An Empirical Connection between the UV Color of Early Type Galaxies and the Stellar Initial Mass Function
Using new UV magnitudes for a sample of early-type galaxies, ETGs, with
published stellar mass-to-light ratios, Upsilon_*, we find a correlation
between UV color and Upsilon_* that is tighter than those previously identified
between Upsilon_* and either the central stellar velocity dispersion,
metallicity, or alpha enhancement. The sense of the correlation is that
galaxies with larger Upsilon_* are bluer in the UV. We conjecture that
differences in the lower mass end of the stellar initial mass function, IMF,
are related to the nature of the extreme horizontal branch populations that are
generally responsible for the UV flux in ETGs. If so, then UV color can be used
to identify ETGs with particular IMF properties and to estimate Upsilon_*.Comment: Submitted for publication in ApJ Letter
The gaseous extent of galaxies and the origin of Lyman alpha absorption systems. IV: Lyman alpha absorbers arising in a galaxy group
We present new GHRS observations of Lyman alpha absorption lines associated
with a group of galaxies towards the QSO 1545+2101. We have identified eight
distinct Lyman alpha absorption features in the spectrum of QSO 1545+2101 at a
mean redshift of z=0.2648 with a velocity dispersion of 163 km/s. A group of
galaxies is detected in the vicinity of this QSO at a mean redshift of z=0.2645
and velocity dispersion 239 km/s.
The identification of discrete absorption systems indicates that they arise
in clouds of neutral hydrogen rather than in a diffuse intragroup medium. Our
analysis suggests that the Lyman alpha absorption lines are associated with
individual galaxies in the group, although a one-to-one relationship between
absorbers and galaxies is difficult to establish in such a dense environment.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
Local Polynomial Fitting and Spatial Price Relationships: Price Transmission in the EU Markets for Pigmeat
We apply nonparametric methods to assess price transmission processes within the EU pig markets. We compare results derived from nonparametric regressions with those obtained using alternative nonlinear threshold models. Results show that nonparametric regressions support the parametric results. Quantum dynamics of thermalizing systems
We introduce a method "DMT" for approximating density operators of 1D systems
that, when combined with a standard framework for time evolution (TEBD), makes
possible simulation of the dynamics of strongly thermalizing systems to
arbitrary times. We demonstrate that the method performs well for both
near-equilibrium initial states (Gibbs states with spatially varying
temperatures) and far-from-equilibrium initial states, including quenches
across phase transitions and pure states
Estimating single molecule conductance from spontaneous evolution of a molecular contact
We present an original method to estimate the conductivity of a single
molecule anchored to nanometric-sized metallic electrodes, using a Mechanically
Controlled Break Junction (MCBJ) operated at room temperature in liquid. We
record the conductance through the metal / molecules / metal nanocontact while
keeping the metallic electrodes at a fixed distance. Taking advantage of
thermal diffusion and electromigration, we let the contact naturally explore
the more stable configurations around a chosen conductance value. The
conductance of a single molecule is estimated from a statistical analysis of
raw conductance and conductance standard deviation data for molecular contacts
containing up to 14 molecules. The single molecule conductance values are
interpreted as time-averaged conductance of an ensemble of conformers at

Binarity in Cool Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars: A Galex Search for Ultraviolet Excesse
The search for binarity in AGB stars is of critical importance for our
understanding of how planetary nebulae acquire the dazzling variety of
aspherical shapes which characterises this class. However, detecting binary
companions in such stars has been severely hampered due to their extreme
luminosities and pulsations. We have carried out a small imaging survey of AGB
stars in ultraviolet light (using GALEX) where these cool objects are very
faint, in order to search for hotter companions. We report the discovery of
significant far-ultraviolet excesses towards nine of these stars. The
far-ultraviolet excess most likely results either directly from the presence of
a hot binary companion, or indirectly from a hot accretion disk around the
