    Validation of TiAlN functional coatings through cryo-tribological characterization using a pin-on-disk experiment

    Abstract The purpose of this study has been to investigate the effects of TiAlN functional coatings in cryo-tribological pin-on-disk experiments. Nowadays, the introduction of new machining technologies for chip removal, both at high speed and in cryogenic conditions, is posing new challenges and opening new horizons to research. As a matter of fact, that in this technology needs to focus on the choice of workpiece materials to be machining and tools coatings used. For the latter, the wear phenomenon has been studied employing pins-on-disk (made by nickel-based alloys) under a liquid nitrogen jet flows simulating cryogenic machining. The coatings used have been of two different types: the coating C1 is a ZrTiAlN quaternary, while the coating C2 is a TiAlN/ZrN. The films were deposited with processes developed by the ENEA Brindisi laboratory using a dual magnetron sputtering and HiPPMS physical deposition technique. The wear measures were acquired employing a full factorial design with two factors: i.e., the test conditions (DRY or CRYO) and the pin coatings (not coated NC, coating C1 or C2). The number of tests was 12 since 2 were the replications. Based on preliminary experimental results, it can be stated that there is a type of coating, i.e., TiAlN/ZrN, that allows for high processing speed, high material removal, and a considerable increase in tool life

    Occurrence of Toxic Cyanobacterial Blooms in Rio de la Plata Estuary, Argentina: Field Study and Data Analysis

    Water samples were collected during 3 years (2004–2007) at three sampling sites in the Rio de la Plata estuary. Thirteen biological, physical, and chemical parameters were determined on the water samples. The presence of microcystin-LR in the reservoir samples, and also in domestic water samples, was confirmed and quantified. Microcystin-LR concentration ranged between 0.02 and 8.6 μg.L−1. Principal components analysis was used to identify the factors promoting cyanobacteria growth. The proliferation of cyanobacteria was accompanied by the presence of high total and fecal coliforms bacteria (>1500 MNP/100 mL), temperature ≥25°C, and total phosphorus content ≥1.24 mg·L−1. The observed fluctuating patterns of Microcystis aeruginosa, total coliforms, and Microcystin-LR were also described by probabilistic models based on the log-normal and extreme value distributions.     16s rrna sequencing analysis of the gut microbiota in broiler chickens prophylactically administered with antimicrobial agents

    In poultry production, gut microbiota (GM) plays a pivotal role and influences different host functions related to the efficiency of production performances. Antimicrobial (AM) use is one of the main factors affecting GM composition and functions. Although several studies have focused their attention on the role of AMs as growth promoters in the modulation of GM in broilers, the consequences of higher AM concentrations administered during prophylactic treatments need to be better elucidated. For this purpose, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to evaluate the impact of different prophylactic AM protocols on the composition and diversity of the broiler GM. Diversity analysis has shown that AM treatment significantly affects alpha diversity in ileum and beta diversity in both ileum and caecum. In ileal samples, the Enterobacteriaceae family has been shown to be particularly affected by AM treatments. AMs have been demonstrated to affect GM composition in broiler. These findings indicate that withdrawal periods were not enough for the restoral of the original GM. Further studies are needed for a better elucidation of the negative effects caused by an altered GM in broilers

    Light-emitting textiles: Device architectures, working principles, and applications

    E-textiles represent an emerging technology aiming toward the development of fabric with augmented functionalities, enabling the integration of displays, sensors, and other electronic components into textiles. Healthcare, protective clothing, fashion, and sports are a few examples application areas of e-textiles. Light-emitting textiles can have different applications: Sensing, fashion, visual communication, light therapy, etc. Light emission can be integrated with textiles in different ways: Fabricating light-emitting fibers and planar light-emitting textiles or employing side-emitting polymer optical fibers (POFs) coupled with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Different kinds of technology have been investigated: Alternating current electroluminescent devices (ACELs), inorganic and organic LEDs, and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The different device working principles and architectures are discussed in this review, highlighting the most relevant aspects and the possible approaches for their integration with textiles. Regarding POFs, the methodology to obtain side emissions and the critical aspects for their integration into textiles are discussed in this review. The main applications of light-emitting fabrics are illustrated, demonstrating that LEDs, alone or coupled with POFs, represent the most robust technology. On the other hand, OLEDs (Organic LEDs) are very promising for the future of light-emitting fabrics, but some issues still need to be addressed

    Near-Infrared Adaptive Optics Spectroscopy of Binary Brown Dwarf HD 130948B and C

    We present near-infrared spectroscopy of low-mass companions in a nearby triple system HD 130948 (Gliese 564, HR 5534). Adaptive optics on the Subaru Telescope allowed spectroscopy of the individual components of the 0".13 binary system. Based on a direct comparison with a series of template spectra, we determined the spectral types of HD 130948B and C to be L4 +- 1. If we take the young age of the primary star into account (0.3-0.8 Gyr), HD 130948B and C most likely are a binary brown dwarf system.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Successful private–public funding of paediatric medicines research: lessons from the EU programme to fund research into off-patent medicines

    The European Paediatric Regulation mandated the European Commission to fund research on off-patent medicines with demonstrated therapeutic interest for children. Responding to this mandate, five FP7 project calls were launched and 20 projects were granted. This paper aims to detail the funded projects and their preliminary results. Publicly available sources have been consulted and a descriptive analysis has been performed. Twenty Research Consortia including 246 partners in 29 European and non-European countries were created (involving 129 universities or public funded research organisations, 51 private companies with 40 SMEs, 7 patient associations). The funded projects investigate 24 medicines, covering 10 therapeutic areas in all paediatric age groups. In response to the Paediatric Regulation and to apply for a Paediatric Use Marketing Authorisation, 15 Paediatric Investigation Plans have been granted by the EMAPaediatric Committee, including 71 studies of whom 29 paediatric clinical trials, leading to a total of 7,300 children to be recruited in more than 380 investigational centres. Conclusion: Notwithstanding the EU contribution for each study is lower than similar publicly funded projects, and also considering the complexity of paediatric research, these projects are performing high-quality research and are progressing towards the increase of new paediatric medicines on the market. Private–public partnerships have been effectively implemented, providing a good example for future collaborative actions. Since these projects cover a limited number of offpatent drugs and many unmet therapeutic needs in paediatrics remain, it is crucial foreseeing new similar initiatives in forthcoming European funding programmes
