    The optical counterpart of SAX J1808.4-3658, the transient bursting millisecond X-ray pulsar

    A set of CCD images have been obtained during the decline of the X-ray transient SAX J1808.4-3658 during April-June 1998. The optical counterpart has been confirmed by several pieces of evidence. The optical flux shows a modulation on several nights which is consistent with the established X-ray binary orbit period of 2 hours. This optical variability is roughly in antiphase with the weak X-ray modulation. The source mean magnitude of V=16.7 on April 18 declined rapidly after April 22. From May 2 onwards the magnitude was more constant at around V=18.45 but by June 27 was below our sensitivity limit. The optical decline precedes the rapid second phase of the X-ray decrease by 3 +/- 1 days. The source has been identified on a 1974 UK Schmidt plate at an estimated magnitude of ~20.     Liver transplantation in biliary atresia with concomitant hepatoma.

    Two cases are reported in which the very infrequently reported association was found of liver cell carcinoma and biliary cirrhosis secondary to congenital biliary atresia. A search of the literature revealed 4 previous reports of cases with similar pathology. Our 2 patients were both operated upon within the first few months of life, at which time congenital biliary atresia was documented, and in 1 instance temporarily corrected. They ran a progressive downhill course until they both received replacement livers, one at 4 years of age and the other at 12, at which times hepatoma was found in the excised cirrhotic livers. One patient is in good health 18 months post-transplantation. The other developed metastases but died of gastro-intestinal bleeding and pneumonia 76 days post-transplantation

    Implementation of structural response sensitivity calculations in a large-scale finite-element analysis system

    The implementation includes a generalized method for specifying element cross-sectional dimensions as design variables that can be used in analytically calculating derivatives of output quantities from static stress, vibration, and buckling analyses for both membrane and bending elements. Limited sample results for static displacements and stresses are presented to indicate the advantages of analytically calclating response derivatives compared to finite difference methods. Continuing developments to implement these procedures into an enhanced version of the system are also discussed

    Accretion column eclipses in the X-ray pulsars GX 1+4 and RX J0812.4-3114

    Sharp dips observed in the pulse profiles of three X-ray pulsars (GX 1+4, RX J0812.4-3114 and A 0535+26) have previously been suggested to arise from partial eclipses of the emission region by the accretion column occurring once each rotation period. We present pulse-phase spectroscopy from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite observations of GX 1+4 and RX J0812.4-3114 which for the first time confirms this interpretation. The dip phase corresponds to the closest approach of the column axis to the line of sight, and the additional optical depth for photons escaping from the column in this direction gives rise to both the decrease in flux and increase in the fitted optical depth measured at this phase. Analysis of the arrival time of individual dips in GX~1+4 provides the first measurement of azimuthal wandering of a neutron star accretion column. The column longitude varies stochastically with standard deviation 2-6 degrees depending on the source luminosity. Measurements of the phase width of the dip both from mean pulse profiles and individual eclipses demonstrates that the dip width is proportional to the flux. The variation is consistent with that expected if the azimuthal extent of the accretion column depends only upon the Keplerian velocity at the inner disc radius, which varies as a consequence of the accretion rate Mdot.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS.     Quantifying the Effect of Non-Larmor Motion of Electrons on the Pressure Tensor

    In space plasma, various effects of magnetic reconnection and turbulence cause the electron motion to significantly deviate from their Larmor orbits. Collectively these orbits affect the electron velocity distribution function and lead to the appearance of the "non-gyrotropic" elements in the pressure tensor. Quantification of this effect has important applications in space and laboratory plasma, one of which is tracing the electron diffusion region (EDR) of magnetic reconnection in space observations. Three different measures of agyrotropy of pressure tensor have previously been proposed, namely, A∅eA\varnothing_e, DngD_{ng} and QQ. The multitude of contradictory measures has caused confusion within the community. We revisit the problem by considering the basic properties an agyrotropy measure should have. We show that A∅eA\varnothing_e, DngD_{ng} and QQ are all defined based on the sum of the principle minors (i.e. the rotation invariant I2I_2) of the pressure tensor. We discuss in detail the problems of I2I_2-based measures and explain why they may produce ambiguous and biased results. We introduce a new measure AGAG constructed based on the determinant of the pressure tensor (i.e. the rotation invariant I3I_3) which does not suffer from the problems of I2I_2-based measures. We compare AGAG with other measures in 2 and 3-dimension particle-in-cell magnetic reconnection simulations, and show that AGAG can effectively trace the EDR of reconnection in both Harris and force-free current sheets. On the other hand, A∅eA\varnothing_e does not show prominent peaks in the EDR and part of the separatrix in the force-free reconnection simulations, demonstrating that A∅eA\varnothing_e does not measure all the non-gyrotropic effects in this case, and is not suitable for studying magnetic reconnection in more general situations other than Harris sheet reconnection.Comment: accepted by Phys. of Plasm

    Spectral variation in the X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 during a low-flux episode

    The X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 was observed with the RXTE satellite for a total of 51ks between 1996 July 19 - 21. During this period the flux decreased smoothly from an initial mean level of ~ 6 X 10^36 erg/s to a minimum of ~ 4 X 10^35 erg/s (2-60 keV, assuming a source distance of 10 kpc) before partially recovering towards the initial level at the end of the observation. BATSE pulse timing measurements indicate that a torque reversal took place approximately 10 d after this observation. Both the mean pulse profile and the photon spectrum varied significantly. The observed variation in the source may provide important clues as to the mechanism of torque reversals. The single best-fitting spectral model was based on a component originating from thermal photons with kT ~ 1 keV Comptonised by a plasma of temperature kT \~ 7 keV. Both the flux modulation with phase during the brightest interval and the evolution of the mean spectra over the course of the observation are consistent with variations in this model component; with, in addition, a doubling of the column density nH contributing to the mean spectral change. A strong flare of duration 50 s was observed during the interval of minimum flux, with the peak flux ~ 20 times the mean level. Although beaming effects are likely to mask the true variation in Mdot thought to give rise to the flare, the timing of a modest increase in flux prior to the flare is consistent with dual episodes of accretion resulting from successive orbits of a locally dense patch of matter in the accretion disc.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted to MNRA

    A High Stability Optical Shadow Sensor with Applications for Precision Accelerometers

    Gravimeters are devices which measure changes in the value of the gravitational acceleration, \textit{g}. This information is used to infer changes in density under the ground allowing the detection of subsurface voids; mineral, oil and gas reserves; and even the detection of the precursors of volcanic eruptions. A micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) gravimeter has been fabricated completely in silicon allowing the possibility of cost e-effective, lightweight and small gravimeters. To obtain a measurement of gravity, a highly stable displacement measurement of the MEMS is required. This requires the development of a portable electronics system that has a displacement sensitivity of ≤2.5\leq 2.5 nm over a period of a day or more. The portable electronics system presented here has a displacement sensitivity ≤10\leq 10 nm/Hz/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}} (≤0.6\leq 0.6 nm at 10001000 s). The battery power system used a modulated LED for measurements and required temperature control of the system to ±\pm 2 mK, monitoring of the tilt to ±\pm 2 μ\muradians, the storage of measured data and the transmission of the data to an external server.Comment: 8 Pages, 12 figures, 5 equations, currently submitted and under review at IEEE Sensors SIE

    Body Image concerns of Male Rugby Players, with specific focus on Muscularity and Body Fat

    Introduction: Despite the high numbers of participants in both rugby league and union, literature on body image of male rugby players is somewhat limited. However researchers have theorized that the exercise adopted by males may reflect different levels of dissatisfaction, especially in activities that require a large body build, or lean aesthetic physique [1]. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the prevalence of body (dis)satisfaction in terms of muscularity and body fat, and secondly to identify areas of the body that require a change (in either increase/decrease in musculature or body fat) to improve body image. Method: A volunteer sample of n = 93 male University Rugby Union and League participants between the ages 18 – 25 years of age were targeted via social media. An online survey was taken using a mixture of multiple choice and Likert scaled questions from an adaptation of the Bodybuilders Image Grid (BIG-O) [2]. Participants identified areas for increased muscularity and areas of the body for body fat changes and statistical analyses used to assess the difference between current and ideal body size. Results: Participants were mostly dissatisfied (49.46%) with their current body image. All participants highlighted at least one muscle group for increased muscularity. 88.44% of participants desired no increase in body fat, whilst 86.41% wished to reduce body fat in at least one area. Pectorals (50.52%), quadriceps (43.01%) and abdominals (34.41%) were the most common areas for increased muscle mass. Main areas targeted for reduced body fat were stomach (86.02%), chest (39.78%) and back (24.73%). Conclusion: Although body image is complex and easily influenced, the majority of participant’s were dissatisfied with their body and desired a reduction in body fat levels and increased muscularity. Recommendations would allow researchers to compare body (dis)satisfaction between those with a performance focus and those focused on societies ideal.
