Can ultrastrong coupling change ground state chemical reactions?
Recent advancements on the fabrication of organic micro- and nanostructures
have permitted the strong collective light-matter coupling regime to be reached
with molecular materials. Pioneering works in this direction have shown the
effects of this regime in the excited state reactivity of molecular systems and
at the same time has opened up the question of whether it is possible to
introduce any modifications in the electronic ground energy landscape which
could affect chemical thermodynamics and/or kinetics. In this work, we use a
model system of many molecules coupled to a surface-plasmon field to gain
insight on the key parameters which govern the modifications of the
ground-state Potential Energy Surface (PES). Our findings confirm that the
energetic changes per molecule are determined by single-molecule-light
couplings which are essentially local, in contrast with those of the
electronically excited states, for which energetic corrections are of a
collective nature. Still, we reveal some intriguing quantum-coherent effects
associated with pathways of concerted reactions, where two or more molecules
undergo reactions simultaneously, and which can be of relevance in low-barrier
reactions. Finally, we also explore modifications to nonadiabatic dynamics and
conclude that, for this particular model, the presence of a large number of
dark states yields negligible changes. Our study reveals new possibilities as
well as limitations for the emerging field of polariton chemistry

Composite polymer membranes for laserinduced fluorescence thermometry
We demonstrate a modified version of laser-induced fluorescence thermometry (LIFT) for mapping temperature gradients in the vicinity of small photothermal devices. Our approach is based on temperature sensitive fluorescent membranes fabricated with rhodamine B and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Relevant membrane features for LIFT, such as temperature sensitivity, thermal quenching and photobleaching are presented for a range of 25 °C to 90 °C, and their performance is evaluated upon obtaining the temperature gradients produced in the proximity of optical fiber micro-heaters. Our results show that temperature measurements in regions as small as 750 μm x 650 μm, with a temperature resolution of 1 °C, can be readily obtained
Charge control in laterally coupled double quantum dots
We investigate the electronic and optical properties of InAs double quantum
dots grown on GaAs (001) and laterally aligned along the [110] crystal
direction. The emission spectrum has been investigated as a function of a
lateral electric field applied along the quantum dot pair mutual axis. The
number of confined electrons can be controlled with the external bias leading
to sharp energy shifts which we use to identify the emission from neutral and
charged exciton complexes. Quantum tunnelling of these electrons is proposed to
explain the reversed ordering of the trion emission lines as compared to that
of excitons in our system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures submitted to PRB Rapid Com
This research aims to study mechanical behaviour and relevant properties of masonry mortars fabricated using fine recycled aggregate in different mixture proportions. Fine recycled aggregates samples originated from the ceramic and concrete recycling process and coming from two recycling plants of Madrid region have been used. Tests were performed using 1:3:0.5 volumetric cement-to-aggregate-to-water ratio. Standardized sand with fine recycled aggregate replacement percentages were: 10%, 15%, 25%, 35% and 45%.
A continuous size distribution curve can be observed and the main crystalline phases determined have been quartz, calcite and gypsum. Compressive strength, shrinkage and bond strength tests revealed poorer performance of recycled mortars compared to the conventional mortars; however, specific values are within the limits established by the manufacturers and standards. This study shows that cement-based mortars prepared with volumetric ratio 1:3:0.5 may contain up to 45% of fine recycled aggregates, without their properties being affected and without presenting significant losses.
Hypoxic Cell Waves around Necrotic Cores in Glioblastoma: A Biomathematical Model and its Therapeutic Implications
Glioblastoma is a rapidly evolving high-grade astrocytoma that is
distinguished pathologically from lower grade gliomas by the presence of
necrosis and microvascular hiperplasia. Necrotic areas are typically surrounded
by hypercellular regions known as "pseudopalisades" originated by local tumor
vessel occlusions that induce collective cellular migration events. This leads
to the formation of waves of tumor cells actively migrating away from central
hypoxia. We present a mathematical model that incorporates the interplay among
two tumor cell phenotypes, a necrotic core and the oxygen distribution. Our
simulations reveal the formation of a traveling wave of tumor cells that
reproduces the observed histologic patterns of pseudopalisades. Additional
simulations of the model equations show that preventing the collapse of tumor
microvessels leads to slower glioma invasion, a fact that might be exploited
for therapeutic purposes.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure
A search for magnetic fields on central stars in planetary nebulae
One of the possible mechanisms responsible for the panoply of shapes in
planetary nebulae is the presence of magnetic fields that drive the ejection of
ionized material during the proto-planetary nebula phase. Therefore, detecting
magnetic fields in such objects is of key importance for understanding their
dynamics. Still, magnetic fields have not been detected using polarimetry in
the central stars of planetary nebulae. Circularly polarized light spectra have
been obtained with the Focal Reducer and Low Dispersion Spectrograph at the
Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory and the Intermediate
dispersion Spectrograph and Imaging System at the William Herschel Telescope.
Nineteen planetary nebulae spanning very different morphology and evolutionary
stages have been selected. Most of central stars have been observed at
different rotation phases to point out evidence of magnetic variability. In
this paper, we present the result of two observational campaigns aimed to
detect and measure the magnetic field in the central stars of planetary nebulae
on the basis of low resolution spectropolarimetry. In the limit of the adopted
method, we can state that large scale fields of kG order are not hosted on the
central star of planetary nebulae.Comment: Paper accepted to be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics on

This work studies the physical and mechanical properties of recycled concrete aggregate (recycled aggregate from concrete waste) and their influence in structural recycled concrete compressive strength. For said purpose, a database has been developed with the experimental results of 152 works selected from over 250 international references. The processed database results indicate that the most sensitive properties of recycled aggregate quality are density and absorption. Moreover, the study analyses how the recycled aggregate (both percentage and quality) and the mixing procedure (pre-soaking or adding extra water) influence the recycled concrete strength of different categories (high or low water to cement ratios). When recycled aggregate absorption is low (under 5%), pre-soaking or adding extra water to avoid loss in workability will negatively affect concrete strength (due to the bleeding effect), whereas with high water absorption this does not occur and both of the aforementioned correcting methods can be accurately employed.
Selective interactions between short-distance pollen and seed dispersal in self-compatible species.
In plants, genes may disperse through both pollen and seeds. Here we provide a first theoretical study of the mechanisms and consequences of the joint evolution of pollen and seed dispersal. We focus on hermaphroditic self-compatible species distributed in structured populations, assuming island dispersal of pollen and seeds among small patches of plants within large populations. Three traits are studied: the rate of among-patch seed dispersal, the rate of among-patch pollen dispersal, and the rate of within-patch pollen movement. We first analytically derive the evolutionary equilibrium state of each trait, dissect the pairwise selective interactions, and describe the joint three-trait evolutionary equilibrium under the cost of dispersal and kin competition. These results are then analytically and numerically extended to the case when selfed seeds suffer from depressed competitiveness (inbreeding depression, no heterosis). Finally individual-based simulations are used to account for a more realistic model of inbreeding load. Pollen movement is shown to generate opposite selection pressures on seed dispersal depending on spatial scale: within-patch pollen movement favors seed dispersal, whereas among-patch pollen dispersal inhibits seed dispersal. Seed dispersal selects for short-distance movements of pollen and it selects against long-distance dispersal. These interactions shape the joint evolution of these traits. Kin competition favors among-patch seed dispersal over among-patch pollen dispersal for low costs of within-patch pollen movement (and vice versa for significant costs of within-patch pollen movement). Inbreeding depression favors allogamy through high rates of within- and among-patch pollen movement. Surprisingly, it may select either for or against seed dispersal depending on the cost of among-patch pollen dispersal. Heterosis favors increased among-patch dispersal through pollen and seeds. But because these two stages inhibit each other, their joint evolution might lead to decreased seed dispersal in the presence of heterosis. Of crucial importance are the costs of dispersal
