U.S. public and private venture capital markets, 1998-2001: A fundamental information analysis
Systematic analysis of U.S. capital markets reveals important empirical facts that analytical modeling or empirical research seeking to explain the 1998-2001 movements needs to recognize. There is no single "bubble point" at which U.S. capital markets had an epiphany that valuations required a sharp downward re-evaluation. Rather, different sectors had different points after which ex post sustained declines occurred. For the NASDAQ/NYSE/AMEX public capital markets, the sustained ex post declines occurred starting in March 2000 for the computer software industry and in September 2000 for the computer hardware industry. Private venture capital investment in new ventures peaked in the March 2000 quarter for software and in the September 2000 quarter for hardware and communications. Four sectors exhibiting extreme price movements are identified - computer hardware, computer software, telecommunications, and biotech/pharmaceuticals. These sectors had observable characteristics prior to 1998 that implied higher risk - they had higher relative risk (CAPM beta), higher standard deviation of security returns, more extreme revenue growth increases (decreases) in the upper (lower) tails, and a higher propensity for negative net income. During the 1998-2001 period, companies in these sectors had abnormally high revenue growth rates. An Internet sample of companies exhibits even higher abnormal revenue growth rates relative to either prior periods or other companies in the 1998-2001 period. The large relative increases and decreases in the market capitalization of U.S. capital markets in 1998-2001 may well have more grounding in risk-reward asset pricing theory than many commentators have recognized.capital markets; stock prices; Internet stocks; stock market bubble;

In the former the suitable period is during summer and beginning of monsoons, and in the latter in summer and winter months. Making a difference - the appropriate use of web technology
Much has been written elsewhere about how, different Information Technology tools, can in principle be used by groups or communities to make their web sites more effective for Continued Professional Development. In practice, complex use is not often the case. In particular, three sites were studied in Scotland, which provided web facilities for the over 60s. The sites, and the communities they served, used only simple Information Technology. Nevertheless, they enabled their communities to participate effectively, on the 'right side', of the European population's 'digital divide'
Collateral impacts of pandemic COVID-19 drive the nosocomial spread of antibiotic resistance
Circulation of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MRB) in healthcare facilities is a major public health problem. These settings have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, notably due to surges in COVID-19 caseloads and the implementation of infection control measures. Yet collateral impacts of pandemic COVID-19 on MRB epidemiology remain poorly understood. Here, we present a dynamic transmission model in which SARS-CoV-2 and MRB co-circulate among patients and staff in a hospital population in an early pandemic context. Responses to SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks are captured mechanistically, reflecting impacts on factors relevant for MRB transmission, including contact behaviour, hand hygiene compliance, antibiotic prescribing and population structure. In a first set of simulations, broad parameter ranges are accounted for, representative of diverse bacterial species and hospital settings. On average, COVID-19 control measures coincide with MRB prevention, including fewer incident cases and fewer cumulative person-days of patient MRB colonization. However, surges in COVID-19 caseloads favour MRB transmission and lead to increased rates of antibiotic resistance, especially in the absence of concomitant control measures. In a second set of simulations, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli are simulated in specific hospital wards and pandemic response scenarios. Antibiotic resistance dynamics are highly context-specific in these cases, and SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks significantly impact bacterial epidemiology only in facilities with high underlying risk of bacterial transmission. Crucially, antibiotic resistance burden is reduced in facilities with timelier, more effective implementation of COVID-19 control measures. This highlights the control of antibiotic resistance as an important collateral benefit of robust pandemic preparedness.
Significance Statement Impacts of COVID-19 on the spread of antibiotic resistance are poorly understood. Here, an epidemiological model accounting for the simultaneous spread of SARS-CoV-2 and antibiotic-resistant bacteria is presented. The model is tailored to healthcare settings during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and accounts for hand hygiene, inter-individual contact behaviour, and other factors relevant for pathogen spread. Simulations demonstrate that public health policies enacted to slow the spread of COVID-19 also tend to limit bacterial transmission. However, surges in COVID-19 cases simultaneously select for higher rates of antibiotic resistance. Selection for resistance is thus mitigated by prompt implementation of effective COVID-19 prevention policies. This highlights the control of antibiotic resistance as an important collateral benefit of pandemic preparedness
Probing Broad Absorption Line Quasar Outflows: X-ray Insights
Energetic outflows appear to occur in conjunction with active mass accretion
onto supermassive black holes. These outflows are most readily observed in the
approximately 10% of quasars with broad absorption lines, where the observer's
line of sight passes through the wind. Until fairly recently, the paucity of
X-ray data from these objects was notable, but now sensitive hard-band missions
such as Chandra and XMM-Newton are routinely detecting broad absorption line
quasars. The X-ray regime offers qualitatively new information for the
understanding of these objects, and these new results must be taken into

A theoretical and empirical investigation of nutritional label use
Due in part to increasing diet-related health problems caused, among others, by obesity, nutritional labelling has been considered important, mainly because it can provide consumers with information that can be used to make informed and healthier food choices. Several studies have focused on the empirical perspective of nutritional label use. None of these studies, however, have focused on developing a theoretical economic model that would adequately describe nutritional label use based on a utility theoretic framework. We attempt to fill this void by developing a simple theoretical model of nutritional label use, incorporating the time a consumer spends reading labels as part of the food choice process. The demand equations of the model are then empirically tested. Results suggest the significant role of several variables that flow directly from the model which, to our knowledge, have not been used in any previous empirical work
Isotopic Grand Unification with the Inclusion of Gravity (revised version)
We introduce a dual lifting of unified gauge theories, the first
characterized by the isotopies, which are axiom- preserving maps into broader
structures with positive-definite generalized units used for the representation
of matter under the isotopies of the Poincare' symmetry, and the second
characterized by the isodualities, which are anti-isomorphic maps with
negative-definite generalized units used for the representation of antimatter
under the isodualities of the Poincare' symmetry. We then submit, apparently
for the first time, a novel grand unification with the inclusion of gravity for
matter embedded in the generalized positive-definite units of unified gauge
theories while gravity for antimatter is embedded in the isodual isounit. We
then show that the proposed grand unification provides realistic possibilities
for a resolution of the axiomatic incompatibilities between gravitation and
electroweak interactions due to curvature, antimatter and the fundamental

Influences of race and clinical variables on psychiatric genetic research participation: Results from a schizophrenia sample
Advances in genetics has led to a better understanding of both genetic and environmental contributions to psychiatric mental health disorders. But psychiatric genetics research is predominantly Eurocentric, and individuals of non-European ancestry continue to be significantly underrepresented in research studies with potential to worsen existing mental health disparities. The objective of this study was to examine factors associated with genetic study participation in a schizophrenia sample. The study sample was extracted from the Clinical Antipsychotics Trial of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) schizophrenia study which enrolled 1493 patients with chronic schizophrenia between the ages of 18–65 years and incorporated an optional genetic sub-study. Using a logistic regression model (N = 1249), we examined sociodemographic and clinical variables that were independently associated with the outcome i.e., participation in the genetic sub-study. The genetic sub-study had a lower proportion of Black (30% in genetic vs 40% in CATIE overall) and other race (4% vs 6%) participants. Increased severity of psychopathology symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 0.78, p = 0.004) decreased the odds whereas better reasoning scores (OR = 1.16, p = 0.036) increased the odds of genetic study participation. Compared to Black participants, White participants were significantly more likely to participate in the genetic sub-study (OR = 1.43, p = 0.009). Clinical factors in addition to race significantly impact genetic study participation of individuals with chronic schizophrenia. Our findings highlight the need for future research that examines the interactive effects of race and clinical factors such as symptom severity on psychiatrically ill individuals’ choice to participate in genetics studies and to identify targeted strategies to increase equitable representation in psychiatric genetics research
