Pion Charge Exchange on Deuterium
We investigate quantum corrections to a classical intranuclear cascade
simulation of pion single charge exchange on the deuteron. In order to separate
various effects the orders of scattering need to be distinguished and, to that
end, we develop signals for each order of scattering corresponding to
quasi-free conditions. Quantum corrections are evaluated for double scattering
and are found to be large. Global agreement with the data is good.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure
H2S paper strip method - A bacteriological test for faecal coliforms in drinking water at various temperatures
Epidemics arising from waterborne diseases are a global health problem. Faecal contamination of drinking water is the main cause of these outbreaks. According to WHO (1996) for drinking water to be safe, a 100 ml sample should not contain any coliform bacteria. The standard methods currently used for routine testing have many limitations especially when applied in remote areas. The H2S method has been developed as an on-site, inexpensive and easy to use method to test drinking water for remote and rural areas. The present work analyses the reliability of the H2S method for detecting faecal contamination in drinking water. The minimum level of faecal coliforms that could be detected and the incubation period required at various levels of contamination were studied. The range of temperatures at which the method was effective and the incubation period required at various temperatures were also determined. The H2S method was found to be able to detect contamination down to a level of 1 CFU/100 ml of coliform bacteria. Although the H2S method could be used at a temperature range of 20 to 44oC, temperatures between 28 to 37oC gave faster results. An incubation period of only 24 hours was required at 37oC, which was found to be the most suitable incubation temperature. The incubation period increased with a decrease or increase in temperature
Monte Carlo simulation of baryon and lepton number violating processes at high energies
We report results obtained with the first complete event generator for
electroweak baryon and lepton number violating interactions at supercolliders.
We find that baryon number violation would be very difficult to establish, but
lepton number violation can be seen provided at least a few hundred L violating
events are available with good electron or muon identification in the energy

Method and apparatus for minimizing multiple degree of freedom vibration transmission between two regions of a structure
Arrays of actuators are affixed to structural elements to impede the transmission of vibrational energy. A single pair is used to provide control of bending and extensional waves and two pairs are used to control torsional motion. The arrays are applied to a wide variety of structural elements such as a beam structure that is part of a larger framework that may or may not support a rigid or non-rigid skin. Electrical excitation is applied to the actuators that generate forces on the structure. These electrical inputs may be adjusted in their amplitude and phase by a controller in communication with appropriate vibrational wave sensors to impede the flow of vibrational power in all of the above mentioned wave forms beyond the actuator location. Additional sensor elements can be used to monitor the performance and adjust the electrical inputs to maximize the attenuation of vibrational energy
Pion double charge exchange on 4He
The doubly differential cross sections for the He
reaction were calculated using both a two-nucleon sequential single charge
exchange model and an intranuclear cascade code. Final state interactions
between the two final protons which were the initial neutrons were included in
both methods. At incident pion energies of 240 and 270 MeV the low-energy peak
observed experimentally in the energy spectrum of the final pions can be
understood only if the contribution of pion production is included. The
calculated cross sections are compared with data.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure

To initiate a study of the possible uses of convex functions in General
Relativity, we discuss the consequences of a spacetime or an
initial data set admitting a suitably defined convex
function. We show how the existence of a convex function on a spacetime places

The Boltzmann factor, DNA melting, and Brownian ratchets: Topics in an introductory physics sequence for biology and premedical students
Three, interrelated biologically-relevant examples of biased random walks are
presented: (1) A model for DNA melting, modelled as DNA unzipping, which
provides a way to illustrate the role of the Boltzmann factor in a venue
well-known to biology and pre-medical students; (2) the activity of helicase
motor proteins in unzipping double-stranded DNA, for example, at the
replication fork, which is an example of a Brownian ratchet; (3) force
generation by actin polymerization, which is another Brownian ratchet, and for
which the force and actin-concentration dependence of the velocity of actin
polymerization is determined
Estimation of Kalman filter model parameters from an ensemble of tests
A methodology for estimating initial mean and covariance parameters in a Kalman filter model from an ensemble of nonidentical tests is presented. In addition, the problem of estimating time constants and process noise levels is addressed. Practical problems such as developing and validating inertial instrument error models from laboratory test data or developing error models of individual phases of a test are generally considered

Pulping characteristics of Pinus caribaea from Fiji: The effect of rate of growth
Samples of Pinus caribaea Mor. var hondurensis Barr. and Golf. from Drasa and Seaqaqa in Fiji were sub-divided so that they represented the fastest and slowest growth rate on each site. It was found that the fast growing trees yielded approximately twice the volume of wood yielded by the slow growing trees. There were no significant differences in apparent wood density or chemical composition, in pulp yield or ease of digestion by the sulphate process or in the characteristics of the unbleached pulp. In the absence of better information on which to base a selection programme, the limited evidence of this trial indicates that the best policy for the forester producing pulp wood is to adopt methods and to make selections to obtain high volume production
