[EN] This article considers the status of the project for the Finney Guest House within the professional career of Paul Rudolph, and its relationship to two further projects carried out during the same period, the Revere Quality House and the Healy Guest House. In all three cases Roberta Healy Finney appeared as the client or promotor, which leads to the thought that the Finney House might be a precedent for the Healy House. This text comments on some of the best drawings made by Paul Rudolph in the 1940s, including an exercise in the form of a project that he completed under the direction of Walter Gropius, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for obtaining the degree of Master in Architecture at the University of Harvard.[ES] El artículo analiza la relevancia del proyecto de la Finney Guest House en la trayectoria profesional de Paul Rudolph, y su relación con otros dos proyectos realizados en los mismos años, la Revere Quality House y la Healy Guest House. Simulation of the phonon-limited electron mobility in multi-layer MoS 2 field-effect transistors

    Get PDF
We study the electron mobility in Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor Field-Effect-Transistors which use multi-layer MoS 2 as channel. The electrostatic behavior is calculated by self-consistently solving the 1D Poisson and Schrödinger equations under the effective mass approximation. Phonon-limited electron mobility is then calculated solving the Boltzmann Transport Equation under the Momentum Relaxation Time approximation for different device sizes and bias conditions

Optimal management of bio-based energy supply chains under parametric uncertainty through a data-driven decision-support framework

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the optimal management of a multi-objective bio-based energy supply chain network subjected to multiple sources of uncertainty. The complexity to obtain an optimal solution using traditional uncertainty management methods dramatically increases with the number of uncertain factors considered. Such a complexity produces that, if tractable, the problem is solved after a large computational effort. Therefore, in this work a data-driven decision-making framework is proposed to address this issue. Such a framework exploits machine learning techniques to efficiently approximate the optimal management decisions considering a set of uncertain parameters that continuously influence the process behavior as an input. A design of computer experiments technique is used in order to combine these parameters and produce a matrix of representative information. These data are used to optimize the deterministic multi-objective bio-based energy network problem through conventional optimization methods, leading to a detailed (but elementary) map of the optimal management decisions based on the uncertain parameters. Afterwards, the detailed data-driven relations are described/identified using an Ordinary Kriging meta-model. The result exhibits a very high accuracy of the parametric meta-models for predicting the optimal decision variables in comparison with the traditional stochastic approach. Besides, and more importantly, a dramatic reduction of the computational effort required to obtain these optimal values in response to the change of the uncertain parameters is achieved. Thus the use of the proposed data-driven decision tool promotes a time-effective optimal decision making, which represents a step forward to use data-driven strategy in large-scale/complex industrial problems.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Regulation of Protein Secretion Systems Mediated by Cyclic Diguanylate in Plant-Interacting Bacteria

    Get PDF
The ubiquitous second messenger cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) is involved in the regulation of different processes in bacteria. In phytopathogens, intracellular fluctuations in the concentration of this molecule contribute to the lifestyle switching from a motile and virulent stage to a sessile and biofilm-forming phase. Among the virulence mechanisms used by bacterial pathogens, different specific type secretion systems (TSSs) and the effector proteins that they translocate are included. Some of these TSS are conceived to suppress host immune responses during bacterial colonization. The modulation of the expression of secretion systems components and/or effector proteins can be influenced by c-di-GMP levels at transcriptional, translational, or post-translational levels and can take place directly by binding to specific or global regulators, or via transducer proteins. Different genera of plant-interacting bacteria have been analyzed to shed some light in the implications of c-di-GMP in the regulation of host plant colonization through protein secretion systems. Expression of (1) adhesins secreted by Type 1 secretion systems to bind the host plant in Pectobacterium (formerly Erwinia) and some beneficial Pseudomonas strains; (2) catalytic exoproteins delivered by Type 2 secretion systems to break plant cell wall in Dickeya; (3) effectors secreted by Type 3 secretion systems to suppress plant immunity in Xanthomonas; or (4) the activity of Type 6 secretion systems to export an ATPase in Pseudomonas, are finely tuned by c-di-GMP levels. In this minireview, we summarize the knowledge available about the implications of c-di-GMP in the regulation of protein secretion in different plant-interacting bacteria.Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitivity BIO2016-78409-

Antipatterns: A Compendium of Bad Practices in Software Development Processes

This article presents a set of patterns that can be found to perform best practices in software processes that are directly related to the problem of implementing the activities of the process, the roles involved, the knowledge generated and the inputs and outputs belonging to the process. In this work, a definition of the architecture is encouraged by using different recurrent configurations that strengthen the process and yield efficient results for the development of a software project. The patterns presented constitute a catalog, which serves as a vocabulary for communication among project participants [1], [2], and also can be implemented through software tools, thus facilitating patterns implementation [3]. Additionally, a tool that can be obtained under GPL (General Public license) is provided for this purpose

A Novel Analysis of Periodic Structures Based on Loaded Transmission Lines

    Get PDF
Periodically loaded transmission lines are characterized by a frequency response with regular pass and stopbands. Interestingly, each of the passbands exhibits a peculiar comb-alike behavior, in which again, nested (or internal) pass and stopbands can be identified. In this work, we focus our attention on the effect that changing the characteristics of the periodic load (which is a varactor capacitance in our case) has in this peculiar response of the structure, providing a novel and detailed analysis of such bands. The control of the response of the structure when changing the properties of the load allows to adjust the transmission characteristics of the circuit once it is fabricated. To this purpose, we derive the design equations of the periodically loaded structures, obtaining the expressions which govern the position and number of the transmission peaks, i.e., the points where |S21| = 1 for both cases, the frequency sweep and the capacitance sweep. We experimentally validate our analysis by fabricating a periodic structure with five unit cells and compare the measurements against both theoretical results and circuit simulations to an excellent agreement. The present analysis paves the way towards further exploitation of these kind of structures for the design of different microwave applications such as tunable filters or phase shiftersMCIN/AEI/PTA grantPTA2020-018250-IPAIDI 2020European Social Fund Operational Programme 2014-2020 under Grant 20804Ministerio de Universidades under Grant CAS21/00483FEDER/Junta de Andalucía-Consejería de Transformación Económica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades under Grants A-TIC-646-UGR20, B-RNM-375-UGR18P20_00633MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033European Union “NextGenerationEU”/PRTRPID2020-116518GB-I00TED2021-129769B-I00TED2021-129938B-I0
