    Quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases with large scattering length

    Bose gases confined in highly-elongated harmonic traps are investigated over a wide range of interaction strengths using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We find that the properties of a Bose gas under tight transverse confinement are well reproduced by a 1d model Hamiltonian with contact interactions. We point out the existence of a unitary regime, where the properties of the quasi-1d Bose gas become independent of the actual value of the 3d scattering length. In this unitary regime, the energy of the system is well described by a hard rod equation of state.     Macroeconometric Modelling with a Global Perspective

    This paper provides a synthesis and further development of a global modelling approach introduced in Pesaran, Schuermann and Weiner (2004), where country specific models in the form of VARX* structures are estimated relating a vector of domestic variables to their foreign counterparts and then consistently combined to form a Global VAR (GVAR). It is shown that VARX* models can be derived as the solution to a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model where over-identifying long-run theoretical relations can be tested and imposed if acceptable. Similarly, short-run over-identifying theoretical restrictions can be tested and imposed if accepted. The assumption of the weak exogeneity of the foreign variables for the long-run parameters can be tested, where foreign variables can be interpreted as proxies for global factors. Rather than using deviations from ad hoc statistical trends, the equilibrium values of the variables reflecting the long-run theory embodied in the model can be calculated

Ces systĂšmes doivent aujourd'hui rĂ©pondre Ă  des enjeux de plus en plus diversifiĂ©s. Les techniques mises en Âœuvre deviennent Ă©galement de plus en plus diversifiĂ©es. Cette multiplication des fonctions et des dispositifs concourt Ă  accroĂźtre le nombre d'organisations concernĂ©es et actives dans la gestion du systĂšme. Se pose alors la question de la coordination d'une pluralitĂ© d'organisations, gĂ©rant une pluralitĂ© d'ouvrages dans une grande diversitĂ© d'objectifs et d'intĂ©rĂȘts. L'enjeu principal devient donc le dĂ©veloppement d'un systĂšme durable de gestion des eaux urbaines qui se compose de dispositifs techniques et spatiaux, d'organisations en charge de ces dispositifs, et du bassin versant naturel correspondant au domaine d'influence. Cependant, pour gĂ©rer ce systĂšme, il faut dans un premier temps identifier les enjeux liĂ©s aux eaux urbaines. La multiplication des dispositifs et organisations, et le changement d'Ă©chelle pour considĂ©rer le systĂšme (ville + bassin versant naturel) nĂ©cessite en effet de repenser les services qu'il doit rendre.     Tourism income and economic growth in Greece: Empirical evidence from their cyclical components

    This paper examines the relationship between the cyclical components of Greek GDP and international tourism income for Greece for the period 1976–2004. Using spectral analysis the authors find that cyclical fluctuations of GDP have a length of about nine years and that international tourism income has a cycle of about seven years. The volatility of tourism income is more than eight times the volatility of the Greek GDP cycle. VAR analysis shows that the cyclical component of tourism income is significantly influencing the cyclical component of GDP in Greece. The findings support the tourism-led economic growth hypothesis and are of particular interest and importance to policy makers, financial analysts and investors dealing with the Greek tourism industry

    D-dimer and risk of thromboembolic and bleeding events in patients with atrial fibrillation - observations from the ARISTOTLE trial

    BackgroundD-dimer is related to adverse outcomes in arterial and venous thromboembolic diseases. ObjectivesTo evaluate the predictive value of D-dimer level for stroke, other cardiovascular events, and bleeds, in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) treated with oral anticoagulation with apixaban or warfarin; and to evaluate the relationship between the D-dimer levels at baseline and the treatment effect of apixaban vs. warfarin. MethodsIn the ARISTOTLE trial, 18201 patients with AF were randomized to apixaban or warfarin. D-dimer was analyzed in 14878 patients at randomization. The cohort was separated into two groups; not receiving vitaminK antagonist (VKA) treatment and receiving VKA treatment at randomization. ResultsHigher D-dimer levels were associated with increased frequencies of stroke or systemic embolism (hazard ratio [HR][Q4 vs. Q1]1.72, 95% confidence interval [CI]1.14-2.59, P=0.003), death (HR[Q4 vs. Q1]4.04, 95%CI3.06-5.33) and major bleeding (HR[Q4 vs. Q1]2.47, 95%CI1.77-3.45,

    Collaborative learning exercises for Teaching Protein Mass Spectrometry [post-print]

    A collaborative learning module for teaching protein mass spectrometry has been developed to overcome common obstacles to incorporating the modern topic of biological mass spectrometry into the undergraduate chemistry curriculum. Protein mass spectrometry data is provided to eliminate the need for expensive instrumentation, and an instructor’s manual gives necessary details for those unfamiliar with the topic. The first section provides background information on proteins and the field of proteomics. The second section describes the use of electrospray ionization to determine the molecular weight of a protein. The third section shows how to identify a protein using peptide mass mapping, and the fourth section describes tandem MS experiments for de novo peptide sequencing. Each section also includes lessons on the analytical instrumentation used to make mass measurements including electrospray ionization, matrix assisted laser desorption ionization, and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The module includes preclass reading assignments and small group problem solving exercises to be used during class sessions. The module was implemented over several semesters at both a small liberal arts college and a large research university. Assessment data from both institutions suggest that the module is effective in helping students to learn about mass-spectrometry-based proteomics. This freely available resource will assist instructors in introducing these topics to the undergraduate curriculum

    Beyond element-wise interactions: identifying complex interactions in biological processes

    Background: Biological processes typically involve the interactions of a number of elements (genes, cells) acting on each others. Such processes are often modelled as networks whose nodes are the elements in question and edges pairwise relations between them (transcription, inhibition). But more often than not, elements actually work cooperatively or competitively to achieve a task. Or an element can act on the interaction between two others, as in the case of an enzyme controlling a reaction rate. We call “complex” these types of interaction and propose ways to identify them from time-series observations. Methodology: We use Granger Causality, a measure of the interaction between two signals, to characterize the influence of an enzyme on a reaction rate. We extend its traditional formulation to the case of multi-dimensional signals in order to capture group interactions, and not only element interactions. Our method is extensively tested on simulated data and applied to three biological datasets: microarray data of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, local field potential recordings of two brain areas and a metabolic reaction. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that complex Granger causality can reveal new types of relation between signals and is particularly suited to biological data. Our approach raises some fundamental issues of the systems biology approach since finding all complex causalities (interactions) is an NP hard problem
