Non-Perturbative Renormalisation using Domain Wall Fermions
The viability of the Non-Perturbative Renormalisation (NPR) method of the
Rome/Southampton group is studied, for the first time, in the context of domain
wall fermions. The procedure is used to extract the renormalisation
coefficients of the various quark bilinears, as well as the four-fermion
operators relevant to the effective Hamiltonian. The

Elysia timida (Risso, 1818) three decades of research
Elysia timida (Risso, 1818) three decades of research.— During the last 30 years, studies on Elysia timida (Risso,
1818) have addressed various aspects related to food sources, photosynthetic efficiency of kleptoplasts, population
genetics, chemical ecology and reproductive biology, both in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Mar Menor
coastal lagoon. E. timida shows a strong specific interaction with Acetabularia acetabulum, retaining functional
chloroplasts for at least 45 days and obtaining extra energy in periods when food resources are scarce. It shows
control of parapodia, avoiding pigment photodestruction under oversaturated light conditions. The chemical ecological
relationships established between E. timida and its potential predator fish, Thalassoma pavo, have also
been evaluated, and it has been found that that the extracts of the mollusc contain repellent and unpalatable
polypropionate compounds. Population genetics has demonstrated the genetic divergence between populations
showing high and significant values of FST and genetic distances, and at least six privative alleles that are not
shared with Mediterranean populations have been detected in lagoon populations. This sacoglossan is a poecilogonic
species, and its lagoon populations show a greater reproductive output than Mediterranean populations; they
produce a greater number of egg masses and embyros per individual, and the capsules have a wider diameter
The Receptor-Like Kinase SERK3/BAK1 Is Required for Basal Resistance against the Late Blight Pathogen Phytophthora infestans in Nicotiana benthamiana
BACKGROUND The filamentous oomycete plant pathogen Phytophthora infestans causes late blight, an economically important disease, on members of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), such as the crop plants potato and tomato. The related plant Nicotiana benthamiana is a model system to study plant-pathogen interactions, and the susceptibility of N. benthamiana to Phytophthora species varies from susceptible to resistant. Little is known about the extent to which plant basal immunity, mediated by membrane receptors that recognise conserved pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), contributes to P. infestans resistance. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We found that different species of Phytophthora have varying degrees of virulence on N. benthamiana ranging from avirulence (incompatible interaction) to moderate virulence through to full aggressiveness. The leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK) BAK1/SERK3 is a major modulator of PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI) in Arabidopsis thaliana and N. benthamiana. We cloned two NbSerk3 homologs, NbSerk3A and NbSerk3B, from N. benthamiana based on sequence similarity to the A. thaliana gene. N. benthamiana plants silenced for NbSerk3 showed markedly enhanced susceptibility to P. infestans infection but were not altered in resistance to Phytophthora mirabilis, a sister species of P. infestans that specializes on a different host plant. Furthermore, silencing of NbSerk3 reduced the cell death response triggered by the INF1, a secreted P. infestans protein with features of PAMPs. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE We demonstrated that N. benthamiana NbSERK3 significantly contributes to resistance to P. infestans and regulates the immune responses triggered by the P. infestans PAMP protein INF1. In the future, the identification of novel surface receptors that associate with NbSERK3A and/or NbSERK3B should lead to the identification of new receptors that mediate recognition of oomycete PAMPs, such as INF1.This work was supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, BBSRC, Nuffield Foundation and the German Research Foundation (DFG). Forecasting ocean warming impacts on seabird demography: a case study on the European storm petrel
Bottom-up climatic forcing has been shown to be influential for a variety of marine
taxa, but evidence on seabird populations is scarce. Seasonal variation in environmental conditions
can have an indirect effect on subsequent reproduction, which, given the longevity and
single-brooding of seabirds, may affect population dynamics. Our study focuses on linking the
effect of oceanographic conditions (from 1991 to 2013) to the fecundity and consequently pop -
ulation growth rate of the Mediterranean subspecies of the European storm petrel Hydrobates
pelagicus melitensis. In this study, we examined 23 yr of > 5400 capture–mark−recaptures (CMR)
and modelled the probability of skipping reproduction as a function of oceanographic variables
using CMR models. We demonstrate that a decrease in sea surface temperature in the pre-breeding
period negatively influences skipping propensity, and therefore hypothesize that this behaviour
would have significant influence on population abundance over time. For this reason, we analysed
population growth as a function of skipping probability as affected by oceanographic
conditions. We used stochastic demographic models to forecast the fate of the population, and
evaluated contrasted environmental condition scenarios. As a result, we found that a decrease in
frequency of cold winter events would probably reduce skipping propensity, with a positive effect
on the population as a whole
B-physics computations from Nf=2 tmQCD
We present an accurate lattice QCD computation of the b-quark mass, the B and
Bs decay constants, the B-mixing bag-parameters for the full four-fermion
operator basis, as well as estimates for \xi and f_{Bq}\sqrt{B_q} extrapolated
to the continuum limit and the physical pion mass. We have used Nf = 2
dynamical quark gauge configurations at four values of the lattice spacing
generated by ETMC. Extrapolation in the heavy quark mass from the charm to the
bottom quark region has been carried out using ratios of physical quantities
computed at nearby quark masses, having an exactly known infinite mass limit.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, presented at the 31st International Symposium on

Kaon oscillations in the Standard Model and Beyond using Nf=2 dynamical quarks
We compute non-perturbatively the B-parameters of the complete basis of
four-fermion operators needed to study the Kaon oscillations in the SM and in
its supersymmetric extension. We perform numerical simulations with two
dynamical maximally twisted sea quarks at three values of the lattice spacing
on configurations generated by the ETMC. Unwanted operator mixings and O(a)
discretization effects are removed by discretizing the valence quarks with a
suitable Osterwalder-Seiler variant of the Twisted Mass action. Operators are
renormalized non-perturbatively in the RI/MOM scheme. Our preliminary result

Adverse social determinats and risk for congenital anomalies
INTRODUCCIÓN: Diferentes trabajos han relacionando condiciones sociales adversas a nivel familiar y regional con resultados perinatales (mortalidad neonatal, bajo peso y prematuridad); sin embargo, pocos estudiaron el efecto de la pobreza sobre anomalías congénitas. Objetivo. Evaluar el riesgo de ocurrencia de 25 anomalías congénitas y determinantes sociales adversos según el nivel socioeconómico de la familia y de la región.
POBLACIÓN Y MÉTODOS. Estudio caso-control exploratorio, en el que se utilizaron datos del Estudio Colaborativo Latinoamericano de Malformaciones Congénitas (ECLAMC). La muestra consistió en 3786 recién nacidos vivos con una única malformación y 13 344 controles, seleccionados entre 546 129 nacimientos, ocurridos en 39 hospitales de Argentina durante el período 1992-2001. Se estimaron los riesgos (OR) directos, indirectos (a través de la región de residencia) y la interacción entre el nivel socioeconómico individual y residencial para cada uno de los 25 defectos congénitos.
RESULTADOS: Los defectos labio leporino con/sin paladar hendido (OR= 1,43) y comunicación interventricular (OR= 1,38) mostraron un riesgo significativamente mayor en el nivel socioeconómico más bajo. Los niveles socioeconómicos bajos se asociaron de manera significativa con una mayor frecuencia de consanguinidad parental, ancestros nativos, edad materna menor de 19 años, más de 4 embarazos, bajo número de visitas prenatales y residencia en regiones desfavorables.
CONCLUSIÓN: La fisura labial con o sin paladar hendido y los defectos del tabique interventricular estuvieron asociados significativamente con un nivel socioeconómico más bajo. La falta de planificación familiar, de control prenatal y la exposición a agentes ambientales o teratógenos pueden explicar estos hallazgos.INTRODUCTION: Different studies have related familiar and regional adverse social conditions to perinatal outcome (neonatal mortality, low birth weight and prematurity); however, few studies have studied the effect of poverty on congenital anomalies.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the hazard ratio of 25 congenital anomalies and adverse social determinants as per the socioeconomic level of families and regions.
POPULATION AND METHODS: Exploratory, case-control study using data from the Latin-American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (Estudio Colaborativo Latinoamericano de Malformaciones Congenitas, ECLAMC). The sample consisted of 3786 live newborn infants with a single malformation and 13,344 controls selected among 546,129 births occurred in 39 hospitals from Argentina in the 1992-2001 period. Both direct and indirect (residence) risks (OR) were estimated, together with the interaction between the individual and residential socioeconomic levels for each of the 25 congenital anomalies.
RESULTS: Cleft lip with/without cleft palate (OR= 1.43) and ventricular septal defect (OR= 1.38) showed a significantly higher risk in the lower socioeconomic level. Low socioeconomic levels were significantly associated with a higher frequency of parental sibship (blood relationship); native descent; maternal age younger than 19 years old; more than four pregnancies; a low number of antenatal care visits; and residence in deprived regions.
CONCLUSION: Cleft lip with/without cleft palate and ventricular septal defects were significantly associated with a lower socioeconomic level. Lack of family planning and antenatal care; and exposure to environmental or teratogenic agents may account for these findings.Fil: Pawluk, Mariela Soledad. Recent results from lattice calculations
Recent results from lattice QCD calculations relevant to particle physics
phenomenology are reviewed. They include the calculations of strong coupling
constant, quark masses, kaon matrix elements, and D and B meson matrix
elements. Special emphasis is on the recent progress in the simulations
