Mechanisms of Auger-induced chemistry derived from wave packet dynamics
To understand how core ionization and subsequent Auger decay lead to bond breaking in large systems, we simulate the wave packet dynamics of electrons in the hydrogenated diamond nanoparticle C_(197)H_(112). We find that surface core ionizations cause emission of carbon fragments and protons through a direct Auger mechanism, whereas deeper core ionizations cause hydrides to be emitted from the surface via remote heating, consistent with results from photon-stimulated desorption experiments [Hoffman A, Laikhtman A, (2006) J Phys Condens Mater 18:S1517–S1546]. This demonstrates that it is feasible to study the chemistry of highly excited large-scale systems using simulation and analysis tools comparable in simplicity to those used for classical molecular dynamics
Time for "justice" : Research to inform the development of a human rights framework for the design and implementation of an "acknowledgement and accountability forum" on historic abuse of children in Scotland
In 2002, Chris Daly raised a petition to the Scottish Executive (PE535) calling for an independent inquiry into the historic abuse of children in Scotland. This led to the setting up of a reference group in 2003, in order to explore the role of a truth and reconciliation process that was identified as an important step in dealing with historic abuse. In 2004, there was an apology for such abuse by the then First Minister, Jack McConnell. In 2005, Tom Shaw led the Historic Abuse Systemic Review. This covered the period 1950 – 1995 and was completed in 2007. In 2006, a sub-group of the reference group that was set up in 2003 identified the need for a service for survivors. This led to the funding of ‘In Care Survivor Scotland’ in 2008, under the umbrella of ‘Open Secret’. It is important to see this current report in this context. Eight years on from the initial petition, it is clear that this process has been seen by many as a long road to acknowledging the need to address outstanding human rights issues in relation to the historic abuse of children in care in Scotland
Non Abelian Sugawara Construction and the q-deformed N=2 Superconformal Algebra
The construction of a q-deformed N=2 superconformal algebra is proposed in
terms of level 1 currents of quantum affine
Lie algebra and a single real Fermi field. In particular, it suggests the
expression for the q-deformed Energy-Momentum tensor in the Sugawara form. Its
constituents generate two isomorphic quadratic algebraic structures. The
generalization to is also proposed.Comment: AMSLATEX, 21page
Teaching in Turbulent Times: Teachers' Perceptions of the Effects of External Factors on Their Professional Lives
Scholars often seek to understand the relationships between various social, economic, political, and cultural events and their impact on the lives of Canadians. As a compulsory social institution the school is an arena where the turbulent external environment has a significant influence. The teacher is the primary contact for children in the school and must deal with the indirect ramifications of societal activity as imported by the students. At the same time the teacher is a member of the wider community and is directly affected by those same events. The effects of such disruptions on the professional lives of teachers who live and work in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, are documented and described in this article.

Measuring Drinking Water Affordability and Sustainability
Access to safe water is necessary for life, but safe water is not always affordable or accessible. The human right to water and the Sustainable Development Goals are landmark social visions for a world where everyone has access to safe and affordable water. These frameworks embed water access in broader aspirations for sustainably managing resources on earth. Metrics play a key role in developing policies and analyzing progress toward water access equity and sustainability. This dissertation contributes to scholarship on water access, economics, and sustainability through developing metrics of household water affordability and greenhouse gas impacts of bottled water. The impacts of unaffordable water can be substantial for economically vulnerable households, who may compromise health and food-related expenses to pay for water and utilities. In a comprehensive and critical review in Chapter 2, I evaluate the state of water affordability research to understand how water affordability should be measured to advance the human right to water and Sustainable Development Goals. In the following chapter, I aim to operationalize metrics for household water affordability in California as part of the state’s first human right to water tracking tool. The research in Chapter 3 offers insight into California’s water affordability challenges through the development of three water affordability indicators, as well as analyses by system size and poverty levels. At the same time, this study underscores the substantial data gaps facing researchers and policymakers aiming to improve water access equity in the U.S.In Chapter 4, I turn to the question of water access sustainability in Mexico, where water access is high, but trust in water quality is low–resulting in the highest per capita consumption of bottled water in the world. I develop a representative metric of greenhouse gas emissions associated with household bottled water use in Mexico using life cycle assessment modeling. To realize sustainable transitions, research into the antagonistic or synergistic interactions among Sustainable Development Goals is required. Achieving water access through the use of bottled water is a prime case study to evaluate such interactions and identify areas for emissions reductions on the pathway to water access for all.The projects in this dissertation enable me to quantify equity and sustainability dimensions of household water access in novel ways, and I explore the scholarship and policy implications of this work in a concluding chapter
