Initiation of non-tropical thunderstorms by solar activity
Correlative evidence accumulating since 1926 suggests that there must be some physical coupling mechanism between solar activity and thunderstorm occurrence in middle to high latitudes. Such a link may be provided by alteration of atmospheric electric parameters through the combined influence of high-energy solar protons and decreased cosmic ray intensities, both of which are associated with active solar events. The protons produce excess ionization near and above 20km, while the Forbush decreases a lowered conductivity and enhanced fair-weather atmospheric electric field below that altitude. Consequent effects ultimately lead to a charge distribution similar to that found in thunderclouds, and then other cloud physics processes take over to generate the intense electric fields required for lightning discharge
General relativity on a null surface: Hamiltonian formulation in the teleparallel geometry
The Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity on a null surface is
established in the teleparallel geometry. No particular gauge conditons on the
tetrads are imposed, such as the time gauge condition. By means of a 3+1
decomposition the resulting Hamiltonian arises as a completely constrained
system. However, it is structurally different from the the standard
Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) type formulation. In this geometrical framework the
basic field quantities are tetrads that transform under the global SO(3,1) and
the torsion tensor.Comment: 15 pages, Latex, no figures, to appear in the Gen. Rel. Gra
Lagrangian and Hamiltonian for the Bondi-Sachs metrics
We calculate the Hilbert action for the Bondi-Sachs metrics. It yields the
Einstein vacuum equations in a closed form. Following the Dirac approach to
constrained systems we investigate the related Hamiltonian formulation.Comment: 8 page
Atmospheric X-ray emission experiment for shuttle
An experiment designed to measure the spatial, temporal, and energy distribution of X-ray aurorae produced by precipitating electrons, is presented. The experiment will provide vital data on solar-terrestrial relationships that may lead to defining the transfer mechanism that causes certain terrestrial weather events and climatological behavior. An instrument concept is discussed, and is based on a spatially sensitive multiwire proportional counter, combined with collimators to produce X-ray images of the aurorae. An instrument pointing system, on which the counter can be mounted, will provide the required altitude control, and can be operated by a Spacelab payload specialist for full control over its observing and data taking modes
Loop Variable Inequalities in Gravity and Gauge Theory
We point out an incompleteness of formulations of gravitational and gauge
theories that use traces of holonomies around closed curves as their basic
variables. It is shown that in general such loop variables have to satisfy
certain inequalities if they are to give a description equivalent to the usual
one in terms of local gauge potentials.Comment: 10pp., TeX, Syracuse SU-GP-93/3-
Hall effect encoding of brushless dc motors
Encoding mechanism integral to the motor and using the permanent magnets embedded in the rotor eliminates the need for external devices to encode information relating the position and velocity of the rotating member
Equatorial X-rays and their effect on the lower mesosphere
On the night of May 23/24, 1975, a sequence of rocket and balloon experiments was launched from Chilca Base, Peru (12.5 deg S, 76.8 deg W, magnetic dip = - 0.7 deg). Detailed analysis and comparisons of the data yielded the first direct measurement of lower mesospheric response to a galactic X-ray source. This result could only have been determined at the equator, where cosmic ray background effects are minimal. The objective of the experiments was to seek out the equatorial energetic electron belt, sporadically reported to contain fluxes near auroral levels, measure the bremsstrahlung radiation produced by this particle belt, and determine the influence of this radiation on the middle atmosphere. High altitude rocket payloads (Nike Tomahawk 18.170 and 18.171) were launched to probe the thermosphere during and following the anticipated downward drift period. Each carried an on-axis X-ray scintillation detector and Geiger Mueller energetic electron detectors. Magnetometers and lunar sensors were used to determine payload aspect
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem in linearized gravity
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem has been very useful in constructing algebraically
special exact solutions of Einstein vacuum equation. Most of the physical
meaningful vacuum exact solutions are algebraically special. We show that the
Goldberg-Sachs theorem is not true in linearized gravity. This is a remarkable
result, which gives light on the understanding of the physical meaning of the
linearized solutions.Comment: 6 pages, no figures, LaTeX 2
Canonical General Relativity on a Null Surface with Coordinate and Gauge Fixing
We use the canonical formalism developed together with David Robinson to st=
udy the Einstein equations on a null surface. Coordinate and gauge conditions =
are introduced to fix the triad and the coordinates on the null surface. Toget=
her with the previously found constraints, these form a sufficient number of
second class constraints so that the phase space is reduced to one pair of
canonically conjugate variables: \Ac_2\and\Sc^2. The formalism is related to
both the Bondi-Sachs and the Newman-Penrose methods of studying the
gravitational field at null infinity. Asymptotic solutions in the vicinity of
null infinity which exclude logarithmic behavior require the connection to fall
off like after the Minkowski limit. This, of course, gives the previous
results of Bondi-Sachs and Newman-Penrose. Introducing terms which fall off
more slowly leads to logarithmic behavior which leaves null infinity intact,
allows for meaningful gravitational radiation, but the peeling theorem does not
extend to in the terminology of Newman-Penrose. The conclusions are in
agreement with those of Chrusciel, MacCallum, and Singleton. This work was
begun as a preliminary study of a reduced phase space for quantization of
general relativity.Comment: magnification set; pagination improved; 20 pages, plain te
On the Existence of Radiation Gauges in Petrov type II spacetimes
The radiation gauges used by Chrzanowski (his IRG/ORG) for metric
reconstruction in the Kerr spacetime seem to be over-specified. Their
specification consists of five conditions: four, which we treat here as valid
gauge conditions, plus an additional condition on the trace of the metric
perturbation. In this work, we utilize a newly developed form of the perturbed
Einstein equations to establish a condition -- on a particular tetrad component
of the stress-energy tensor -- under which the full IRG/ORG can be imposed.
Using gauge freedom, we are able to impose the full IRG for Petrov type II and
type D backgrounds, using a different tetrad for each case. As a specific
example, we work through the process of imposing the IRG in a Schwarzschild
background, using a more traditional approach. Implications for metric
reconstruction using the Teukolsky curvature perturbations in type D spacetimes
are briefly discussed.Comment: 21 pages, uses iop style files. v2: proved a stronger result for type
II backgrounds, added a subsection on remaining gauge freedom in the full IRG
and improved calrity and readability throughout due to insightful referee
