Immunohistochemical expression of OCT4 and CD44 in major and minor salivary gland neoplasms
The aim of this study was to identify tumor parenchyma cells exhibiting immunohistochemical profile of stem cells by evaluating the immunoreactivity of OCT4 and CD44 in a number of cases of salivary gland neoplasms. The sample consisted of 20 pleomorphic adenomas, 20 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, and 20 adenoid cystic carcinomas located in major and minor salivary glands. The expression of OCT4 and CD44 was evaluated by the percentage of positive cells and the intensity of expression. All studied cases showed positive expression of OCT4 and CD44 and higher values than the control groups. For OCT4, luminal and non-luminal cells were immunostained in the case of pleomorphic adenomas and adenoid cystic carcinomas. Moreover, the immunoreactivity of CD44 was particularly evident in the nonluminal cells of these lesions. In mucoepidermoid carcinomas, there was immunoreactivity for both markers in squamous and intermediate cells and absence of staining in mucous cells. For both markers, a significantly higher immunostaining was verified in neoplasms located in the major salivary glands compared with lesions in minor salivary glands (p<0.001). In the total sample and in minor salivary glands, malignant neoplasms exhibited higher immunoreactivity for OCT4 than pleomorphic adenoma. A significant moderate positive correlation (r = 0.444 and p ≤ 0.001) was found between OCT4 and CD44 immunoexpression in the total sample. The high expression of OCT4 and CD44 may indicate that these proteins play an important role in identifying tumor stem cells
Clinicopathological study of oral focal mucinosis : a retrospective case series
Oral focal mucinosis (OFM) is a rare soft tissue lesion of unknown etiology that exhibits tumor-like growth. It is considered the oral counterpart of cutaneous focal mucinosis or cutaneous myxoid cyst. This is a retrospective study of oral OFM diagnosed over a period of 42 years at an oral pathology service. Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical data were analyzed. Alcian blue staining and S-100 immunohistochemistry were performed. Eleven cases were retrieved (4:1 female-to-male ratio). The mean age was 44 years. The gingiva was the most affected site. The main clinical presentation was sessile or pedunculated lesions of fibrous or hyperplasic appearance, most of them asymptomatic. Positive Alcian blue staining and absence of S-100 protein were observed in all specimens, which supported the histological diagnosis of OFM. Surgical excision was the treatment of choice. Although rare, this study supports the inclusion of OFM in the differential diagnosis of intraoral myxoid lesions
Epidemiologic study of odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts in children and adolescents of a Brazilian population
The objective of this study was to describe the frequency of cystic lesions in a Brazilian population of patients histopathologically diagnosed in the first and second decade of life. Retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. Biopsy records were obtained from the archives of a Brazilian referral center between 1980 and 2016. A total of 2.114 biopsy records of pediatric patients were analyzed with oral and maxillofacial lesions. Data such as gender, age, anatomical location, and histopathological diagnosis were collected and categorized. Among all oral and maxillofacial lesions (n=2.114), were diagnosed 294 cases of odontogenic cysts (13.9%) and 16 cases of non-odontogenic cysts (0.8%). The most frequent lesions in each group were, respectively: radicular cyst (n=145) and epidermoid cyst (n=4). These lesions were most common in female (n=158), with a mean age of 14 years. For intraosseous lesions, the mandible (n=148) was the most affected anatomic site; moreover, the floor of the mouth (n=6) was most affected by cysts in soft tissues. Odontogenic cysts were relatively common in population studied, but non-odontogenic cysts were rare in these patients
Aim Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMDs) are lesions and epithelial conditions that present an increased risk of malignancy. In this research, the aim was to identify the profile of Brazilian scientific production on DOPMs, based on a bibliometric analysis of the works presented at the Meetings of the Brazilian Dental Research Society (SBPqO). Materials and Methods: a bibliometric study was carried out, in which the annals of the annual SBPqO meetings held between 2015 and 2019 were analyzed. Abstracts about DOPMs presented in any category were included and the following information was extracted: year, study design, type of DOPM, federative unit, location and educational institution of origin. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: 91 abstracts were identified. Most were published in 2015 (24.2%) and by authors from the state of São Paulo (22%). Leukoplakia was the most frequent disorder (36.2%), followed by actinic cheilitis (35.2%). Most of the studies were authored by researchers from the Southeast (29%) and South (28%) regions. Regarding the educational institution, a large part (68.1%) came from public universities. The most frequent type of study was basic laboratory research (57.1%). Discussion: the study findings indicate that the number of researches on DOPMs presented at the SBPqO Meetings is still small, concentrated in the Southeast region and in public universities. Conclusion: conducting new research on this topic is very important, as it allows the discovery of information relevant to the health of individuals in the face of this neoplasm.

Temporomandibular joint disk adhesion: evidence from magnetic resonance images
This case report has the aim to present an adhesion of the temporomadibular disc to the articular eminence, diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging images. A 37-year-old female patient with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disk adhesion on the left side and complaining of bilateral otalgia over the last 2 years is reported in the present article. The patient did not complain of articular pain or clicking, or any other noises of any nature. Clinical observation showed that the patient had restricted jaw opening, with mandibular deviation the left side without correction during mandibular movement. Our diagnostic impression was of partial anterior disk displacement with reduction of the right side disc; and partial anterior disk displacement with reduction and disc disk adhesion with hypo-mobility of the condyle, on the left temporomandibular joint. The peculiarity of this reported case is the fact that besides the bilateral partial anterior disc displacement, there was also found an adhesion of the disc on the left side. In conclusion, the magnetic resonance imaging exam of the temporomandibular joint can be considered an exam of choice for the evaluation of disc positioning and its morphological alterations

Report of rare case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in the buccal mucosa: review of diagnostic, histopathological and immunohistochemical criteria
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon intermediate-grade soft tissue sarcoma. The tumor is found preferentially on the trunk, whereas the head and neck region are affected in only 10% to 15% of cases. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman with a 5-month history of an asymptomatic, firm, yellow nodule in the mucosa of the right cheek measuring 2.5 cm. The clinical diagnosis was lipoma and an excisional biopsy was obtained. Histopathological analysis revealed a proliferation of spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells arranged in interlacing fascicles amidst fibrous stroma. Low mitotic activity (2 mitoses per field) and deep cell infiltration into adipose tissue were observed. These features led to the histopathological diagnosis of a malignant low-grade mesenchymal cell tumor. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed negative staining for α-SMA, S-100, and Bcl-2, but positive staining for Ki-67 (18%) and strong and diffuse staining for CD34. These findings were compatible with the diagnosis of DFSP. Only two cases of DFSP in the oral cavity, both involving the cheek mucosa, have been described so far, highlighting the rarity of the present case
