Exploring 4D Quantum Hall Physics with a 2D Topological Charge Pump
The discovery of topological states of matter has profoundly augmented our
understanding of phase transitions in physical systems. Instead of local order
parameters, topological phases are described by global topological invariants
and are therefore robust against perturbations. A prominent example thereof is
the two-dimensional integer quantum Hall effect. It is characterized by the
first Chern number which manifests in the quantized Hall response induced by an
external electric field. Generalizing the quantum Hall effect to
four-dimensional systems leads to the appearance of a novel non-linear Hall
response that is quantized as well, but described by a 4D topological invariant
- the second Chern number. Here, we report on the first observation of a bulk
response with intrinsic 4D topology and the measurement of the associated
second Chern number. By implementing a 2D topological charge pump with
ultracold bosonic atoms in an angled optical superlattice, we realize a
dynamical version of the 4D integer quantum Hall effect. Using a small atom
cloud as a local probe, we fully characterize the non-linear response of the
system by in-situ imaging and site-resolved band mapping. Our findings pave the
way to experimentally probe higher-dimensional quantum Hall systems, where new
topological phases with exotic excitations are predicted
Observation of the Nernst signal generated by fluctuating Cooper pairs
Long-range order is destroyed in a superconductor warmed above its critical
temperature (Tc). However, amplitude fluctuations of the superconducting order
parameter survive and lead to a number of well established phenomena such as
paraconductivity : an excess of charge conductivity due to the presence of
short-lived Cooper pairs in the normal state. According to an untested theory,
these pairs generate a transverse thermoelectric (Nernst) signal. In amorphous
superconducting films, the lifetime of Cooper pairs exceeds the elastic
lifetime of quasi-particles in a wide temperature range above Tc; consequently,
the Cooper pairs Nernst signal dominate the response of the normal electrons
well above Tc. In two dimensions, the magnitude of the expected signal depends
only on universal constants and the superconducting coherence length, so the
theory can be unambiguously tested. Here, we report on the observation of a
Nernst signal in such a superconductor traced deep into the normal state. Since
the amplitude of this signal is in excellent agreement with the theoretical
prediction, the result provides the first unambiguous case for a Nernst effect
produced by short-lived Cooper pairs
Collapse of superconductivity in a hybrid tin-graphene Josephson junction array
When a Josephson junction array is built with hybrid
superconductor/metal/superconductor junctions, a quantum phase transition from
a superconducting to a two-dimensional (2D) metallic ground state is predicted
to happen upon increasing the junction normal state resistance. Owing to its
surface-exposed 2D electron gas and its gate-tunable charge carrier density,
graphene coupled to superconductors is the ideal platform to study the
above-mentioned transition between ground states. Here we show that decorating
graphene with a sparse and regular array of superconducting nanodisks enables
to continuously gate-tune the quantum superconductor-to-metal transition of the
Josephson junction array into a zero-temperature metallic state. The
suppression of proximity-induced superconductivity is a direct consequence of
the emergence of quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase of the
disks. Under perpendicular magnetic field, the competition between quantum
fluctuations and disorder is responsible for the resilience at the lowest
temperatures of a superconducting glassy state that persists above the upper
critical field. Our results provide the entire phase diagram of the disorder
and magnetic field-tuned transition and unveil the fundamental impact of
quantum phase fluctuations in 2D superconducting systems.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure

The semantics of untrustworthiness
We offer a formal treatment of the semantics of both complete and incomplete mistrustful or distrustful information transmissions. The semantics of such relations is analysed in view of rules that define the behaviour of a receiving agent. We justify this approach in view of human agent communications and secure system design. We further specify some properties of such relations
Use of recommended medications after myocardial infarction in Austria
Guidelines recommend long-term use of beta-blockers (BB), statins, and angiotensin-converting-enzyme-inhibitors or angiotensin-receptor-blockers (ACEI/ARB) after myocardial infarction (MI), but data on their use after discharge are scarce. From Austrian sickness funds claims, we identified all acute MI patients who were discharged within 30 days and who survived ≥120 days after MI in 2004. We ascertained outpatient use of ACEI/ARBs, BBs, statins, and aspirin from all filled prescriptions between discharge and 120 days post MI. Comorbidities were ascertained from use of indicator drugs during the preceding year. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the independent determinants of study drug use. We evaluated 4,105 MI patients, whose mean age was 68.8 (±13.2) years; 59.5% were men. Within 120 days after MI, 67% filled prescriptions for ACE/ARBs, 74% for BBs, and 67% for statin. While 41% received all these classes and 34% two, 25% of patients received only one or none of these drugs. Older age and presence of severe mental illness were associated with lower use of all drug classes. Diabetics had greater ACEI/ARB use. Fewer BBs were used in patients with obstructive lung disease. Statin use was lower in patients using treatment for congestive heart failure (all P < 0.001). We conclude that recommended medications were underused in Austrian MI survivors. Quality indicators should be established and interventions be implemented to ensure maximum secondary prevention after MI
Brain structural changes and neuropsychological impairments in male polydipsic schizophrenia
BACKGROUND: Polydipsia frequently occurs in schizophrenia patients. The excessive water loading in polydipsia occasionally induces a hyponatremic state and leads to water intoxication. Whether polydipsia in schizophrenic patients correlates with neuropsychological impairments or structural brain changes is not clear and remains controversial. METHODS: Eight polydipsic schizophrenia patients, eight nonpolydipsic schizophrenia patients, and eight healthy controls were recruited. All subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological testing. Structural abnormalities were analyzed using a voxel-based morphometry (VBM) approach, and patients’ neuropsychological function was assessed using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia, Japanese version (BACS-J). RESULTS: No significant differences were found between the two patient groups with respect to the clinical characteristics. Compared with healthy controls, polydipsic patients showed widespread brain volume reduction and neuropsychological impairment. Furthermore, the left insula was significantly reduced in polydipsic patients compared with nonpolydipsic patients. These nonpolydipsic patients performed intermediate to the other two groups in the neuropsychological function test. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible that polydipsia or the secondary hyponatremia might induce left insula volume reduction. Furthermore, this structural brain change may indirectly induce more severe neuropsychological impairments in polydipsic patients. Thus, we suggest that insula abnormalities might contribute to the pathophysiology of polydipsic patients
Cell-free (RNA) and cell-associated (DNA) HIV-1 and postnatal transmission through breastfeeding
<p>Introduction - Transmission through breastfeeding remains important for mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) in resource-limited settings. We quantify the relationship between cell-free (RNA) and cell-associated (DNA) shedding of HIV-1 virus in breastmilk and the risk of postnatal HIV-1 transmission in the first 6 months postpartum.</p>
<p>Materials and Methods - Thirty-six HIV-positive mothers who transmitted HIV-1 by breastfeeding were matched to 36 non-transmitting HIV-1 infected mothers in a case-control study nested in a cohort of HIV-infected women. RNA and DNA were quantified in the same breastmilk sample taken at 6 weeks and 6 months. Cox regression analysis assessed the association between cell-free and cell-associated virus levels and risk of postnatal HIV-1 transmission.</p>
<p>Results - There were higher median levels of cell-free than cell-associated HIV-1 virus (per ml) in breastmilk at 6 weeks and 6 months. Multivariably, adjusting for antenatal CD4 count and maternal plasma viral load, at 6 weeks, each 10-fold increase in cell-free or cell-associated levels (per ml) was significantly associated with HIV-1 transmission but stronger for cell-associated than cell-free levels [2.47 (95% CI 1.33–4.59) vs. aHR 1.52 (95% CI, 1.17–1.96), respectively]. At 6 months, cell-free and cell-associated levels (per ml) in breastmilk remained significantly associated with HIV-1 transmission but was stronger for cell-free than cell-associated levels [aHR 2.53 (95% CI 1.64–3.92) vs. 1.73 (95% CI 0.94–3.19), respectively].</p>
<p>Conclusions - The findings suggest that cell-associated virus level (per ml) is more important for early postpartum HIV-1 transmission (at 6 weeks) than cell-free virus. As cell-associated virus levels have been consistently detected in breastmilk despite antiretroviral therapy, this highlights a potential challenge for resource-limited settings to achieve the UNAIDS goal for 2015 of eliminating vertical transmission. More studies would further knowledge on mechanisms of HIV-1 transmission and help develop more effective drugs during lactation.</p>
