    Opposite Thermodynamic Arrows of Time

A model in which two weakly coupled systems maintain opposite running thermodynamic arrows of time is exhibited. Each experiences its own retarded electromagnetic interaction and can be seen by the other. The possibility of opposite-arrow systems at stellar distances is explored and a relation to dark matter suggested.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Poética del Postismo en la obra de Eduardo Chicharro

    Get PDF
Radiation from low-momentum zoom-whirl orbits

We study zoom-whirl behaviour of equal mass, non-spinning black hole binaries in full general relativity. The magnitude of the linear momentum of the initial data is fixed to that of a quasi-circular orbit, and its direction is varied. We find a global maximum in radiated energy for a configuration which completes roughly one orbit. The radiated energy in this case exceeds the value of a quasi-circular binary with the same momentum by 15%. The direction parameter only requires minor tuning for the localization of the maximum. There is non-trivial dependence of the energy radiated on eccentricity (several local maxima and minima). Correlations with orbital dynamics shortly before merger are discussed. While being strongly gauge dependent, these findings are intuitive from a physical point of view and support basic ideas about the efficiency of gravitational radiation from a binary system.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, Amaldi8 conference proceedings as publishe

Why Teachers Remain Teaching in Rural Districts: Listening to the Voices from the Field

    Get PDF
Retaining teachers is a problem in all districts but is especially difficult in rural areas. This survey research asked teachers in a western state to respond to open ended questions regarding their choice for teaching in a rural or urban area. Results indicate teachers work in a rural locale because they grew up in the area, already lived there as an adult, and/or had a spouse/partner with a job in the area. Both rural and non-rural teachers cited the importance of a positive school environment with supportive administrators and good working conditions. Teachers stated inadequate working conditions at school affected their decisions to leave the field. Based on results discussed here, key factors in making teaching a sustainable career and the predominant career challenges that teachers face are more similar across rural and non-rural settings than different, although there certainly are less predominant challenges unique to each setting

Functional Musical Sonification for Chronic Pain Support

    Get PDF
Chronic pain causes substantial disability, and people living with chronic pain often use protective behaviours and movements to minimize pain and worry about exacerbating pain during everyday activities such as loading the washing machine. We present work in progress on ubiquitous interactive sonification of body movement to help people with chronic pain to understand and positively modify their movements in clinical and functional situations. The sonification blends informational and aesthetic aspects and is intended for daily use

Embo: a Python package for empirical data analysis using the Information Bottleneck

    Get PDF
We present embo, a Python package to analyze empirical data using the Information Bottleneck (IB) method and its variants, such as the Deterministic Information Bottleneck (DIB). Given two random variables X and Y, the IB finds the stochastic mapping M of X that encodes the most information about Y, subject to a constraint on the information that M is allowed to retain about X. Despite the popularity of the IB, an accessible implementation of the reference algorithm oriented towards ease of use on empirical data was missing. Embo is optimized for the common case of discrete, lowdimensional data. Embo is fast, provides a standard data-processing pipeline, offers a parallel implementation of key computational steps, and includes reasonable defaults for the method parameters. Embo is broadly applicable to different problem domains, as it can be employed with any dataset consisting in joint observations of two discrete variables. It is available from the Python Package Index (PyPI), Zenodo and GitLab
