Antenna subtraction for gluon scattering at NNLO
We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the double real radiation
infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at
next-to-next-to-leading order. The antenna subtraction framework has been
successfully applied to the calculation of NNLO corrections to the 3-jet cross
section and related event shape distributions in electron-positron
annihilation. Here we consider processes with two coloured particles in the
initial state, and in particular two-jet production at hadron colliders such as
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We construct a subtraction term that describes
the single and double unresolved contributions from the six-gluon tree-level
process using antenna functions with initial state partons and show numerically
that the subtraction term correctly approximates the matrix elements in the

On BCFW shifts of integrands and integrals
In this article a first step is made towards the extension of
Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) tree level on-shell recursion relations to
integrands and integrals of scattering amplitudes to arbitrary loop order.
Surprisingly, it is shown that the large BCFW shift limit of the integrands has
the same structure as the corresponding tree level amplitude in any minimally
coupled Yang-Mills theory in four or more dimensions. This implies that these
integrands can be reconstructed from a subset of their `single cuts'. The main
tool is powercounting Feynman graphs in a special lightcone gauge choice
employed earlier at tree level by Arkani-Hamed and Kaplan. The relation between
shifts of integrands and shifts of its integrals is investigated explicitly at
one loop. Two particular sources of discrepancy between the integral and
integrand are identified related to UV and IR divergences. This is
cross-checked with known results for helicity equal amplitudes at one loop. The
nature of the on-shell residue at each of the single-cut singularities of the
integrand is commented upon. Several natural conjectures and opportunities for

Space-like (vs. time-like) collinear limits in QCD: is factorization violated?
We consider the singular behaviour of QCD scattering amplitudes in
kinematical configurations where two or more momenta of the external partons
become collinear. At the tree level, this behaviour is known to be controlled
by factorization formulae in which the singular collinear factor is universal
(process independent). We show that this strict (process-independent)
factorization is not valid at one-loop and higher-loop orders in the case of
the collinear limit in space-like regions (e.g., collinear radiation from
initial-state partons). We introduce a generalized version of all-order
collinear factorization, in which the space-like singular factors retain some
dependence on the momentum and colour charge of the non-collinear partons. We
present explicit results on one-loop and two-loop amplitudes for both the
two-parton and multiparton collinear limits. At the level of square amplitudes
and, more generally, cross sections in hadron--hadron collisions, the violation
of strict collinear factorization has implications on the non-abelian structure
of logarithmically-enhanced terms in perturbative calculations (starting from
the next-to-next-to-leading order) and on various factorization issues of mass

Single Cut Integration
We present an analytic technique for evaluating single cuts for one-loop
integrands, where exactly one propagator is taken to be on shell. Our method
extends the double-cut integration formalism of one-loop amplitudes to the
single-cut case. We argue that single cuts give meaningful information about
amplitudes when taken at the integrand level. We discuss applications to the

Expression and mutation analysis of the discoidin domain receptors 1 and 2 in non-small cell lung carcinoma
The discoidin domain receptors, (DDR)1 and DDR2, have been linked to numerous human cancers. We sought to determine expression levels of DDRs in human lung cancer, investigate prognostic determinates, and determine the prevalence of recently reported mutations in these receptor tyrosine kinases. Tumour samples from 146 non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) patients were analysed for relative expression of DDR1 and DDR2 using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). An additional 23 matched tumour and normal tissues were tested for differential expression of DDR1 and DDR2, and previously reported somatic mutations. Discoidin domain receptor 1 was found to be significantly upregulated by 2.15-fold (P=0.0005) and DDR2 significantly downregulated to an equivalent extent (P=0.0001) in tumour vs normal lung tissue. Discoidin domain receptor 2 expression was not predictive for patient survival; however, DDR1 expression was significantly associated with overall (hazard ratio (HR) 0.43, 95% CI=0.22–0.83, P=0.014) and disease-free survival (HR=0.56, 95% CI=0.33–0.94, P=0.029). Multivariate analysis revealed DDR1 is an independent favourable predictor for prognosis independent of tumour differentiation, stage, histology, and patient age. However, contrary to previous work, we did not observe DDR mutations. We conclude that whereas altered expression of DDRs may contribute to malignant progression of NSCLC, it is unlikely that this results from mutations in the DDR1 and DDR2 genes that we investigated
Surgery versus Watchful Waiting in Patients with Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia – a Meta-Analysis
Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign bone tumor which most commonly involves the craniofacial skeleton. The most devastating consequence of craniofacial FD (CFD) is loss of vision due to optic nerve compression (ONC). Radiological evidence of ONC is common, however the management of this condition is not well established. Our objective was to compare the long-term outcome of patients with optic nerve compression (ONC) due to craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD) who either underwent surgery or were managed expectantly.We performed a meta-analysis of 27 studies along with analysis of the records of a cohort of patients enrolled in National Institutes of Health (NIH) protocol 98-D-0145, entitled Screening and Natural History of Fibrous Dysplasia, with a diagnosis of CFD. The study group consisted of 241 patients; 122 were enrolled in the NIH study and 119 were extracted from cases published in the literature. The median follow-up period was 54 months (range, 6-228 months). A total of 368 optic nerves were investigated. All clinically impaired optic nerves (n = 86, 23.3%) underwent therapeutic decompression. Of the 282 clinically intact nerves, 41 (15%) were surgically decompressed and 241 (85%) were followed expectantly. Improvement in visual function was reported in fifty-eight (67.4%) of the clinically impaired nerves after surgery. In the intact nerves group, long-term stable vision was achieved in 31/45 (75.6%) of the operated nerves, compared to 229/241 (95.1%) of the non-operated ones (p = 0.0003). Surgery in asymptomatic patients was associated with visual deterioration (RR 4.89; 95% CI 2.26-10.59).Most patients with CFD will remain asymptomatic during long-term follow-up. Expectant management is recommended in asymptomatic patients even in the presence of radiological evidence of ONC
Antenna subtraction at NNLO with hadronic initial states: double real initial-initial configurations
The antenna subtraction method handles real radiation contributions in higher
order corrections to jet observables. The method is based on antenna functions,
which encapsulate all unresolved radiation between a pair of hard radiator
partons. To apply this method to compute hadron collider observables,
initial-initial antenna functions with both radiators in the initial state are
required in unintegrated and integrated forms. In view of extending the antenna
subtraction method to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations at
hadron colliders, we derive the full set of initial-initial double real

Evaluation of Analytical Methods to Study Aquifer Properties with Pumping Tests in Coastal Aquifers with Numerical Modelling (Motril-Salobreña Aquifer)
Two pumping tests were performed in the unconfined Motril-Salobreña detrital
aquifer in a 250 m-deep well 300 m from the coastline containing both freshwater and
saltwater. It is an artesian well as it is in the discharge zone of this coastal aquifer. The two
observation wells where the drawdowns are measured record the influence of tidal fluctuations, and the well lithological columns reveal high vertical heterogeneity in the aquifer. The
Theis and Cooper-Jacob approaches give average transmissivity (T) and storage
coefficient (S) values of 1460 m2
/d and 0.027, respectively. Other analytical solutions,
modified to be more accurate in the boundary conditions found in coastal aquifers,
provide similar T values to those found with the Theis and Cooper-Jacob methods,
but give very different S values or could not estimate them. Numerical modelling in a
synthetic model was applied to analyse the sensitivity of the Theis and Cooper-Jacob
approaches to the usual boundary conditions in coastal aquifers. The T and S values
calculated from the numerical modelling drawdowns indicate that the regional flow,
variable pumping flows, and tidal effect produce an error of under 10 % compared to results
obtained with classic methods. Fluids of different density (freshwater and saltwater) cause an
error of 20 % in estimating T and of over 100 % in calculating S. The factor most affecting T and
S results in the pumping test interpretation is vertical heterogeneity in sediments, which can

Environmental enrichment reduces signs of boredom in caged mink
Animals housed in impoverished cages are often labelled 'bored'. They have also been called 'apathetic' or 'depressed', particularly when profoundly inactive. However, these terms are rarely operationally defined and validated. As a negative state caused by under-stimulation, boredom should increase interest in stimuli of all kinds. Apathy (lack of interest), by contrast, should manifest as decreased interest in all stimuli, while anhedonia (loss of pleasure, a depressive symptom) should specifically decrease interest in normally rewarding stimuli. We tested the hypotheses that mink, a model carnivore, experience more boredom, depression-like apathy, or anhedonia in non-enriched (NE) cages than in complex, enriched (E) cages. We exposed 29 subjects (13 E, 16 NE) to ten stimuli categorized a priori as aversive (e.g. air puffs), rewarding (e.g. evoking chasing) or ambiguous/neutral (e.g. candles). Interest in stimuli was assessed via latencies to contact, contact durations, and durations oriented to stimuli. NE mink contacted all stimuli faster (P = 0.003) than E mink, and spent longer oriented to/in contact with them, albeit only significantly so for ambiguous ones (treatment*type P<0.013). With stimulus category removed from statistical models, interest in all stimuli was consistently higher among NE mink (P<0.0001 for all measures). NE mink also consumed more food rewards (P = 0.037). Finally, we investigated whether lying down while awake and stereotypic behaviour (both increased by NE housing) predicted these responses. Lying awake positively co-varied with certain measures of increased exploration. In contrast, stereotypic 'scrabbling' or locomotion (e.g. pacing) did not. Overall, NE mink showed no evidence of apathy or depression, but instead a heightened investigation of diverse stimuli consistent with boredom. This state was potentially indicated by spending much time lying still but awake (although this result requires replication). Boredom can thus be operationalized and assessed empirically in non-human animals. It can also be reduced by environmental enrichment
