Dynamics of Electrons in Graded Semiconductors
I present a theory of electron dynamics in semiconductors with slowly varying
composition. I show that the frequency-dependent conductivity, required for the
description of transport and optical properties, can be obtained from a
knowledge of the band structures and momentum matrix elements of homogeneous
semiconductor alloys. New sum rules for the electronic oscillator strengths,
which apply within a given energy band or between any two bands, are derived,
and a general expression for the width of the intraband absorption peak is
given. Finally, the low-frequency dynamics is discussed, and a correspondence
with the semiclassical motion is established.Comment: 4 pages, Revte
Development of an efficient procedure for calculating the aerodynamic effects of planform variation
Numerical procedures to compute gradients in aerodynamic loading due to planform shape changes using panel method codes were studied. Two procedures were investigated: one computed the aerodynamic perturbation directly; the other computed the aerodynamic loading on the perturbed planform and on the base planform and then differenced these values to obtain the perturbation in loading. It is indicated that computing the perturbed values directly can not be done satisfactorily without proper aerodynamic representation of the pressure singularity at the leading edge of a thin wing. For the alternative procedure, a technique was developed which saves most of the time-consuming computations from a panel method calculation for the base planform. Using this procedure the perturbed loading can be calculated in about one-tenth the time of that for the base solution
Virginia Earth Science Collaborative Astronomy Course for Teachers
We describe the development and implementation of a professional development course for teachers of grades 4-12 designed to increase their content knowledge in astronomy, space science, and the nature of science using interactive presentations, and hands-on and inquiry-based lessons. The course, Space Science for Teachers, encompasses the astronomy and nature of science components of the Virginia Standards of Learning for grades 4-12 [1]. In addition to increasing their content knowledge, teachers gain experience using innovative teaching technologies, such as an inflatable planetarium, planetarium computer software, and computer controlled telescopes. The courses included evening laboratory sessions where teachers learned the constellations, how to find specific celestial objects, and how to use a variety of small telescopes. Participants received three graduate credit hours in science after completing the course requirements. Space Science for Teachers was taught at the University of Virginia in Summer 2005 and 2006, at George Mason University in Summer 2006 and 2007, at the University of Virginia Southwest Center in Abingdon, Virginia in Fall 2006, and at the MathScience Innovation Center in Richmond during Summer 2005 and 2007. From Patchwork to Network: Strategies for International Intellectual Property in Flux
Laws of intellectual property define what is bought and sold on media and technology markets, notably works, trademarks, and inventions. Laws and treaties have traditionally been made and enforced by nation-states operating in a patchwork of territories. Now, the media and technology marketplace is being globalized in digital networks. The law is only beginning to respond to this change.
To analyze this process in the field of intellectual property, this Article will consider the following questions: First, how is the patchwork of national laws lagging behind new networks in this field? Second, how does the international regime of intellectual property leave these laws in conflicts relative to the emerging global marketplace? Third, what strategies are available to private parties for dealing with legal uncertainties that are emerging in the short term? Lastly, how can these strategies be coordinated in the long term
Why do planetary wave number one and the ozone transport vary annually in the Northern Hemisphere and semiannually in the Southern Hemisphere
Evidence is cited from these studies and those of others showing the different nature of the yearly variations of the middle atmospheres of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Northern Hemisphere middle atmosphere is shown to be characterized by annual variations in planetary wave number one amplitude and the accompanying ozone transports. The Southern Hemisphere middle atmosphere is shown to be characterized by semiannual variations in the amplitude of planetary wave number one and the accompanying ozone transports. The amplitude of wave number two in both hemispheres appears to vary annually. Examination is made of the nature of the planetary wave forcing in both hemispheres as well as the planetary wave propagation characteristics in both hemispheres in an attempt to better understand this
Global atmospheric circulation statistics: Four year averages
Four year averages of the monthly mean global structure of the general circulation of the atmosphere are presented in the form of latitude-altitude, time-altitude, and time-latitude cross sections. The numerical values are given in tables. Basic parameters utilized include daily global maps of temperature and geopotential height for 18 pressure levels between 1000 and 0.4 mb for the period December 1, 1978 through November 30, 1982 supplied by NOAA/NMC. Geopotential heights and geostrophic winds are constructed using hydrostatic and geostrophic formulae. Meridional and vertical velocities are calculated using thermodynamic and continuity equations. Fields presented in this report are zonally averaged temperature, zonal, meridional, and vertical winds, and amplitude of the planetary waves in geopotential height with zonal wave numbers 1-3. The northward fluxes of sensible heat and eastward momentum by the standing and transient eddies along with their wavenumber decomposition and Eliassen-Palm flux propagation vectors and divergences by the standing and transient eddies along with their wavenumber decomposition are also given. Large interhemispheric differences and year-to-year variations are found to originate in the changes in the planetary wave activity
Tidally Triggered Star Formation in Close Pairs of Galaxies: Major and Minor Interactions
We study star formation in a sample of 345 galaxies in 167 pairs and compact
groups drawn from the original CfA2 Redshift Survey and from a follow-up search
for companions. We construct our sample with attention to including pairs with
luminosity contrast |\Delta m_R| >= 2. These 57 galaxies with |\Delta m_R| >= 2
provide a set of nearby representative cases of minor interactions, a central
feature of the hierarchical galaxy formation model. Here we report the
redshifts and positions of the 345 galaxies in our sample, and of 136 galaxies
in apparent pairs that are superpositions. In the pairs sample as a whole,
there are strong correlations between the equivalent width of the H\alpha
emission line and the projected spatial and the line-of-sight velocity
separation of the pair. For pairs of small luminosity contrast, |\Delta m_R| <
2, the member galaxies show a correlation between the equivalent width of
H\alpha and the projected spatial separation of the pair. However, for pairs
with large luminosity contrast, |\Delta m_R| >= 2, we detect no correlation
between the equivalent width of H\alpha and the projected spatial separation.
The relative luminosity of the companion galaxy is more important in a
gravitational tidal interaction than the intrinsic luminosity of the galaxy.
Central star formation across the entire pairs sample depends strongly on the
luminosity ratio, |\Delta m_R|, a reasonable proxy for the mass ratio of the
pair; pairs composed of similarly luminous galaxies produce the strongest
bursts of star formation. Pairs with |\Delta m_R| >= 2 rarely have EW(H\alpha)
