Resolving Land Disputes in East Asia: Exploring the Limits of Law
Land disputes are increasing in East Asia as economic and demographic growth intensifies the demand for farmland and urban spaces. Nowhere is this more evident than in China and Vietnam. Reforms that brought Socialist Asia into the globalized economy and returned private property have also sparked intense competition between farmers and residents with outsiders, such as private developers and government agencies. From a legal perspective, the proliferation of land disputes is puzzling, because it is occurring at the same time as governments in China and Vietnam are clarifying property rights and improving formal dispute resolution institutions, such as the courts. Rather than promoting uniformity, order, and predictability, this paper shows that law reforms have produced mixed results. Land claims and property rights often conflict, producing unpredictable and multi-layered dispute resolution processes. Highly ambiguous and contested patterns of land access persist in these countries. Consequently, courts and administrative agencies such as grand mediation struggle to use property rights to find lasting solutions to land disputes. Molecular Clock on a Neutral Network
The number of fixed mutations accumulated in an evolving population often
displays a variance that is significantly larger than the mean (the
overdispersed molecular clock). By examining a generic evolutionary process on
a neutral network of high-fitness genotypes, we establish a formalism for
computing all cumulants of the full probability distribution of accumulated
mutations in terms of graph properties of the neutral network, and use the
formalism to prove overdispersion of the molecular clock. We further show that
significant overdispersion arises naturally in evolution when the neutral
network is highly sparse, exhibits large global fluctuations in neutrality, and
small local fluctuations in neutrality. The results are also relevant for
elucidating the topological structure of a neutral network from empirical
measurements of the substitution process.Comment: 10 page
Number of adaptive steps to a local fitness peak
We consider a population of genotype sequences evolving on a rugged fitness
landscape with many local fitness peaks. The population walks uphill until it
encounters a local fitness maximum. We find that the statistical properties of
the walk length depend on whether the underlying fitness distribution has a
finite mean. If the mean is finite, all the walk length cumulants grow with the
sequence length but approach a constant otherwise. Experimental implications of
our analytical results are also discussed
Stronger computational modelling of signalling pathways using both continuous and discrete-state methods
Starting from a biochemical signalling pathway model expresses in a process algebra enriched with quantitative information, we automatically derive both continuous-space and discrete-space representations suitable for numerical evaluation. We compare results obtained using approximate stochastic simulation thereby exposing a flaw in the use of the differentiation procedure producing misleading results
Markov chain aggregation and its application to rule-based modelling
Rule-based modelling allows to represent molecular interactions in a compact
and natural way. The underlying molecular dynamics, by the laws of stochastic
chemical kinetics, behaves as a continuous-time Markov chain. However, this
Markov chain enumerates all possible reaction mixtures, rendering the analysis
of the chain computationally demanding and often prohibitive in practice. We
here describe how it is possible to efficiently find a smaller, aggregate
chain, which preserves certain properties of the original one. Formal methods
and lumpability notions are used to define algorithms for automated and
efficient construction of such smaller chains (without ever constructing the
original ones). We here illustrate the method on an example and we discuss the
applicability of the method in the context of modelling large signalling
pathways
Calibrating AIS images using the surface as a reference
A method of evaluating the initial assumptions and uncertainties of the physical connection between Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) image data and laboratory/field spectrometer data was tested. The Tuscon AIS-2 image connects to lab reference spectra by an alignment to the image spectral endmembers through a system gain and offset for each band. Images were calibrated to reflectance so as to transform the image into a measure that is independent of the solar radiant flux. This transformation also makes the image spectra directly comparable to data from lab and field spectrometers. A method was tested for calibrating AIS images using the surface as a reference. The surface heterogeneity is defined by lab/field spectral measurements. It was found that the Tuscon AIS-2 image is consistent with each of the initial hypotheses: (1) that the AIS-2 instrument calibration is nearly linear; (2) the spectral variance is caused by sub-pixel mixtures of spectrally distinct materials and shade, and (3) that sub-pixel mixtures can be treated as linear mixtures of pure endmembers. It was also found that the image can be characterized by relatively few endmembers using the AIS-2 spectra
Replicators in Fine-grained Environment: Adaptation and Polymorphism
Selection in a time-periodic environment is modeled via the two-player
replicator dynamics. For sufficiently fast environmental changes, this is
reduced to a multi-player replicator dynamics in a constant environment. The
two-player terms correspond to the time-averaged payoffs, while the three and
four-player terms arise from the adaptation of the morphs to their varying
environment. Such multi-player (adaptive) terms can induce a stable
polymorphism. The establishment of the polymorphism in partnership games
[genetic selection] is accompanied by decreasing mean fitness of the

The Indian family on UK reality television: Convivial culture in salient contexts

The final published article is available from the link below, copyright 2012 @ the author.This article demonstrates how The Family (2009), a fly-on-the wall UK reality series about a British Indian family, facilitates both current public service broadcasting requirements and mass audience appeal. From a critical cultural studies perspective, the author examines the journalistic and viewer responses to the series where authenticity, universality, and comedy emerge as major themes. Textual analysis of the racialized screen representations also helps locate the series within the contexts of contested multiculturalism, genre developments in reality television and public service broadcasting. Paul Gilroy’s concept of convivial culture is used as a frame in understanding how meanings of the series are produced within a South Asian popular representational space. The author suggests that the social comedy taxonomy is a prerequisite for the making of this particular observational documentary. Further, the popular (comedic) mode of conviviality on which the series depends is both expedient and necessary within the various sociopolitical contexts outlined
Lack of self-averaging in neutral evolution of proteins
We simulate neutral evolution of proteins imposing conservation of the
thermodynamic stability of the native state in the framework of an effective
model of folding thermodynamics. This procedure generates evolutionary
trajectories in sequence space which share two universal features for all of
the examined proteins. First, the number of neutral mutations fluctuates
broadly from one sequence to another, leading to a non-Poissonian substitution
process. Second, the number of neutral mutations displays strong correlations
along the trajectory, thus causing the breakdown of self-averaging of the
