    Cities in American federalism: evidence on state-local government conflict from a survey of mayors

    Previous scholarship on American federalism has largely focused on the national government's increasingly conflictual relationship with the states. While some studies have explored the rise of mandates at the state level, there has been comparatively less attention on state–local relationships. Using a new survey of mayors, we explore variations in local government attitudes towards their state governments. We find some evidence that, regardless of partisanship, mayors in more conservative states are unhappy about state funding and—especially—regulations. More strikingly, we also uncover a partisan mismatch in which Democratic mayors provide especially negative ratings of their state’s funding and—even more strongly—regulations. These findings have important implications for state–local relations as cities continue to become more Democratic and Republicans increasingly dominate state-level contests

    Trends in optometric education concerning developmental vision and visual training

    A questionnaire was sent to 209 optometrists teaching at each of the thirteen U.S. optometry schools. It contained questions pertaining to optometric educators attitudes toward their educational background in developmentel vision and visual training. Questions were designed to solicit opinions on what role developmental vision and visual training play in optometric education today. The professors attitudes and opinions were compared to their year of graduation. Lastly, profile information and data concerning the field of expertise was gathered from each survey recipient

    The Effect of Aortic Valve Replacement on Left Ventricular Function in Patients with Aortic Valvular Disease

    Despite improved surgical techniques and survival in patients following aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis and aortic insufficiency, the proper timing for surgery remains controversial. The incomplete reversibility of left ventricular dysfunction remains a concern, and postoperative improvement of left ventricular function is not consistently demonstrated. We studied 11 patients with aortic stenosis and nine patients with aortic insufficiency using angiographic and radioisotope assessment of left ventricular function preoperatively. Postoperative left ventricular function was assessed over nine to 13 months by radioisotope multiple-gated acquisition (MUGA) scan. All patients with impaired left ventricular function preoperatively showed slow but significant recovery toward a normal left ventricular ejection fraction by nine to 13 months postoperatively. Patients with aortic stenosis or aortic insufficiency and depressed left ventricular function can clearly obtain substantial, albeit delayed, improvement after valve replacement

    PPAR-γ Thiazolidinedione Agonists and Immunotherapy in the Treatment of Brain Tumors

    Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are selective agonists of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma, a transcription factor belonging to the superfamily of nuclear hormone receptors. Although activation of PPARγ by TZDs has been best characterized by its ability to regulate expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism, PPARγ agonists have other physiological effects including modulating pro- and anti-inflammatory gene expression and inducing apoptosis in several cell types including glioma cells and cell lines. Immunotherapeutic approaches to reducing brain tumors are focused on means to reduce the immunosuppressive responses of tumors which dampen the ability of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes to kill tumors. Initial studies from our lab show that combination of an immunotherapeutic strategy with TZD treatment provides synergistic benefit in animals with implanted tumors. The potential of this combined approach for treatment of brain tumors is reviewed in this report

    Many-body Anderson localization in one dimensional systems

    We show, using quasi-exact numerical simulations, that Anderson localization of one-dimensional particles in a disordered potential survives in the presence of attractive interaction between particles. The localization length of the composite particle can be computed analytically for weak disorder and is in good agreement with the quasi-exact numerical observations using Time Evolving Block Decimation. Our approach allows for simulation of the entire experiment including the final measurement of all atom positions.Comment: 12pp, 5 fig, version accepted in NJ

    The Joint European Compound Library:boosting precompetitive research

    The Joint European Compound Library (JECL) is a new high-throughput screening collection aimed at driving precompetitive drug discovery and target validation. The JECL has been established with a core of over 321000 compounds from the proprietary collections of seven pharmaceutical companies and will expand to around 500000 compounds. Here, we analyse the physicochemical profile and chemical diversity of the core collection, showing that the collection is diverse and has a broad spectrum of predicted biological activity. We also describe a model for sharing compound information from multiple proprietary collections, enabling diversity and quality analysis without disclosing structures. The JECL is available for screening at no cost to European academic laboratories and SMEs through the IMI European Lead Factory (http://www.europeanleadfactory.eu/)
