Strong Enhancement of Superconducting Correlation in a Two-Component Fermion Gas
We study high-density electron-hole (e-h) systems with the electron density
slightly larger than the hole density. We find a new superconducting phase, in
which the excess electrons form Cooper pairs moving in an e-h BCS phase. The
coexistence of the e-h and e-e orders is possible because e and h have opposite
charges, whereas analogous phases are impossible in the case of two fermion
species that have the same charge or are neutral. Most strikingly, the e-h
order enhances the superconducting e-h order parameter by more than one order
of magnitude as compared with that given by the BCS formula, for the same value
of the effective e-e attractive potential \lambda^{ee}. This new phase should
be observable in an e-h system created by photoexcitation in doped

The push and pull of network mobility: how those high in trait-level neuroticism can come to occupy peripheral network positions
Field research shows that people’s network positions are determined, at least in part, by their traits. For instance, over time, actors higher in trait-level neuroticism move out to the network periphery. What is unknown is how this happens. Drawing on personality and social psychological theory, we generated a model that could explain the movement of actors who are higher in neuroticism. Our aim is to add to the existing empirical literature on the interplay of actor level traits and social networks, and do so using methods that can establish possible causal pathways. In four experiments, we tested two explanatory mechanisms—aversion on the part of alters and avoidance on the part of focal actors. Results showed that potential alters indeed perceived actors higher in neuroticism as aversive, leading them to block these actors from well-connected spots. Specifically, low perceived levels of likability prevented actors from being nominated to better positions. In a test of avoidance, actors higher in neuroticism recognized the benefits of better-connected network positions, but also saw them as costly, and thus, declined opportunities to occupy them. This work shows how both alters and egos can determine egos’ place in networks, and specifies how this is done
Rocket FUV Observations of the Io Plasma Torus During the Shoemaker-Levy/9 Impacts
We observed the Io torus from 820-1140 A on universal time (UT) 20.25 July 1994 from a sounding rocket telescope/spectrograph. These observations serve as only the fourth published spectrum of the torus in this wavelength range, and the only far ultraviolet (FUV) data documenting the state of the torus during the Shoemaker Levy 9 Impacts
The Discovery of Argon in Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)
On 30.14 March 1997 we observed the EUV spectrum of the bright comet C/1995
O1 (Hale-Bopp) at the time of its perihelion, using our EUVS sounding rocket
telescope/spectrometer. The spectra reveal the presence H Ly beta, O+, and,
most notably, Argon. Modelling of the retrieved Ar production rates indicates
that comet Hale-Bopp is enriched in Ar relative to cosmogonic expectations.
This in turn indicates that Hale-Bopp's deep interior has never been exposed to
the 35-40 K temperatures necessary to deplete the comet's primordial argon

More broadly, this article argues that the role of the prison officer and their training (from 1896) reflect wider ambiguities in prison policy and practice during this period
Jupiter's X-ray and EUV auroras monitored by Chandra, XXM-Newton, and Hisaki satellite
Jupiter's X-ray auroral emission in the polar cap region results from particles which have undergone strong field-aligned acceleration into the ionosphere. The origin of precipitating ions and electrons and the time variability in the X-ray emission are essential to uncover the driving mechanism for the high-energy acceleration. The magnetospheric location of the source field line where the X-ray is generated is likely affected by the solar wind variability. However, these essential characteristics are still unknown because the long-term monitoring of the X-rays and contemporaneous solar wind variability has not been carried out. In April 2014, the first long-term multiwavelength monitoring of Jupiter's X-ray and EUV auroral emissions was made by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM-Newton, and Hisaki satellite. We find that the X-ray count rates are positively correlated with the solar wind velocity and insignificantly with the dynamic pressure. Based on the magnetic field mapping model, a half of the X-ray auroral region was found to be open to the interplanetary space. The other half of the X-ray auroral source region is magnetically connected with the prenoon to postdusk sector in the outermost region of the magnetosphere, where the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability, magnetopause reconnection, and quasiperiodic particle injection potentially take place. We speculate that the high-energy auroral acceleration is associated with the KH instability and/or magnetopause reconnection. This association is expected to also occur in many other space plasma environments such as Saturn and other magnetized rotators
Order parameter of MgB_2: a fully gapped superconductor
We have measured the low-temperature specific heat C(T) for polycrystalline
MgB_2 prepared by high pressure synthesis. C(T) below 10 K vanishes
exponentially, which unambiguously indicates a fully opened superconducting
energy gap. However, this gap is found to be too small to account for Tc of
MgB_2. Together with the small specific heat jump DeltaC/gamma_nTc=1.13,
scenarios like anisotropic s-wave or multi-component order parameter are called
for. The magnetic field dependence of gamma(H) is neither linear for a fully
gapped s-wave superconductor nor H^1/2 for nodal order parameter. It seems that
this intriguing behavior of gamma(H) is associated with the intrinsic

Global distribution of invasive serotype 35D streptococcus pneumoniae isolates following introduction of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine
A newly recognized pneumococcal serotype 35D, which differs from the 35B polysaccharide in structure and serology by not binding to factor serum 35a, was recently reported. The genetic basis for this distinctive serology is due to the presence of an inactivating mutation in wciG, which encodes an O-acetyltransferase responsible for O-acetylation of a galactofuranose. Here, we assessed the genomic data of a worldwide pneumococcal collection to identify serotype 35D isolates and understand their geographical distribution, genetic background and invasiveness potential. Of 21,980 pneumococcal isolates, 444 were originally typed as serotype 35B by PneumoCaT. Analysis of wciGrevealed 23 isolates from carriage (n=4) and disease (n=19) with partial or complete loss-of-funtion mutations, including mutations resulting in pre-mature stop codons (n=22) and an in-frame mutation (n=1). These were selected for further analysis. The putative 35D isolates were geographically widespread and 65.2% (15/23) of them was recovered after PCV13 introduction. Compared with serotype 35B, putative serotype 35D isolates have higher invasive disease potentials based on odds ratio (OR) (11.58; 95% CI, 1.42-94.19 vs 0.61; 95% CI, 0.40-0.92) and a higher prevalence of macrolide resistance mediated by mefA (26.1% vs 7.6%, p=0.009). Using Quellung, 50% (10/20) of viable isolates were serotype 35D, 25% (5/20) serotype 35B, and 25% (5/20) a mixture of 35B/35D. The discrepancy between phenotype and genotype requires further investigation. These findings illustrated a global distribution of an invasive serotype 35D among young children post-PCV13 introduction and underlined the invasive potential conferred by the loss of O-acetylation in the pneumococcal capsule
