Disorder-Induced Resistive Anomaly Near Ferromagnetic Phase Transitions

We show that the resistivity rho(T) of disordered ferromagnets near, and above, the Curie temperature T_c generically exhibits a stronger anomaly than the scaling-based Fisher-Langer prediction. Treating transport beyond the Boltzmann description, we find that within mean-field theory, d\rho/dT exhibits a |T-T_c|^{-1/2} singularity near T_c. Our results, being solely due to impurities, are relevant to ferromagnets with low T_c, such as SrRuO3 or diluted magnetic semiconductors, whose mobility near T_c is limited by disorder.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; V2: with a few clarifications, as publishe

    Automated Cardiac Realtime MRI Evaluation

    Get PDF
We introduce our workflow to tackle automated evaluation of cardiac realtime MRI. The key approach is inspired by Active Learning and consists of N steps. First a limited amount of Training Data is annotated by staff with expert knowledge in the domain of pediatric cardiology. With this data we train a UNet using nnU-Net (Isensee, et. al). We then predict semantic labels with the trained model and use various techniques to judge the quality of each prediction. With that we are able to label each predicted segmentation with high or low quality. Predictions judged as low quality ones, are then presented to the domain experts and are manually corrected by them. Then, we can add those high quality labels to the training data set and start a new iteration by training the model. When the quality of predictions of an entire data set to be analyzed is high enough, we go on to synchronize the data set by assembling volumes of specific cardiac-respiration combinations based on the semantic segmentations. Finally, we are able to compute the stroke volume at different respiratory phases and compare them. The workflow explained above is deployed as a Plugin for the Software "3D Slicer"

Stichwörter: Risikobewertung, Pflanzenschutzmittel, VögelAssessing bird species in the registration process of pesticides in EuropeAbstractWe provide an overview and discussion of the methodology currently used to assess the acute and chronic (i.e. reproductive) risk posed by plant protection products to birds. The methodology follows guidance published by the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA (EFSA, 2009). Our overview begins with a short introduction including a brief discussion of recent changes to the regulations on which the EFSA Guidance is based. The standard risk assessment procedure is then explained using the example of a hypothetical fungicide. This is followed by a discussion of the basis, weighting and evaluation of the current risk assessment methodology for birds. Keywords: risk assessment, plant protection products, bird

WebCARMA: a web application for the functional and taxonomic classification of unassembled metagenomic reads

Gerlach W, Jünemann S, Tille F, Goesmann A, Stoye J. WebCARMA: a web application for the functional and taxonomic classification of unassembled metagenomic reads. BMC Bioinformatics. 2009;10(1):430.Background Metagenomics is a new field of research on natural microbial communities. High-throughput sequencing techniques like 454 or Solexa-Illumina promise new possibilities as they are able to produce huge amounts of data in much shorter time and with less efforts and costs than the traditional Sanger technique. But the data produced comes in even shorter reads (35-100 basepairs with Illumina, 100-500 basepairs with 454-sequencing). CARMA is a new software pipeline for the characterisation of species composition and the genetic potential of microbial samples using short, unassembled reads. Results In this paper, we introduce WebCARMA, a refined version of CARMA available as a web application for the taxonomic and functional classification of unassembled (ultra-)short reads from metagenomic communities. In addition, we have analysed the applicability of ultra-short reads in metagenomics. Conclusions We show that unassembled reads as short as 35 bp can be used for the taxonomic classification of a metagenome. The web application is freely available at http://webcarma.cebitec.uni-bielefeld.d

Tango Controls and data pipeline for petawatt laser experiments

    Get PDF
The Centre for Advanced Laser Applications in Garching, Germany, is home to the ATLAS-3000 multi-petawatt laser, dedicated to research on laser particle acceleration and its applications. A control system based on Tango Controls is implemented for both the laser and four experimental areas. The device server approach features high modularity, which, in addition to the hardware control, enables a quick extension of the system and allows for automated data acquisition of the laser parameters and experimental data for each laser shot. In this paper we present an overview of our implementation of the control system, as well as our advances in terms of experimental operation, online supervision and data processing. We also give an outlook on advanced experimental supervision and online data evaluation – where the data can be processed in a pipeline – which is being developed on the basis of this infrastructure
