Plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) as a natural mitigation strategy to reduce nitrogen losses from pasture-based dairy systems : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Sciences at Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand

The incorporation of plantain (Plantago lanceolata) into cows’ diet can reduce urine nitrogen (N) concentrations and modify the soil N cycle in urine patches by inhibiting nitrification. The objective of this thesis was to assess the potential of plantain as a mitigation option for N loss from dairy farms to the environment by measuring N leaching (nitrate [ NO3-]), and N emissions (nitrous oxide [N2O] and ammonia [NH3]) from plantain swards on a Pallic soil, and to evaluate the inhibitor effect of aucubin, a secondary metabolite, on N losses from soil. An important aspect of this study was the evaluation of NO3- leaching at the paddock scale from three pasture treatments (plantain, plantain-clovers mix and ryegrass-white clover) throughout two grazing seasons. Pasture treatments were grazed with lactating cows approximately monthly from September 2017 to May 2019. All the drainage from the grazed plots was monitored and sampled for NO3- and total N analyses during the 2017, 2018 and 2019 drainage seasons. The effect of plantain on N2O and NH3 emissions was evaluated in two field experiments carried out in spring 2017 and autumn/winter 2018. The N2O emissions from soil were measured using the static chamber method, and NH3 losses with the dynamic chamber method. In this field experiment the effects of adding two urine types (from cows grazing plantain or ryegrass-white clover) to two swards (plantain or ryegrass-white clover) were evaluated. The ability of aucubin to reduce N losses from urine patches was studied in a lysimeter experiment where aucubin was applied along with urine from cows grazing ryegrass-white clover pasture to ryegrass-white clover and plantain swards. In a hydroponic experiment, the release of secondary metabolites from a plantain root system was quantified. The plantain pasture treatment reduced NO3- leaching by 48 and 58% (2.6 and 3.8 kg NO3--N ha–1, respectively) compared to ryegrass-white clover and plantain-clovers mix pasture treatments, in the 2018 drainage season. During the 2019 drainage season, NO3- leaching between the plantain (4.0 kg NO3--N ha–1) and ryegrass-white clover (3.1 kg NO3--N ha–1) treatments were similar, which was likely due to a lower proportion of plantain in the sward during the critical summer-autumn period. In spring 2017, even though the urea-N concentration was 45% lower in urine of cows fed plantain than in urine of cows fed ryegrass-white clover swards, the cumulative N2O emissions from urine Abstract ii of cows grazing plantain was similar to urine of cows grazing ryegrass-white clover swards. Nitrous oxide emissions were reduced 31% by the plantain sward (1.4 kg N2O-N ha–1) in spring 2017. In autumn/winter 2018, N2O emissions from urine of cows grazing plantain (urea-N concentration was 40% lower in the urine of cows fed plantain than in the urine of cows grazing ryegrass-white clover pastures) were 48% lower (4.3 kg N2O-N ha–1) than from urine of cows grazing ryegrass-white clover. However, in this season, the cumulative N2O losses were 69% (7.1 kg N2O-N ha–1) higher from the plantain sward than the ryegrass-white clover sward and were associated with an increase in the water filled pore space (WFPS) in the plantain soil. The lower urea-N concentration in urine from cows fed plantain compared to ryegrass-white clover reduced NH3 losses from plantain and ryegrass-white clover swards in both spring 2017 and in autumn/winter 2018. The lysimeter experiment also showed that plantain swards reduced N2O emissions by 50% (9.0 kg N2O-N ha–1) compared to ryegrass-white clover swards. The addition of aucubin reduced the N2O emissions from urine patches by 36% in ryegrass-white clover swards. Only small concentrations of secondary metabolites were detected in the roots exudates of plantain plants grown in the hydroponic experiment. A high aucubin concentration (12 g kg–1 DM) in plantain leaves was observed after 50 and 60 days of the hydroponic study. In conclusion, this research demonstrates the potential of plantain to mitigate N leaching from pastoral dairy systems and N2O and NH3 emissions from urine patches by reducing the N and urea-N concentrations in cow urine. There was also evidence of a plantain sward effect on N dynamics in the soil, which decreased N2O emissions, possibly through the release of aucubin into the soil via leaf litter

En el medio radiofónico aparecían nuevos géneros que conseguían enganchar a los oyentes entrega tras entrega. Radioteatro, radionovela y seriales fueron los invasores de las radios nacionales. Con sus historias y personajes permitían dar rienda suelta a la imaginación y hacer soñar a los españoles desde sus casas a través del transistor de radio. En los últimos años la ficción ha estado menos presente, sino casi desaparecida, de la parrilla. Ahora con la introducción de las nuevas tecnologías y técnicas digitales como la del podcasting se ha reforzado un género que parecía olvidado-despreciado. En este estudio se pretende examinar el estado de la ficción sonora en el pasado y en la actualidad. En primer lugar, a partir del análisis de programas de diferentes cadenas nacionales y plataformas digitales que se han hecho durante los últimos años. En segundo lugar, con la opinión de expertos se tratará de saber cuáles son las causas de su poca presencia y del auge que ha experimentado en los últimos años. En el análisis de las piezas radiofónicas se ha demostrado que en la actualidad se cuenta con una herramienta con la que no contaban en el siglo pasado, la tecnología. Los medios técnicos permiten hacer un producto de calidad y creíble. Mientras, Internet ha supuesto un cambio en todos los ámbitos, y la radio se ha visto favorecida por nuevas técnicas como la del podcasting. Ésta última es la que ha supuesto la multiplicación de entregas de ficción en las diferentes emisoras nacionales, acercándose a la media que existe en los medios británicos como British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, con cuatro entregas semanales de seriales.The sonorous fiction has supposed from his birth, in the middle of the 20th century, a route of leak for the company to the social, political and economic problems. JUSTO AROSEMENA: UTILITARISMO, INDUSTRIA Y MORAL

The article analyzes young Justo Arosemena’s thought, during the decades of 1830 and 1840. It confirms the reception by Arosemena, as a college student in Bogotá, of Bentham, Destutt de Tracy and Auguste Comte thought, among other notable philosophers. It describes his youth impregnated with Utilitarianism, the defence of liberties, the ideal of creating an industrious citizenship, to struggle against the "colonial siesta" instaurating the hegemony of public instructionand the renewal of juridical studies, the kingdom of public Morals, the useful knowledge, the hedonistic Ethics in those years of social romanticism. Justo Arosemena underlines the qualities of the benefits of industrial changes, of productive work, of working happiness, in order to attain progress and struggle against underdevelopment, searching for happiness and collective justice. The young Justo Arosemena discovers the isthmian misery, the dualism between the city of the elite and the poor urban zones. He experiments the failure of union with Colombia and the outrages of Mallarino-Bidlack treaty (1846). Justo Arosemena notices the scarcity of industries, the bad state of roads, the general ignorance, the lack of industrial education. He circumscribes the human groups that shape Panamanian society and dreams about the success of civil morality.El artículo analiza el pensamiento del Justo Arosemena joven, durante las décadas de 1830 y 1840 inclusive. Comprueba la recepción por el Arosemena, estudiante en Bogotá, del pensamiento de Bentham, Destutt de Tracy y Augusto Comte, entre otras notabilidades. Se describe la atmósfera de su época juvenil impregnada de utilitarismo, de la defensa de las libertades, del anhelo de crear una ciudadanía industriosa, de combatir la “siesta colonial” mediante el imperio de la instrucción pública y de la renovación de los estudios jurídicos, del dominio de la moral pública, del conocimiento útil, de la ética edonista en años de romanticismo social. Se resaltan las bondades de los cambios industriales, del trabajo productivo, de la alegría laboral a fin de incentivar el progreso y combatir la barbarie aspirando a la felicidad, el bienestar y la justicia colectiva. El joven Justo Arosemena comprueba el atraso istmico, el dualismo intramurosarrabal, la miseria urbana y del campo. Capta el fracaso de la unión a Colombia y el ultraje del tratado Mallarino-Bidlack (1846). Advierte la falta de industrias, las deficientes comunicaciones, la ignorancia general, la carencia de educación industrial. Factores que afectan la decisión de adopción de riego en maíz combinando retornos y riesgos

En el presente trabajo se busca contribuir a la definición de una estrategia de riego que maximice el beneficio esperable de la producción del maíz en Uruguay. A partir de simulaciones de rendimiento realizadas en el software DSSAT, se comparan distintas estrategias de riego deficitario para una situación particular de Uruguay que combina un suelo, un paquete tecnológico y el clima de una localidad. Las variables económicas a tener en cuenta son la tasa de interés, precio de venta del maíz, precio de arrendamiento de la tierra y estructuras de costos de los factores de producción. Se estudian varias alternativas de riego deficitario, notando que el nivel de riego que maximiza el rendimiento físico no necesariamente coincide con aquel que maximiza el beneficio económico. Una vez obtenidos los resultados, se estudian distintos escenarios de aversión al riesgo del productor, variando el precio del maíz y la tasa de interés, con el fin de analizar la viabilidad del riego en cada caso

Profesorado Semipresencial y formación a lo largo de la vida

En el mundo actual los conocimientos cambian y caducan a un ritmo vertiginoso. Esta realidad invalida métodos de enseñanza-aprendizaje que privilegien la incorporación de información y datos posicionando en el centro de ese proceso a quien aprende. Actualmente se reconoce la necesidad de concebir la educación como un proceso permanente, fomentando el aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida y la importancia de capacitar a los estudiantes para el aprendizaje autónomo y permanente. Las investigaciones con relación a la identificación de competencias necesarias para el aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida hacen acuerdo en que toman jerarquía la búsqueda de información, el desarrollo de estrategias cognitivas, la planificación y organización del tiempo, el desarrollo de estrategias metacognitivas y las habilidades comunicacionales. La modalidad semipresencial de profesorado permite en nuestro país la realización de carreras de profesores para la enseñanza media en las que las asignaturas específicas se cursan mayoritariamente en una plataforma virtual. Estudios previos han sugerido el desarrollo en esta modalidad de competencias relacionadas con el aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida. Bajo esta hipótesis, se aplicó un cuestionario semiabierto a estudiantes de Ciencias Biológicas que cursaron en el año lectivo 2013, del que surge espontáneamente la contribución de la modalidad al desarrollo de todas las competencias reconocidas actualmente como necesarias para el aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida. Adicionalmente, surge el desarrollo de competencias en el manejo de tecnologías de información y comunicación

El valor del arte rupestre en la estética del paisaje /

El presente trabajo se centra en el sitio de arte rupestre Colomichicó ubicado en el Departamento Minas, en el Norte de la Provincia del Neuquén a 2.000 msnm. Su selección se basa en factores que responden a elementos históricos, arqueológicos, estéticos, paisajísticos y geológicos, siendo el más sobresaliente, la variedad y cantidad de grabados que allí se encuentran. Son más de 800 bloques, con 2400 grabados; en un ambiente natural, que debe ser considerado no sólo desde su valor como recurso natural, sino desde su valía estética. Esto implica el “paisaje natural” y su complementariedad con el arte desde una perspectiva integral

Minerales Pesados como Indicadores de Ambiente Tectonico en Arenas de la Plataforma Argentina entre los Paralelos 39º Y 43º Sur y El Golfo San Matías

Suites of heavy minerals of an Argentine continental shelf sector and San Matías Gulf were studied. The preponderance of the mafic suite was characterized by the abundance of clinopiroxenes (green augites) and ortopiroxenes (hyperstenes). In scarce proportion green hornblende, brown hornblende, lamprobolite and olivine are present. The suite derived from metamorphic rocks is always in percentages lower than 10% and is represented by epidote and garnet. The suite derived from metamorphic-granitic complex appears in form of traces, integrated by zircon, tourmaline, sillimanite and andalousite. Based on heavy minerals suites it was established that the sands correspond to a volcaniclastic paragenesis. They would come from active margins related to volcanic arches. The origin of the sediment would be related to the Tertiary volcanism of the “Andes”. The sediment resting area corresponds to a passive margin. The compositional differences between the continental shelf (platform) and continental sands respond to the proximity to different sources of contribution. The different etching grain surface that heavy minerals present could be attributed to several causes, among them intrastratal solution and action of sorting and mechanical abrasion in beach environment bring out

El Gran Bajo de los Huesos, su tectónica en relación con la morfología: Chubut, Argentina

El área de trabajo se ubica en el N E de la provincia del Chubut. Dentro de la misma se han analizado dos secciones; una continental formada por mesetas, depresiones y acantilados y otra subácuea hasta una profundidad cercana a los 50m. Para realizar la interpretación estructural de las mismas, se aplicó una metodología que abarcó desde los relevamientos morfológicos y estratigráficos de campo hasta los análisis de fotografías aéreas. Con la información altibatimétrica se confeccionaron bloques de diagramas que permitieron relacionar las morfologías superficiales con las posibles estructuras profundas que les dieron origen. Se determinó que las geoformas continentales, positivas y negativas, se hallan controladas por fallas que siguen tres orientaciones principales correspondientes a los modelos morfológicos de escarpas y líneas de falla. La morfología subácuea se relaciona con un estilo estructural denominado de bloques fallados con desplazamientos de los mismos.The area under study is situated at the NE of Chubut Province. Two sections were analyzed in it; a continental one formed by plateaus, depressions and cliffs and a subaqueous one down to near 50 m depth. In order to carry out its structural interpretation, a methodology containing morphological and stratigraphical survey and aereal photography analysis was applied. Diagram blocks were made with alti-bathymetric information which allowed to relate superficial mhorphologies with the possible deep structures that originated them. It was determined that positive and negative continental geoforms are controlled by fractures following thee principal orientations corresponding to the morphological models of scarps and faults.
