    Soft two-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials. II. One-pair and two-pair diagrams

    Two-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials are derived where either one or both nucleons contains a pair vertex. Physically, the meson-pair vertices are meant to describe in an effective way (part of) the effects of heavy-meson exchange and meson-nucleon resonances. {}From the point of view of ``duality,'' these two kinds of contribution are roughly equivalent. The various possibilities for meson pairs coupling to the nucleon are inspired by the chiral-invariant phenomenological Lagrangians that have appeared in the literature. The coupling constants are fixed using the linear σ\sigma model. We show that the inclusion of these two-meson exchanges gives a significant improvement over a potential model including only the standard one-boson exchanges.Comment: 21 pages RevTeX, 7 postscript figures; revised version as to appear in Phys.     Soft two-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials. I. Planar and crossed-box diagrams

    Pion-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials are derived for two nucleons in the intermediate states. The mesons we include are (i) pseudoscalar mesons: π,η,η\pi, \eta, \eta'; (ii) vector mesons: ρ,ω,ϕ\rho, \omega, \phi; (iii) scalar mesons: a0(980),ε(760),f0(975)a_{0}(980), \varepsilon(760), f_{0}(975); and (iv) the J=0J=0 contribution from the Pomeron. Strong dynamical pair suppression is assumed, and at the nucleon-nucleon-meson vertices Gaussian form factors are incorporated into the relativistic two-body framework using a dispersion representation for the pion- and meson-exchange amplitudes. The Fourier transformations are performed using factorization techniques for the energy denominators. The potentials are first calculated in the adiabatic approximation to all planar and crossed three-dimensional momentum-space π\pi-meson diagrams.     Polarization transfer in the 4^{4}He(e,ep3(\vec{e},e' \vec{p}^{3}H reaction

    Polarization transfer in the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at a Q^2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)^2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The results are consistent with a recent fully relativistic calculation which includes a predicted medium modification of the proton form factor based on a quark-meson coupling model.Comment: 5 pages, Latex, 2 postscript figures, submitted to Physics Letters

    Soft-core hyperon-nucleon potentials

    A new Nijmegen soft-core OBE potential model is presented for the low-energy YN interactions. Besides the results for the fit to the scattering data, which largely defines the model, we also present some applications to hypernuclear systems using the G-matrix method. An important innovation with respect to the original soft-core potential is the assignment of the cut-off masses for the baryon-baryon-meson (BBM) vertices in accordance with broken SU(3)F_F, which serves to connect the NN and the YN channels. As a novel feature, we allow for medium strong breaking of the coupling constants, using the 3P0^3P_0 model with a Gell-Mann--Okubo hypercharge breaking for the BBM coupling. We present six hyperon-nucleon potentials which describe the available YN cross section data equally well, but which exhibit some differences on a more detailed level. The differences are constructed such that the models encompass a range of scattering lengths in the ΣN\Sigma N and ΛN\Lambda N channels. For the scalar-meson mixing angle we obtained values θS=37\theta_S=37 to 40 degrees, which points to almost ideal mixing angles for the scalar qqˉq\bar{q} states. The G-matrix results indicate that the remarkably different spin-spin terms of the six potentials appear specifically in the energy spectra of Λ\Lambda hypernuclei.Comment: 37 pages, 4 figure

    Spin-Momentum Correlations in Quasi-Elastic Electron Scattering from Deuterium

    We report on a measurement of spin-momentum correlations in quasi-elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons with an energy of 720 MeV from vector-polarized deuterium. The spin correlation parameter AedVA^V_{ed} was measured for the 2H(e,ep)n^2 \vec{\rm H}(\vec e,e^\prime p)n reaction for missing momenta up to 350 MeV/cc at a four-momentum transfer squared of 0.21 (GeV/c)2^2. The data give detailed information about the spin structure of the deuteron, and are in good agreement with the predictions of microscopic calculations based on realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials and including various spin-dependent reaction mechanism effects. The experiment demonstrates in a most direct manner the effects of the D-state in the deuteron ground-state wave function and shows the importance of isobar configurations for this reaction.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.     Interpolation Formulas for the Eta-Gamma and Eta'-Gamma Transition Form Factors

    The new CLEO and LEP data on the eta-gamma and eta'-gamma transition form factors have renewed the interest in simple interpolation formulas, valid at any value of momentum transfer. We are going to show that recent theoretical and phenomenological results on eta-eta' mixing lead to two-pole forms, where each pole term resembles the Brodsky/Lepage interpolation formula for the pi-gamma case and depends on the mixing and decay parameters in a simple fashion.     Tri-meson-mixing of π\pi-η\eta-η\eta' and ρ\rho-ω\omega-ϕ\phi in the light-cone quark model

    The radiative transition form factors of the pseudoscalar mesons {π\pi, η\eta, η\eta'} and the vector mesons {ρ\rho, ω\omega, ϕ\phi} are restudied with π\pi-η\eta-η\eta' and ρ\rho-ω\omega-ϕ\phi in tri-meson-mixing pattern, which is described by tri-mixing matrices in the light-cone constituent quark model. The experimental transition decay widths are better reproduced with tri-meson-mixing than previous results in a two-mixing-angle scenario of only two-meson η\eta-η\eta' mixing and ω\omega-ϕ\phi mixing.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, final version to appear in EPJ

    Optical Coherence Tomography in Parkinsonian Syndromes

    BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) and the atypical parkinsonian syndromes multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS) are movement disorders associated with degeneration of the central nervous system. Degeneration of the retina has not been systematically compared in these diseases. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with manual segmentation to measure the peripapillar nerve fiber layer, the macular thickness, and the thickness of all retinal layers in foveal scans of 40 patients with PD, 19 with MSA, 10 with CBS, 15 with PSP, and 35 age- and sex-matched controls. RESULTS: The mean paramacular thickness and volume were reduced in PSP while the mean RNFL did not differ significantly between groups. In PSP patients, the complex of retinal ganglion cell- and inner plexiform layer and the outer nuclear layer was reduced. In PD, the inner nuclear layer was thicker than in controls, MSA and PSP. Using the ratio between the outer nuclear layer and the outer plexiform layer with a cut-off at 3.1 and the additional constraint that the inner nuclear layer be under 46 µm, we were able to differentiate PSP from PD in our patient sample with a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 70%. CONCLUSION: Different parkinsonian syndromes are associated with distinct changes in retinal morphology. These findings may serve to facilitate the differential diagnosis of parkinsonian syndromes and give insight into the degenerative processes of patients with atypical parkinsonian syndromes
