Tapered Fluidized Beds and the Role of Fluidization in Mineral Emplacement
One of the most prominent features of fluidized beds is their ability to mix and segregate. This is of great importance for many industrial processes, but takes on a particular significance for mineral extraction where a small amount of valuable matter is mixed with a large amount of waste. In this study we consider the occurrence of diamonds in the volcanic rock called âkimberliteâ. These are often emplaced (erupted and deposited) in large volcanic pipes commonly referred to as âdiatremesâ (length scale of the order of a kilometre) with a vent at the bottom through which the minerals were introduced along with other fragmental particulate matter and a gas flow. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the processes that led to the dispersal of minerals before their emplacement to allow efficient extraction. The paper describes experimental observations of a tapered fluidized bed. The objective was to identify the physical behaviour of gas and particles; so, of particular interest are the extent to which fluidization takes place within the bed, and the arrangements of particles seen. Gas flow-rate, particle size, and degree of taper were all varied. These observations can be used to identify the structures and processes that can take place; it is then possible to understand field data in terms of the physics that led to the emplacement of material. This will be shown using new data taken from southern Africa. Scale-up of evidence is of obvious difficulty in this system and this is discussed in terms of the possible behaviour of the bubbles that have generated mixing of material before emplacement
Diatoms and their microbiomes in complex and changing polar oceans
Diatoms, a key group of polar marine microbes, support highly productive ocean ecosystems. Like all life on earth, diatoms do not live in isolation, and they are therefore under constant biotic and abiotic pressures which directly influence their evolution through natural selection. Despite their importance in polar ecosystems, polar diatoms are understudied compared to temperate species. The observed rapid change in the polar climate, especially warming, has created increased research interest to discover the underlying causes and potential consequences on single species to entire ecosystems. Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies have greatly expanded our knowledge by revealing the molecular underpinnings of physiological adaptations to polar environmental conditions. Their genomes, transcriptomes, and proteomes together with the first eukaryotic meta-omics data of surface ocean polar microbiomes reflect the environmental pressures through adaptive responses such as the expansion of protein families over time as a consequence of selection. Polar regions and their microbiomes are inherently connected to climate cycles and their feedback loops. An integrated understanding built on âomicsâ resources centered around diatoms as key primary producers will enable us to reveal unifying concepts of microbial co-evolution and adaptation in polar oceans. This knowledge, which aims to relate past environmental changes to specific adaptations, will be required to improve climate prediction models for polar ecosystems because it provides a unifying framework of how interacting and co-evolving biological communities might respond to future environmental change
The Wadi Faynan Project, Southern Jordan: a Preliminary Report on Geomorphology and Landscape Archaeology

This report describes the preliminary findings of an initial campaign of fieldwork in geomorphology and landscape archaeology conducted by an inter-disciplinary team in 1996. A preliminary sequence of fluvial events has been established, represented by the Ghuwayr and Shayqar Beds dated to the Late Pleistocene, and the Faynan and Dana Beds dated to the Holocene. Methodologies have been trialed for recording, dating and interpreting the ancient field system assumed to be of Nabataean, Roman and Byzantine date; initial findings confirm its longevity of use and complexity of purpose. A molecular biology and phase II trial of lapatinib in children with refractory CNS malignancies: a pediatric brain tumor consortium study.
High expression of ERBB2 has been reported in medulloblastoma and ependymoma; EGFR is amplified and over-expressed in brainstem glioma suggesting these proteins as potential therapeutic targets. We conducted a molecular biology (MB) and phase II study to estimate inhibition of tumor ERBB signaling and sustained responses by lapatinib in children with recurrent CNS malignancies. In the MB study, patients with recurrent medulloblastoma, ependymoma, and high-grade glioma (HGG) undergoing resection were stratified and randomized to pre-resection treatment with lapatinib 900 mg/m(2) dose bid for 7-14 days or no treatment. Western blot analysis of ERBB expression and pathway activity in fresh tumor obtained at surgery estimated ERBB receptor signaling inhibition in vivo. Drug concentration was simultaneously assessed in tumor and plasma. In the phase II study, patients, stratified by histology, received lapatinib continuously, to assess sustained response. Eight patients, on the MB trial (four medulloblastomas, four ependymomas), received a median of two courses (range 1-6+). No intratumoral target inhibition by lapatinib was noted in any patient. Tumor-to-plasma ratios of lapatinib were 10-20 %. In the 34 patients (14 MB, 10 HGG, 10 ependymoma) in the phase II study, lapatinib was well-tolerated at 900 mg/m(2) dose bid. The median number of courses in the phase II trial was two (range 1-12). Seven patients (three medulloblastoma, four ependymoma) remained on therapy for at least four courses range (4-26). Lapatinib was well-tolerated in children with recurrent or CNS malignancies, but did not inhibit target in tumor and had little single agent activity.Fil: Fouladi, Maryam. A Behavioral Test of Accepting Benefits that Cost Others: Associations with Conduct Problems and Callous-Unemotionality
Background: Youth with conduct problems (CP) often make decisions which value self-interest over the interests of others. Self-benefiting behavior despite loss to others is especially common among youth with CP and callous-unemotional traits (CU). Such behavioral tendencies are generally measured using self- or observer-report. We are unaware of attempts to measure this tendency with a behavioral paradigm. Methods/Principal Findings: In our AlAnâs (altruism-antisocial) game a computer program presents subjects with a series of offers in which they will receive money but a planned actual charity donation will be reduced; subjects decide to accept or reject each offer. We tested (1) whether adolescent patients with CP (n = 20) compared with adolescent controls (n = 19) differed on AlAnâs game outcomes, (2) whether youths with CP and CU differed significantly from controls without CP or CU, and (3) whether AlAnâs game outcomes correlated significantly with CP and separately, CU severity. Patients with CP and CU compared with controls without these problems took significantly more money for themselves and left significantly less money in the charity donation; AlAnâs game outcomes were significantly correlated with CU, but not CP. Conclusions/Significance: In the AlAnâs game adolescents with conduct problems and CU traits, compared with controls without CP/CU, are disposed to benefit themselves while costing others even in a novel situation, devoid of peer influences, where anonymity is assured, reciprocity or retribution are impossible, intoxication is absent and when the ââotherâ â to b
cIMPACTâNOW update 7: advancing the molecular classification of ependymal tumors
Advances in our understanding of the biological basis and molecular characteristics of ependymal tumors since the latest iteration of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of CNS tumors (2016) have prompted the cIMPACTâNOW group to recommend a new classification. Separation of ependymal tumors by anatomic site is an important principle of the new classification and was prompted by methylome profiling data to indicate that molecular groups of ependymal tumors in the posterior fossa and supratentorial and spinal compartments are distinct. Common recurrent genetic or epigenetic alterations found in tumors belonging to the main molecular groups have been used to define tumor types at intracranial sites; C11orf95 and YAP1 fusion genes for supratentorial tumors and two types of posterior fossa ependymoma defined by methylation group, PFA and PFB. A recently described type of aggressive spinal ependymoma with MYCN amplification has also been included. Myxopapillary ependymoma and subependymoma have been retained as histopathologically defined tumor types, but the classification has dropped the distinction between classic and anaplastic ependymoma. Multi-organ Mapping of Cancer Risk.
Cancers are distributed unevenly across the body, but the importance of cell intrinsic factors such as stem cell function in determining organ cancer risk is unknown. Therefore, we used Cre-recombination of conditional lineage tracing, oncogene, and tumor suppressor alleles to define populations of stem and non-stem cells in mouse organs and test their life-long susceptibility to tumorigenesis. We show that tumor incidence is determined by the life-long generative capacity of mutated cells. This relationship held true in the presence of multiple genotypes and regardless of developmental stage, strongly supporting the notion that stem cells dictate organ cancer risk. Using the liver as a model system, we further show that damage-induced activation of stem cell function markedly increases cancer risk. Therefore, we propose that a combination of stem cell mutagenesis and extrinsic factors that enhance the proliferation of these cell populations, creates a "perfect storm" that ultimately determines organ cancer risk. Economic analysis of the health impacts of housing improvement studies: a systematic review
Background: Economic evaluation of public policies
has been advocated but rarely performed. Studies from a
systematic review of the health impacts of housing
improvement included data on costs and some economic
analysis. Examination of these data provides an
opportunity to explore the difïŹculties and the potential
for economic evaluation of housing.
Methods: Data were extracted from all studies included
in the systematic review of housing improvement which
had reported costs and economic analysis (n=29/45).
The reported data were assessed for their suitability to
economic evaluation. Where an economic analysis was
reported the analysis was described according to pre-set
deïŹnitions of various types of economic analysis used in
the ïŹeld of health economics.
Results: 25 studies reported cost data on the
intervention and/or beneïŹts to the recipients. Of these,
11 studies reported data which was considered
amenable to economic evaluation. A further four studies
reported conducting an economic evaluation. Three of
these studies presented a hybrid âbalance sheetâ
approach and indicated a net economic beneïŹt
associated with the intervention. One cost-effectiveness
evaluation was identiïŹed but the data were unclearly
reported; the cost-effectiveness plane suggested that the
intervention was more costly and less effective than the
status quo.
Conclusions: Future studies planning an economic
evaluation need to (i) make best use of available data
and (ii) ensure that all relevant data are collected. To
facilitate this, economic evaluations should be planned
alongside the intervention with input from health
economists from the outset of the study. When
undertaken appropriately, economic evaluation provides
the potential to make signiïŹcant contributions to
housing policy
