KPP reaction-diffusion equations with a non-linear loss inside a cylinder
We consider in this paper a reaction-diffusion system in presence of a flow
and under a KPP hypothesis. While the case of a single-equation has been
extensively studied since the pioneering Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piskunov paper,
the study of the corresponding system with a Lewis number not equal to 1 is
still quite open. Here, we will prove some results about the existence of
travelling fronts and generalized travelling fronts solutions of such a system
with the presence of a non-linear spacedependent loss term inside the domain.
In particular, we will point out the existence of a minimal speed, above which
any real value is an admissible speed. We will also give some spreading results
for initial conditions decaying exponentially at infinity

Comparison of Boltzmann Kinetics with Quantum Dynamics for a Chiral Yukawa Model Far From Equilibrium
Boltzmann equations are often used to describe the non-equilibrium
time-evolution of many-body systems in particle physics. Prominent examples are
the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the evolution of
the quark-gluon plasma after a relativistic heavy ion collision. However,
Boltzmann equations are only a classical approximation of the quantum
thermalization process, which is described by so-called Kadanoff-Baym
equations. This raises the question how reliable Boltzmann equations are as
approximations to the complete Kadanoff-Baym equations. Therefore, we present
in this article a detailed comparison of Boltzmann and Kadanoff-Baym equations
in the framework of a chirally invariant Yukawa-type quantum field theory
including fermions and scalars. The obtained numerical results reveal
significant differences between both types of equations. Apart from
quantitative differences, on a qualitative level the late-time universality
respected by Kadanoff-Baym equations is severely restricted in the case of
Boltzmann equations. Furthermore, Kadanoff-Baym equations strongly separate the
time scales between kinetic and chemical equilibration. In contrast to this
standard Boltzmann equations cannot describe the process of quantum-chemical
equilibration, and consequently also cannot feature the above separation of

Update on the Surgical Trial in Lobar Intracerebral Haemorrhage (STICH II):Statistical analysis plan
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous studies had suggested that the outcome for patients with spontaneous lobar intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) and no intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) might be improved with early evacuation of the haematoma. The Surgical Trial in Lobar Intracerebral Haemorrhage (STICH II) set out to establish whether a policy of earlier surgical evacuation of the haematoma in selected patients with spontaneous lobar ICH would improve outcome compared to a policy of initial conservative treatment. It is an international, multi-centre, prospective randomised parallel group trial of early surgery in patients with spontaneous lobar ICH. Outcome is measured at six months via a postal questionnaire.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Recruitment to the study began on 27 November 2006 and closed on 15 August 2012 by which time 601 patients had been recruited. The protocol was published in <it>Trials</it> (<url>http://www.trialsjournal.com/content/12/1/124/</url>). This update presents the analysis plan for the study without reference to the unblinded data. The trial data will not be unblinded until after follow-up is completed in early 2013. The main trial results will be presented in spring 2013 with the aim to publish in a peer-reviewed journal at the same time.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The data from the trial will provide evidence on the benefits and risks of early surgery in patients with lobar ICH.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>ISRCTN: ISRCTN22153967</p
Low Resolution Spectral Templates For AGNs and Galaxies From 0.03 -- 30 microns
We present a set of low resolution empirical SED templates for AGNs and
galaxies in the wavelength range from 0.03 to 30 microns based on the
multi-wavelength photometric observations of the NOAO Deep-Wide Field Survey
Bootes field and the spectroscopic observations of the AGN and Galaxy Evolution
Survey. Our training sample is comprised of 14448 galaxies in the redshift
range 0<~z<~1 and 5347 likely AGNs in the range 0<~z<~5.58. We use our
templates to determine photometric redshifts for galaxies and AGNs. While they
are relatively accurate for galaxies, their accuracies for AGNs are a strong
function of the luminosity ratio between the AGN and galaxy components.
Somewhat surprisingly, the relative luminosities of the AGN and its host are
well determined even when the photometric redshift is significantly in error.
We also use our templates to study the mid-IR AGN selection criteria developed
by Stern et al.(2005) and Lacy et al.(2004). We find that the Stern et
al.(2005) criteria suffers from significant incompleteness when there is a
strong host galaxy component and at z =~ 4.5, when the broad Halpha emission
line is redshifted into the [3.6] band, but that it is little contaminated by
low and intermediate redshift galaxies. The Lacy et al.(2004) criterion is not
affected by incompleteness at z =~ 4.5 and is somewhat less affected by strong
galaxy host components, but is heavily contaminated by low redshift star
forming galaxies. Finally, we use our templates to predict the color-color
distribution of sources in the upcoming WISE mission and define a color
criterion to select AGNs analogous to those developed for IRAC photometry. We
estimate that in between 640,000 and 1,700,000 AGNs will be identified by these
criteria, but will have serious completeness problems for z >~ 3.4.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 26 text pages
