Boundary of Quantum Evolution under Decoherence
Relaxation effects impose fundamental limitations on our ability to
coherently control quantum mechanical phenomena. In this letter, we establish
physical limits on how closely can a quantum mechanical system be steered to a
desired target state in the presence of relaxation. In particular, we
explicitly compute the maximum coherence or polarization that can be
transferred between coupled nuclear spins in the presence of very general
decoherence mechanisms that include cross-correlated relaxation. We give
analytical expressions for the control laws (pulse sequences) which achieve
these physical limits and provide supporting experimental evidence.
Exploitation of cross-correlation effects has recently led to the development
of powerful methods in NMR spectroscopy to study very large biomolecules in
solution. We demonstrate with experiments that the optimal pulse sequences
provide significant gains over these state of the art methods, opening new
avenues for spectroscopy of much larger proteins. Surprisingly, in spite of
very large relaxation rates, optimal control can transfer coherence without any
loss when cross-correlated relaxation rates are tuned to auto-correlated
relaxation rates
Laparoscopic repair of a large interstitially incarcerated inguinal hernia.
A 68 year old female presented for elective repair of an abdominal wall hernia. Preoperative CT imaging revealed a right inguinal hernia defect with hernia contents coursing cephalad between the external and internal abdominal oblique muscles. This was consistent with an interstitial inguinal hernia, a rare entity outside of post- traumatic hernias. At operation the hernia contents were reduced laparoscopically. The hernia was then repaired by transitioning to the totally extraperitoneal (TEP) approach using a 15cm X 15cm piece of polyester mesh. The patient had an uneventful recovery. Interstitial hernias are rare, difficult to diagnose and potentially dangerous if left untreated. There is no consensus on the ideal repair of these unique hernias. This represents a minimally invasive repair of an unusual hernia, with a novel approach to diagnose and manage the hernia and its redundant sac
Offshore rectenna feasbility
A preliminary study of the feasibility and cost of an offshore rectenna to serve the upper metropolitan east coast was performed. A candidate site at which to build a 5 GW rectenna was selected on the basis of proximity to load centers, avoidance of shipping lanes, sea floor terrain, and relocated conditions. Several types of support structures were selected for study based initially on the reference system rectenna concept of a wire mesh ground screen and dipoles each with its own rectifier and filter circuits. Possible secondary uses of an offshore rectenna were examined and are evaluated
Continuous phase-space representations for finite-dimensional quantum states and their tomography
Continuous phase spaces have become a powerful tool for describing,
analyzing, and tomographically reconstructing quantum states in quantum optics
and beyond. A plethora of these phase-space techniques are known, however a
thorough understanding of their relations was still lacking for
finite-dimensional quantum states. We present a unified approach to continuous
phase-space representations which highlights their relations and tomography.
The infinite-dimensional case from quantum optics is then recovered in the
large-spin limit.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, v4: extended tomography analysis, added
