Variational Principle in the Algebra of Asymptotic Fields
This paper proposes a variational principle for the solutions of quantum
field theories in which the ``trial functions'' are chosen from the algebra of

Scaling limit of a non-relativistic model
I calculate the structure function for scattering from the two-body bound
state in its lowest level in a non-relativistic model of confined scalar
``quarks'' of masses and . The scaling limit in exists and is non-vanishing only for the values
and which correspond to the fractions of
the momentum of the two-body system carried by each of the ``quarks.'' In the
scaling limit, the interference from scattering off of the two ``quarks''

Covariance of Time-Ordered Products Implies Local Commutativity of Fields
We formulate Lorentz covariance of a quantum field theory in terms of
covariance of time-ordered products (or other Green's functions). This
formulation of Lorentz covariance implies spacelike local commutativity or
anticommutativity of fields, sometimes called microscopic causality or

Why is CPT fundamental?
G. L\"uders and W. Pauli proved the theorem based on
Lagrangian quantum field theory almost half a century ago. R. Jost gave a more
general proof based on ``axiomatic'' field theory nearly as long ago. The
axiomatic point of view has two advantages over the Lagrangian one. First, the
axiomatic point of view makes clear why is fundamental--because
it is intimately related to Lorentz invariance. Secondly, the axiomatic proof
gives a simple way to calculate the transform of any
relativistic field without calculating , and
separately and then multiplying them. The purpose of this
pedagogical paper is to ``deaxiomatize'' the theorem by
explaining it in a few simple steps. We use theorems of distribution theory and
of several complex variables without proof to make the exposition elementary.Comment: 17 pages, no figure
Superfield Realizations of Lorentz and CPT Violation
Superfield realizations of Lorentz-violating extensions of the Wess-Zumino
model are presented. These models retain supersymmetry but include terms that
explicitly break the Lorentz symmetry. The models can be understood as arising
from superspace transformations that are modifications of the familiar one in

Glacial cycles promote greater dispersal, which can help explain larger clutch sizes, in north temperate birds
Earth’s glacial history and patterns in the life history traits of the planet’s avifauna suggest the following interpretations of how recent geological history has affected these key characteristics of the biota: 1) Increased colonizing ability has been an important advantage of increased dispersal, and life history strategies are better categorized by dispersive colonizing ability than by their intrinsic growth rates; 2) Birds of the North Temperate Zone show a greater tendency to disperse, and they disperse farther, than tropical or south temperate birds; 3) Habitat changes associated with glacial advance and retreat selected for high dispersal ability, particularly in the North; and 4) Selection for greater dispersal throughout the unstable Pleistocene has also resulted in other well-recognized life history contrasts, especially larger clutch sizes in birds of North Temperate areas
Search for exchange-antisymmetric two-photon states
Atomic two-photon J=0 J'=1 transitions are forbidden for
photons of the same energy. This selection rule is related to the fact that
photons obey Bose-Einstein statistics. We have searched for small violations of
this selection rule by studying transitions in atomic Ba. We set a limit on the
probability that photons are in exchange-antisymmetric states:
