Numerical study of the shape and integral parameters of a dendrite
We present a numerical study of sidebranching of a solidifying dendrite by
means of a phase--field model. Special attention is paid to the regions far
from the tip of the dendrite, where linear theories are no longer valid. Two
regions have been distinguished outside the linear region: a first one in which
sidebranching is in a competition process and a second one further down where
branches behave as independent of each other. The shape of the dendrite and
integral parameters characterizing the whole dendrite (contour length and area
of the dendrite) have been computed and related to the characteristic tip
radius for both surface tension and kinetic dominated dendrites. Conclusions
about the different behaviors observed and comparison with available

Room temperature ferromagnetic-like behavior in Mn-implanted and post-annealed InAs layers deposited by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
We report on the magnetic and structural properties of Ar and Mn implanted
InAs epitaxial films grown on GaAs (100) by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and
the effect of Rapid Thermal Annealing (RTA) for 30 seconds at 750C. Channeling
Particle Induced X- ray Emission (PIXE) experiments reveal that after Mn
implantation almost all Mn atoms are subsbtitutional in the In-site of the InAs
lattice, like in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS). All of these samples
show diamagnetic behavior. But, after RTA treatment the Mn-InAs films exhibit
room-temperature magnetism. According to PIXE measurements the Mn atoms are no
longer substitutional. When the same set of experiments were performed with As
as implantation ion all of the layers present diamagnetism without exception.
This indicates that the appearance of room-temperature ferromagnetic-like
behavior in the Mn-InAs-RTA layer is not related to lattice disorder produce
during implantation, but to a Mn reaction produced after a short thermal
treatment. X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and Rutherford Back Scattering
(RBS) measurements evidence the segregation of an oxygen deficient-MnO2 phase
(nominally MnO1.94) in the Mn-InAs-RTA epitaxial layers which might be on the
origin of room temperature ferromagnetic-like response observed.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. Acepted in J. Appl. Phy

PPAR gamma pro12Ala polymorphism and type 2 diabetes: a study in a spanish cohort
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a disease whose occurrence is increasing prevalent in westernized civilizations and is responsible for the proliferation in the morbidity and total mortality of patients with cardiovascular diseases, worldwide. However, the complexity in the treatment and prevention of T2D arises from the intricacy of the many physical and biological factors involved in its etiology. Impaired pathways for insulin signaling have been implicated as one the many factors in the development of T2D Individual peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) have previously exhibited associations with alterations of lipid profiles, fat tissue and T2D and displayed complications derived from high levels of glucose. However, PPARgamma has not yet been associated with the development or developmental pathways of T2D. We performed an observational study a Spanish cohort in order to better understand the association between the SNP PPARgamma polymorphism Pro12Ala in our patients and the incidence of T2D and other cardiovascular complications. We study did not find a statistically significant relationship between the Pro12Ala and T2D development in our cohort, future observations will help us to know the association with vascular disease in patients with T2D
Sharp-Interface Limit of a Fluctuating Phase-Field Model
We present a derivation of the sharp-interface limit of a generic fluctuating
phase-field model for solidification. As a main result, we obtain a
sharp-interface projection which presents noise terms in both the diffusion
equation and in the moving boundary conditions. The presented procedure does
not rely on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and can therefore be applied
to account for both internal and external fluctuations in either variational or
non-variational phase-field formulations. In particular, it can be used to
introduce thermodynamical fluctuations in non-variational formulations of the
phase-field model, which permit to reach better computational efficiency and
provide more flexibility for describing some features of specific physical
situations. This opens the possibility of performing quantitative phase-field
simulations in crystal growth while accounting for the proper fluctuations of

Lubrication of DLC Coatings with Two Tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate Anion-Based Ionic Liquids
The lubrication of a Cr-DLC coating with ethyl-dimethyl-2-methoxyethylammonium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluoropho-sphate [(NEMM)MOE][FAP] and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrro-lidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate [BMP] [FAP] ionic liquids (ILs) as 1 wt% additives to a polyalphaolefin (PAO 6) was studied. Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) was also used as reference in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the ILs. Reciprocating ball-on-plate tribological tests at loads of 20 and 40 N were performed. The results showed that both ILs exhibited a friction reduction, especially at the lowest load tested. Antiwear properties were also improved; the PAO 6 + 1% [BMP][FAP] mixture was slightly better, close to the values for PAO 6 + 1% ZDDP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the additiveâsurface interaction was responsible for the tribological improvement
From circular paths to elliptic orbits: A geometric approach to Kepler's motion
The hodograph, i.e. the path traced by a body in velocity space, was
introduced by Hamilton in 1846 as an alternative for studying certain dynamical
problems. The hodograph of the Kepler problem was then investigated and shown
to be a circle, it was next used to investigate some other properties of the
motion. We here propose a new method for tracing the hodograph and the
corresponding configuration space orbit in Kepler's problem starting from the
initial conditions given and trying to use no more than the methods of
synthetic geometry in a sort of Newtonian approach. All of our geometric
constructions require straight edge and compass only.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Cyclical Effects of Bank Capital Buffers with Imperfect Credit Markets: international evidence
This paper analyzes the cyclical effects of bank capital buffers using an international sample of 2,361 banks from 92 countries over the 1990-2007 period. We find that capital buffers reduce the bank credit supply but â through what could be âmonitoring or signaling effectsâ â have also an expansionary effect on economic activity by reducing lending and deposit rate spreads. This influence on lending and deposit rate spreads is more pronunced in developing countries and during downturns. The results suggest that capital buffers have a counter-cyclical effect in these countries. Our data do not suggest differences in the cyclical effects of capital buffers between Basel I and Basel II.
