We apply two econometric approaches to estimate the past effects of sea level rise on the economy of the USA, viz. Barro type growth regressions adjusted for spatial patterns and a matching estimator. Unit of analysis is 3063 counties of the USA. We fit growth regressions for 13 time periods and we estimated numerous varieties and robustness tests for both growth regressions and matching estimator. Although there is some evidence that sea level rise has a positive effect on economic growth, in most specifications the estimated effects are insignificant. We therefore conclude that there is no stable, significant effect of sea level rise on economic growth. This finding contradicts previous ex ante studies
Spinflation from Geometric Tachyon
We study the assisted inflation scenario from the rolling of BPS D3-brane
into the NS5-branes, on a transverse geometry of , coupled to
four dimensional gravity. We assume that the branes are distributed along
and the probe D3-branes spin along plane. Qualitatively this process is
similar to that of N-tachyon assisted inflation on unstable D-branes. We

Dynamic input demand functions and resource adjustment for US agriculture: state evidence
The paper presents an econometric model of dynamic agricultural input demand functions that include research based technical change and autoregressive disturbances and fits the model to annual data for a set of state aggregates pooled over 1950–1982. The methodological approach is one of developing a theoretical foundation for a dynamic input demand system and accepting state aggreage behavior as approximated by nonlinear adjustment costs and long-term profit maximization. Although other studies have largely ignored autocorrelation in dynamic input demand systems, the results show shorter adjustment lags with autocorrelation than without. Dynamic input demand own-price elasticities for the six input groups are inelastic, and the demand functions possess significant cross-price and research effects
Deforming, revolving and resolving - New paths in the string theory landscape
In this paper we investigate the properties of series of vacua in the string
theory landscape. In particular, we study minima to the flux potential in type
IIB compactifications on the mirror quintic. Using geometric transitions, we
embed its one dimensional complex structure moduli space in that of another
Calabi-Yau with h^{1,1}=86 and h^{2,1}=2. We then show how to construct
infinite series of continuously connected minima to the mirror quintic
potential by moving into this larger moduli space, applying its monodromies,
and moving back. We provide an example of such series, and discuss their

An approximate renormalization-group transformation for Hamiltonian systems with three degrees of freedom
We construct an approximate renormalization transformation that combines
Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM)and renormalization-group techniques, to analyze
instabilities in Hamiltonian systems with three degrees of freedom. This scheme
is implemented both for isoenergetically nondegenerate and for degenerate
Hamiltonians. For the spiral mean frequency vector, we find numerically that
the iterations of the transformation on nondegenerate Hamiltonians tend to
degenerate ones on the critical surface. As a consequence, isoenergetically
degenerate and nondegenerate Hamiltonians belong to the same universality
class, and thus the corresponding critical invariant tori have the same type of
scaling properties. We numerically investigate the structure of the attracting
set on the critical surface and find that it is a strange nonchaotic attractor.

C^2/Z_n Fractional branes and Monodromy
We construct geometric representatives for the C^2/Z_n fractional branes in
terms of branes wrapping certain exceptional cycles of the resolution. In the
process we use large radius and conifold-type monodromies, and also check some
of the orbifold quantum symmetries. We find the explicit Seiberg-duality which
connects our fractional branes to the ones given by the McKay correspondence.

Assisted Inflation from Geometric Tachyon
We study the effect of rolling of N D3-branes in the vicinity of NS5-branes.
We find out that this system coupled with the four dimensional gravity gives
the slow roll assisted inflation of the scalar field theory. Once again this
expectation is exactly similar to that of N-tachyon assisted inflation on
