    How to excite the internal modes of sine-Gordon solitons

    We investigate the dynamics of the sine-Gordon solitons perturbed by spatiotemporal external forces. We prove the existence of internal (shape) modes of sine-Gordon solitons when they are in the presence of inhomogeneous space-dependent external forces, provided some conditions (for these forces) hold. Additional periodic time-dependent forces can sustain oscillations of the soliton width. We show that, in some cases, the internal mode even can become unstable, causing the soliton to decay in an antisoliton and two solitons. In general, in the presence of spatiotemporal forces the soliton behaves as a deformable (non-rigid) object. A soliton moving in an array of inhomogeneities can also present sustained oscillations of its width. There are very important phenomena (like the soliton-antisoliton collisions) where the existence of internal modes plays a crucial role. We show that, under some conditions, the dynamics of the soliton shape modes can be chaotic. A short report of some of our results has been published in [J. A. Gonzalez et al., Phys. Rev.     Spatiotemporal chaotic dynamics of solitons with internal structure in the presence of finite-width inhomogeneities

    We present an analytical and numerical study of the Klein-Gordon kink-soliton dynamics in inhomogeneous media. In particular, we study an external field that is almost constant for the whole system but that changes its sign at the center of coordinates and a localized impurity with finite-width. The soliton solution of the Klein-Gordon-like equations is usually treated as a structureless point-like particle. A richer dynamics is unveiled when the extended character of the soliton is taken into account. We show that interesting spatiotemporal phenomena appear when the structure of the soliton interacts with finite-width inhomogeneities. We solve an inverse problem in order to have external perturbations which are generic and topologically equivalent to well-known bifurcation models and such that the stability problem can be solved exactly. We also show the different quasiperiodic and chaotic motions the soliton undergoes as a time-dependent force pumps energy into the traslational mode of the kink and relate these dynamics with the excitation of the shape modes of the soliton.Comment: 10 pages Revtex style article, 22 gziped postscript figures and 5 jpg figure

    Remote Photonic THz Generation using an Optical Frequency Comb and Multicore Fiber

    This paper proposes and demonstrates a photonic THz generation technique based on an optical frequency comb and multicore fiber (MCF) transmission, with the advantage of remote generation with great reconfigurability and reduced digital signal processing (DSP). The feasibility of the proposed technique is evaluated experimentally comparing the performance when transmitting a data wavelength and a local oscillator for optical heterodyning over a single core or over different cores in a 1-km MCF link. The proposed remote photonic THz generation technique is demonstrated employing a 16QAM 12.5 GBd signal. A short wireless transmission at 183 GHz center frequency with 0.25 m antenna-separation is achieved after 1 km MCF, meeting the soft-decision decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) bit error rate (BER) recommendation of 210-2. The analysis includes the received photocurrent range for which the BER meets the standard hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) recommendation of 3.810-3 BER. The BER performance is analyzed considering different DSP configurations, with and without frequency offset estimation (FOE) and decision-driven least mean squares (DD LMS) equalization. The performance of the remote photonic THz generation technique is evaluated comparatively against traditional free-running laser transmission over MCF, confirming the advantage of using comb generation to reduce the frequency offset fluctuation and simplify the DSP

    Multicore fiber-assisted photonic sub-THz generation for full-duplex wireless transmission

    This paper evaluates experimentally a centralized radio access network (C-RAN) based on multi-core fiber (MCF) for the transmission of high-bandwidth signals in the sub-THz band. We compare the system performance when the data and carrier wavelengths to be mixed at the receiver for optical heterodyning are transmitted over the same or over different cores of a MCF link. Full-duplex transmission on MCF is evaluated using the same received wireless signal downconverted and transmitted back as uplink over the same carrier wavelength. The performance with different digital signal processing (DSP) configurations and with higher-power interference in the other cores are also analyzed in this work. Successful provision of 12.5 GBd 16QAM signals is achieved after 1-km of 7-core MCF transmission including a short wireless link at 182 GHz, obtained with optical heterodyning. C-RAN implementation with MCF simplifies the remote nodes as all the lasers can be located in the central office, while minimizing the number of lasers needed at the central office thanks to wavelength re-use. It also provides more flexibility to the system, as it enables using the same LO for different purposes (i.e. THz generation of other data or optical modulation for uplink transmission)

    Terahertz wireless communication is receiving great interest from researchers and industries, thanks to the new spectral windows between 0.1 and 1 THz offering opportunities for ultra-high-data-rate wireless transmission. Wavelength division multiplexing for wireless-over-fiber is foreseen as an enabling technique to support connection between base stations and a central station. This paper reviews architectures for photonic distribution and generation of multiband signals for sub- THz wireless communications, giving rates up to 100 Gb/s (20 Gb/s per band) using the full spectrum between 220 GHz and 280 GHz for downlink wireless transmission, and 10 Gb/s for uplink using on-off keying

    Cost-utility of a walking programme for moderately depressed, obese, or overweight elderly women in primary care: a randomised controlled trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is a considerable public health burden due to physical inactivity, because it is a major independent risk factor for several diseases (e.g., type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, moderate mood disorders neurotic diseases such as depression, etc.). This study assesses the cost utility of the adding a supervised walking programme to the standard "best primary care" for overweight, moderately obese, or moderately depressed elderly women.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One-hundred six participants were randomly assigned to an interventional group (n = 55) or a control group (n = 51). The intervention consisted of an invitation, from a general practitioner, to participate in a 6-month walking-based, supervised exercise program with three 50-minute sessions per week. The main outcome measures were the healthcare costs from the Health System perspective and quality adjusted life years (QALYs) using EuroQol (EQ-5D.)</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the patients invited to participate in the program, 79% were successfully recruited, and 86% of the participants in the exercise group completed the programme. Over 6 months, the mean treatment cost per patient in the exercise group was €41 more than "best care". The mean incremental QALY of intervention was 0.132 (95% CI: 0.104–0.286). Each extra QALY gained by the exercise programme relative to best care cost €311 (95% CI, €143–€394). The cost effectiveness acceptability curves showed a 90% probability that the addition of the walking programme is the best strategy if the ceiling of inversion is €350/QALY.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The invitation strategy and exercise programme resulted in a high rate of participation and is a feasible and cost-effective addition to best care. The programme is a cost-effective resource for helping patients to increase their physical activity, according to the recommendations of general practitioners. Moreover, the present study could help decision makers enhance the preventive role of primary care and optimize health care resources.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>[ISRCTN98931797]</p
