On the treatment of corners in the boundary element method
AbstractA new technique for treating surface discontinuities within boundary element calculations is proposed. Multiple nodes are used to represent the geometry, and the necessary additional equations are obtained by differentiating the usual boundary element integral equation. In deriving expressions for the resulting singular integrals, it is found that constraints must be placed on the functional approximation at the discontinuity. An algorithm for incorporating these constraints is developed and numerical tests for an exactly solvable three-dimensional Laplace equation problem are presented
SECOND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON RANAVIRUSES:: A NORTH AMERICAN HERPETOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
Ranaviruses are large double stranded DNA viruses of poikilothermic vertebrates including amphibians, reptiles and fish. In North America, ranaviral disease and ranavirus-related die-off events have been documented in all three classes. Ranaviruses are found worldwide, appear to be emerging in some regions, and are increasingly recognized as a threat to many species
THIRD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON RANAVIRUSES:: ADVANCING THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE THREAT OF RANAVIRUSES TO NORTH AMERICAN HERPETOFAUNA
Members of the genus Ranavirus, one of five genera withinthe family Iridoviridae, encompass a group of large, doublestrandedDNA viruses that infect all three classes of ectothermicvertebrates: fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Ranaviruses areglobally emerging pathogens that cause considerable morbidityand mortality among diverse populations. In North America, ranavirus epizootics are regularly reported in wild and culturedfish, amphibian, and reptile populations

Kinetically Driven Growth Instability in Stressed Solids
We report a new stress-induced kinetically driven morphological instability for driven systems. The effect of stress on the interfacial mobility couples to stress variations along a perturbed planar growth front. Comparison of theory and experiment for solid phase epitaxy at a corrugated Si(001) interface, with no free parameters, indicates that the new mechanism is required to account for the observed growth of the corrugation amplitude. This mechanism operates in conjunction with known diffusional and elastic strain energy-driven instabilities in determining morphological evolution.Engineering and Applied Science
Forecasting extreme stratospheric polar vortex events
Extreme polar vortex events known as sudden stratospheric warmings can influence surface winter weather conditions, but their timing is difficult to predict. Here, we examine factors that influence their occurrence, with a focus on their timing and vertical extent. We consider the roles of the troposphere and equatorial stratosphere separately, using a split vortex event in January 2009 as the primary case study. This event cannot be reproduced by constraining wind and temperatures in the troposphere alone, even when the equatorial lower stratosphere is in the correct phase of the quasi biennial oscillation. When the flow in the equatorial upper stratosphere is also constrained, the timing and spatial evolution of the vortex event is captured remarkably well. This highlights an influence from this region previously unrecognised by the seasonal forecast community. We suggest that better representation of the flow in this region is likely to improve predictability of extreme polar vortex events and hence their associated impacts at the surface
Sports Under Quarantine: A Case Study of Major League Baseball in 2020
© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. This case study entailed a Twitter content analysis to address the pandemic-delayed start to Major League Baseball (MLB) in the shortened 2020 season. This case study helps address the overarching objective to investigate how the sports world, especially fans, responded to MLB played during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The methods investigated the common themes and determined who used predetermined Twitter hashtags. We recorded how many times external links, photos, emojis, and the 30 MLB teams were mentioned in the 779 tweets obtained during 39 days of data retrieval. Results showed that the most common category of tweeted content concerned news reports. Comparable numbers of positive and negative responses to the start of the MLB season were recognized, with a fraction of tweets highlighting COVID-19 impacts on health and modification of play (e.g., cardboard fans). The majority of Twitter users were from media and layperson categories. More inferred males tweeted using the selected hashtags. In exploratory analyses, results indicated that 50.2% of the sample included a link or a photo, and 2.2% of the sample used an emoji. The three most mentioned teams were the Cardinals (N = 51), Marlins (N = 49), and the Yankees (N = 48). The results confirmed the value of social media analysis as a research approach and revealed patterns emerging during a unique pandemic sports and media era
On the Relation between Solar Activity and Clear-Sky Terrestrial Irradiance
The Mauna Loa Observatory record of direct-beam solar irradiance measurements
for the years 1958-2010 is analysed to investigate the variation of clear-sky
terrestrial insolation with solar activity over more than four solar cycles.
The raw irradiance data exhibit a marked seasonal cycle, extended periods of
lower irradiance due to emissions of volcanic aerosols, and a long-term
decrease in atmospheric transmission independent of solar activity. After
correcting for these effects, it is found that clear-sky terrestrial irradiance
typically varies by about 0.2 +/- 0.1% over the course of the solar cycle, a
change of the same order of magnitude as the variations of the total solar
irradiance above the atmosphere. An investigation of changes in the clear-sky
atmospheric transmission fails to find a significant trend with sunspot number.
Hence there is no evidence for a yet unknown effect amplifying variations of
clear-sky irradiance with solar activity.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, in press at Solar Physics; minor changes to the

Neutron scattering and molecular correlations in a supercooled liquid
We show that the intermediate scattering function for neutron
scattering (ns) can be expanded naturely with respect to a set of molecular
correlation functions that give a complete description of the translational and
orientational two-point correlations in the liquid. The general properties of
this expansion are discussed with special focus on the -dependence and hints
for a (partial) determination of the molecular correlation functions from
neutron scattering results are given. The resulting representation of the
static structure factor is studied in detail for a model system using
data from a molecular dynamics simulation of a supercooled liquid of rigid
diatomic molecules. The comparison between the exact result for and
different approximations that result from a truncation of the series
representation demonstrates its good convergence for the given model system. On
the other hand it shows explicitly that the coupling between translational
(TDOF) and orientational degrees of freedom (ODOF) of each molecule and
rotational motion of different molecules can not be neglected in the
supercooled regime.Further we report the existence of a prepeak in the
ns-static structure factor of the examined fragile glassformer, demonstrating
that prepeaks can occur even in the most simple molecular liquids. Besides
examining the dependence of the prepeak on the scattering length and the
temperature we use the expansion of into molecular correlation
functions to point out intermediate range orientational order as its principle
origin.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
On the complete classification of the unitary N=2 minimal superconformal field theories
Aiming at a complete classification of unitary N=2 minimal models (where the
assumption of space-time supersymmetry has been dropped), it is shown that each
modular invariant candidate of a partition function for such a theory is indeed
the partition function of a minimal model. A family of models constructed via
orbifoldings of either the diagonal model or of the space-time supersymmetric
exceptional models demonstrates that there exists a unitary N=2 minimal model
for every one of the allowed partition functions in the list obtained from
Gannon's work.
Kreuzer and Schellekens' conjecture that all simple current invariants can be
obtained as orbifolds of the diagonal model, even when the extra assumption of
higher-genus modular invariance is dropped, is confirmed in the case of the
unitary N=2 minimal models by simple counting arguments.Comment: 53 pages; Latex; minor changes in v2: intro expanded, references
