A VLSI-oriented and power-efficient approach for dynamic texture recognition applied to smoke detection

    Get PDF
The recognition of dynamic textures is fundamental in processing image sequences as they are very common in natural scenes. The computation of the optic flow is the most popular method to detect, segment and analyse dynamic textures. For weak dynamic textures, this method is specially adequate. However, for strong dynamic textures, it implies heavy computational load and therefore an important energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a novel approach intented to be implemented by very low-power integrated vision devices. It is based on a simple and flexible computation at the focal plane implemented by power-efficient hardware. The first stages of the processing are dedicated to remove redundant spatial information in order to obtain a simplified representation of the original scene. This simplified representation can be used by subsequent digital processing stages to finally decide about the presence and evolution of a certain dynamic texture in the scene. As an application of the proposed approach, we present the preliminary results of smoke detection for the development of a forest fire detection system based on a wireless vision sensor network.Junta de Andalucía (CICE) 2006-TIC-235

Nonequilibrium chiral perturbation theory and pion decay functions

    Get PDF
We extend chiral perturbation theory to study a meson gas out of thermal equilibrium. Assuming that the system is initially in equilibrium at T-i < T-c and working within the Schwinger-Keldysh contour technique, we define consistently the time-dependent temporal and spatial pion decay functions, the counterparts of the pion decay constants, and calculate them to next to leading order. The link with curved space-time QFT allows to establish nonequilibrium renormalisation. The short-time behaviour and the applicability of our model to a heavy-ion collision plasma are also discussed in this work

The presence of universal accessibility in doctoral dissertations deposited in Spain between 1998-1999 and 2017-2018 academic years

    Get PDF
The goal of this research is the identification and analysis of doctoral dissertations registered in Spain that address universal accessibility as a topic in order to detect trends, the scope for development and leading institutions. The TESEO database has been used as a basic tool. A significant number of dissertations on universal accessibility published in Spain between 1998-1999 and 2017-2018 academic years have been identified, although these make up a small proportion of the total number of those registered. Specifically, the database contains 108 dissertations on this subject. The most common topics are the accessibility to digital services in general, accessibility to art, culture and tourism, inclusive education, assistive products, accessibility to the urban environment, transport and buildings, and accessibility as a fundamental right. Some of the dissertations found a deal with subjects rarely studied from the point of view of universal accessibility, such as banking, communication, employment, the home and R&D&I processes. The educational institutions which have published the largest number of these dissertations on universal accessibility are the Technical University of Madrid and the University of Granada, followed by the University of Valencia and the Technical University of Valencia.Peer Reviewe

Astrophysical parameters and orbital solution of the peculiar X-ray transient IGR J00370+6122

    Get PDF
BD+6073 is the optical counterpart of the X-ray source IGR J00370+6122, a probable accretion-powered X-ray pulsar. The X-ray light curve of this binary system shows clear periodicity at 15.7 d, which has been interpreted as repeated outbursts around the periastron of an eccentric orbit. We obtained high-resolution spectra of BD+6073 at different epochs. We used the FASTWind code to generate a stellar atmosphere model to fit the observed spectrum and obtain physical magnitudes. The synthetic spectrum was used as a template for cross-correlation with the observed spectra to measure radial velocities. The radial velocity curve provided an orbital solution for the system. We have also analysed the RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT light curves to confirm the stability of the periodicity. BD +6073 is a BN0.7 Ib low-luminosity supergiant located at an approximate distance of 3.1 kpc, in the CasOB4 association. We derive Teff=24000 K and log gc=3.0, and chemical abundances consistent with a moderately high level of evolution. The spectroscopic and evolutionary masses are consistent at the 1 sigma level with a mass of 15 solar masses. The recurrence time of the X-ray flares is the orbital period of the system. The NS is in a high eccentricity (e=0.56) orbit, and the X-ray emission is strongly peaked around orbital phase 0.2, though the observations are consistent with some level of X-ray activity happening at all orbital phases. The X-ray behaviour of IGR J00370+6122 is reminiscent of intermediate SFXTs, though its peak luminosity is rather low. The orbit is somewhat wider than those of classical persistent supergiant X-ray binaries, which, combined with the low luminosity of the mass donor, explains the low X-ray luminosity. IGR J00370+6122 will likely evolve towards a persistent supergiant system, highlighting the evolutionary connection between different classes of wind-accreting X-ray sources.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

Análisis de la rentabilidad en el sector de la distribución en Europa

This empine study aims at stablishing which are the main factors that explain profitability in companies operating in the european distribution sector and their reiative importance. Methodology is based on an analysis of variance and its components. Although this type of analysis has been frequently applied on the industrial sector, its use in the distribution business is very innovative, above all when we consider the country as one of the key factors.

Why does performance vary between one company and another? Why do some firms obtain better profits or performance than others? As say Jarillo states (1990, p. VII), "this is undoubtedly a major question for anyone involved in research and teaching in business management". This question has been the basis of a great deal of research in the last few years from the point of view of both industrial economics and strategic management. The aim of this paper, with regard to the latter subject, is to provide results connected with the understanding of this phenomenon. It points out some factors which influence the variability of the performance of Andalusian firms, in addition to the intensity of these factors.
