    Compressed Sensing Performance Analysis via Replica Method using Bayesian framework

    Compressive sensing (CS) is a new methodology to capture signals at lower rate than the Nyquist sampling rate when the signals are sparse or sparse in some domain. The performance of CS estimators is analyzed in this paper using tools from statistical mechanics, especially called replica method. This method has been used to analyze communication systems like Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and multiple input multi- ple output (MIMO) systems with large size. Replica analysis, now days rigorously proved, is an efficient tool to analyze large systems in general. Specifically, we analyze the performance of some of the estimators used in CS like LASSO (the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) estimator and Zero-Norm regularizing estimator as a special case of maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator by using Bayesian framework to connect the CS estimators and replica method. We use both replica symmetric (RS) ansatz and one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) ansatz, clamming the latter is efficient when the problem is not convex. This work is more analytical in its form.     Production, purification and characterization of celullase-free xylanase from Aspergillus terreus UL 4209

    Aspergillus terreus, UL 4209 strain, isolated from the soil in South Africa was used to produce an extracellular cellulase-free xylanase in shake flask cultures containing oat spelt and/or birchwoodxylans. Maximum xylanase activity (35 U/ml) was observed after 96 h at 35ÂșC and pH 6 in 1% oat spelt xylan. The xylanase was purified to homogeneity by gel filtration on Sephacryl S-200. This enzyme wasfound to be a single subunit protein of 22 kDa showing optimal activity at 35ÂșC and pH 6. The enzyme retained 95% activity at 35 - 40ÂșC after 4 h incubation at pH 6 and at 50ÂșC the half-life was 5.8 h. Theapparent Km and Vmax values were 3.57 mg/ml and 55.5 mol/min per mg protein, respectively. MALDITOF and LC mass spectroscopy gave 8 peptide ions whose sequence alignments showed that thexylanase produced by this strain has homology with those of other Aspergillus strains such as A. terreus and A. versicolor. These observations showed that our strain produced a low molecular weight,acidophilic, and thermostable xylanase that may be considered for processes operated at moderate temperatures and pH such as preparation of baked cereal food, clarification of fruit juices andsaccharification of agro-residues

    Immunogenicity and efficacy of non-adjuvant tissue culture-based rabies vaccine produced in Ethiopia

    Rabies is 100% fatal, but it is preventable. More than 95% of human rabies cases occur in improperly treated individuals. This is partly due to the fact that modern post-exposure rabies prophylaxis is expensive and therefore not readily available in many endemic regions. Nervous tissue vaccine has been in use for more than 100yrs. These vaccines have now been superseded in purity, potency, immunogenicity and safety. The efficacy and immunogenicity of inactivated tissue culture rabies vaccine, produced in Ethiopia was evaluated. Twelve experimental dogs from local breed were duly conditioned during a quarantine period and assigned to two groups randomly. Animals in group I (cases) were vaccinated subcutaneously with 1 ml of our experimental vaccine. Dogs in group II served as non-vaccinated controls. The immune response of each dog was monitored for 90 days. On the day 90 after final sampling, all dogs were challenged in the masseter muscle with a rabies street virus of canine origin. To evaluate the titer of the rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (VNA), sera were analyzed by Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization (FAVN) Test. Geometric Mean Titers (GMT) to rabies virus was determined at days 7, 15, 21, 30, 60 and 90. Geometric mean titers were equal to 1.59, 1.73, 2.19, 3.58, 3.17 and 3.35 IU/ml respectively. All dogs showed VNA titers higher than the 0.5 IU/ml mandated WHO recommended threshold. All vaccinated dogs, survived the challenge. In contrast, 83.3% of dogs in the control (non-vaccinated group), developed rabies and died.     Covid-19 vaccinations : the unknowns, challenges and hopes

    The entire world has been suffering from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic since March 11, 2020. More than a year later, the COVID‐19 vaccination brought hope to control this viral pandemic. Here, we review the unknowns of the COVID‐19 vaccination, such as its longevity, asymptomatic spread, long‐term side effects, and its efficacy on immunocompromised patients. In addition, we discuss challenges associated with the COVID‐19 vaccination, such as the global access and distribution of vaccine doses, adherence to hygiene guidelines after vaccination, the emergence of novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) variants, and vaccine resistance. Despite all these challenges and the fact that the end of the COVID‐19 pandemic is still unclear, vaccines have brought great hope for the world, with several reports indicating a significant decline in the risk of COVID19‐related infection and hospitalizations.peer-reviewe

    Estimating Human Movement Parameters Using a Software Radio-based Radar

    Radar is an attractive technology for long term monitoring of human movement as it operates remotely, can be placed behind walls and is able to monitor a large area depending on its operating parameters. A radar signal reflected off a moving person carries rich information on his or her activity pattern in the form of a set of Doppler frequency signatures produced by the specific combination of limbs and torso movements. To enable classification and efficient storage and transmission of movement data, unique parameters have to be extracted from the Doppler signatures. Two of the most important human movement parameters for activity identification and classification are the velocity profile and the fundamental cadence frequency of the movement pattern. However, the complicated pattern of limbs and torso movement worsened by multipath propagation in indoor environment poses a challenge for the extraction of these human movement parameters. In this paper, three new approaches for the estimation of human walking velocity profile in indoor environment are proposed and discussed. The first two methods are based on spectrogram estimates whereas the third method is based on phase difference computation. In addition, a method to estimate the fundamental cadence frequency of the gait is suggested and discussed. The accuracy of the methods are evaluated and compared in an indoor experiment using a flexible and low-cost software defined radar platform. The results obtained indicate that the velocity estimation methods are able to estimate the velocity profile of the person’s translational motion with an error of less than 10%.
