Legislation designed to enable prompt judicial supervision of private adoptions was the most significant advance in domestic relations law this year. The legislature also subjected the contracts and earnings of infants engaged in professional activities to judicial control. Notable Court of Appeals decisions granted an annulment for constructive abandonment through refusal of sexual relations, denied an injunction against divorce proceedings in a foreign nation, and refused to abrogate the old rule against actions in tort by a child against his parent. Probably the most notorious case of the year was the action for debauchery brought by an eighteen-year-old plaintiff against the estate of the late Errol Flynn, whose exploits were apparently much more spectacular off the screen than on it. Correctly dismissing the action as one in the nature of heart balm relief, Justice Hofstadter unleashed an invective condemning the current social malaise ... especially virulent in the area of entertainment, catering to sadism and violence and adolescent eroticism, and suggesting that perhaps a remedy of social ostracism may have to be used where legal sanction proves insufficient
HOLLOTRON switch for megawatt lightweight space inverters
The feasibility of satisfying the switching requirements for a megawatt ultralight inverter system using HOLLOTRON switch technology was determined. The existing experimental switch hardware was modified to investigate a coaxial HOLLOTRON switch configuration and the results were compared with those obtained for a modified linear HOLLOTRON configuration. It was concluded that scaling the HOLLOTRON switch to the current and voltage specifications required for a megawatt converter system is indeed feasible using a modified linear configuration. The experimental HOLLOTRON switch operated at parameters comparable to the scaled coaxial HOLLOTRON. However, the linear HOLLOTRON data verified the capability for meeting all the design objectives simultaneously including current density (greater than 2 A/sq cm), voltage (5 kV), switching frequency (20 kHz), switching time (300 ns), and forward voltage drop (less than or equal to 20 V). Scaling relations were determined and a preliminary design was completed for an engineering model linear HOLLOTRON switch to meet the megawatt converter system specifications
Quantized vortices around wavefront nodes, 2
Quantized vortices can occur around nodal points in wavefunctions. The derivation depends only on the wavefunction being single valued, continuous, and having continuous first derivatives. Since the derivation does not depend upon the dynamical equations, the quantized vortices are expected to occur for many types of waves such as electromagnetic and acoustic. Such vortices have appeared in the calculations of the H + H2 molecular collisions and play a role in the chemical kinetics. In a companion paper, it is shown that quantized vortices occur when optical waves are internally reflected from the face of a prism or particle beams are reflected from potential energy barriers
Study of hypersonic propulsion/airframe integration technology
An assessment is done of current and potential ground facilities, and analysis and flight test techniques for establishing a hypersonic propulsion/airframe integration technology base. A mach 6 cruise prototype aircraft incorporating integrated Scramjet engines was considered the baseline configuration, and the assessment focused on the aerodynamic and configuration aspects of the integration technology. The study describes the key technology milestones that must be met to permit a decision on development of a prototype vehicle, and defines risk levels for these milestones. Capabilities and limitations of analysis techniques, current and potential ground test facilities, and flight test techniques are described in terms of the milestones and risk levels
Sky survey at far infrared wavelengths using a balloon-borne telescope
Localized sources of far infrared radiation (approximately 50 microns) have been detected during a high altitude balloon flight with a 40 cm telescope and silicon detectors. The flight system is described and preliminary results are presented. A large area of the sky has been scanned for localized sources of far infrared radiation, using a balloon-borne system that was sensitive to wavelengths beyond about 55 microns. Two Molectron silicon bolometers were used, with a Newtonian telescope having a 40 cm primary. The telescope was driven in azimuth at a fixed elevation; this mode of scanning was carried out for the duration of each of two balloon flights. The flight system is described
The Use of Electron Microscopic Methods for the Characterization of Paints in Forensic Science
Apart from the conventional methods for investigating paints in the forensic science laboratory the electron microscope gives many additional types of information. Since the materials for coating objects are produced in large quantities, a merely chemical analysis of paint does not lead to individual identification. Therefore it is necessary to demonstrate morphological peculiarities, such as e.g., features and defects of fabrication. So the material will have to be evaluated by microanalysis and cathodoluminescence, too. Additionally the pigments and extending materials, especially in primers, can be described by transmission electron microscopy. In that way one can obtain information about the distribution of grain size or the form of single pigment particles. The application of the transmission electron microscope is of special interest to the field of the new pearl lustre pigments
The Columbus Knee System: 4-Year Results of a New Deep Flexion Design Compared to the NexGen Full Flex Implant
The Columbus knee system is designed as a standard knee implant to allow high flexion without additional bone resection. Between August, 2004 and March, 2010 we performed 109 total knee arthroplasties of the Columbus knee system in 101 consecutive patients suffering from primary arthrosis of the knee. Mean age was 72.4 years in women and 70.3 years in men. Mean followup was 47.3 months. The 4-year results of a group of patients who received the NexGen Full Flex implant operated by the same surgeon were used for comparison. Mean total knee score was Columbus: 175.6 and NexGen Flex: 183.4; P = 0.037. Mean operation time was 53 min for Columbus and 66 min for NexGen Flex; P < 0.001. With new streamlined instruments operative time became 60 min for the Columbus; P > 0.05. Radiological assessment showed no signs of loosening for both groups.
Therefore, the Columbus knee system can be recommended for flexion angles up to 140°
Bacterial adherence and hemolysin production from Escherichia coli induces histamine and leukotriene release from various cells
We investigated the role of bacterial adherence and hemolysin production from Escherichia coli parent and genetically cloned strains as to their eft'ects on bistaJidne release from rat mast cells and leukotriene generation from human polymorphonuclear granulocytes. These mediators were involved in the induction of inftammatory disease processes and led, for example, to enhancement of vascular permeability, chemotaxis (leukotriene 84 [LTB4]), chemoaggregation, lysosomal enzyme release, and smooth muscle contraction, (LTC4, LTD4 , and LTE4). Washed bacteria (E. coli K-12 Ms+ my=; E. coli 536 Ms+ MR= my=) as weil as their culture supematants were analyzed. Washed E. coli K-12 (Hiy+), unlike Hly- strains, induced high amounts of histamine release from rat mast cells and chemotactic activity from human polymorphonuclear granulocytes. Significant leukotriene releasewas obtained with washed E. coli K-12 my+ strains and their bacterial culture supematants. Leukotriene induction was dependent on the amount of hemolysin activity present in the supematant. However, additional soluble factors should also be considered. The presence of hemolysin appeared to aceeierate and enhance the rate of phagocytosis of bacteria by neutrophUs. When E. coli 536 (MS+ MR= Hly=) strains were analyzed, the simultaneous presence of MR+ pili and hemolysin production led to an increase in histamine release as compared with MR- my+ strains. The genetically cloned MR+ my+ E. coli 536 strain induced higher amounts of IeukotrieDes as compared with the wUd-type strain. Our data soggest a potent role for adhesins and hemolysin as virulence factors in inducing the release of inftammatory mediators
Salmonella typhimurium strains carrying hemolysin plasmids and cloned hemolysin. genes from Escherichia coli
Like all other Salmonella typhimurium strains examined, the smooth variants SF1397 (L T2) and 1366 and also their semi-rough and rough derivatives are non-haemolytic. Nevertheless, two haemolysin (Hly) plasmids of E. coli belonging to the inc groups incFllI,lv (pSU316) and incIz (pHly152) were able to be introduced into these strains by conjugation and stably maintained. A considerable percentage of the Hly+ transconjugants obtained had lost parts of their O-side chains, a result of selection for the better recipient capability of « semi-rough» variants rather than the direct influence of the Hly+ plasmids themselves. In contrast to the incF1lI1V plasmid pSU316, which exhibited higher conjugation rates with rough recipients, the incIz plasmid pHly152 was accepted best by smooth strains. Transformation with cloned E. coli haemolysin (hly) determinant was inefficient ( <10-8) for smooth strains, but 102-103 times higher for rough recipients, and was increased by the use of Salmonella-modified DNA. The transform ants and transconjugants were relatively stable and showed the same haemolytic activity as the E. coli donor strains. The virulence of the Hly+ smooth, semi-rough and rough S. typhimurium strains was tested in two mouse models, and neither the mortality rate nor the ability to multiply within the mouse spleen was influenced by the hly determinants
