Dare et habere
The Italian cities of the last centuries of the Middle Ages continued to witness â alongside a progressive crystallisation of the social hierarchies â the economic and social ascent of individuals belonging to the 'middle classâ. These were homines novi who, without resorting to dynastic connections and often rejecting the associative model of the guilds, managed to build fortunes and dignity through trade, enterprise, the exploitation of the land, the solidarity of district and parish and the management of welfare. Emblematic of such careers is the figure of an economic agent originating from the rural district, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, who in 1429 founded in Milan a devotional and welfare institute, the Scuola della DivinitĂ . The book reconstructs the social, economic and spiritual conduct of Donato, placing it within the urban context of Milan in the first half of the fifteenth century.

Studi confraternali: orientamenti, problemi, testimonianze
This book is a collection of articles by Italian and foreign scholars designed to offer an overview of the processes and issues involved in the history of the confraternity movement, as yielded by studies in the historical, social, legal, literary and artistic spheres in the course of the twentieth century. The articles deal with the historical context of western Europe, and more specifically with Italy, in the period comprised between the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. The collection is divided into four sections: Individuals and groups, which explores the emergence of an interest in confraternity communities in disciplines addressing the history of social groups, of the rural world, of women and of young people. The legal and institutional framework deals with issues of legitimacy and institutional structure. The economics of charity analyses the relations between the confraternities and the hospital structures, the procedures for the administration of the assets, and the strategies of governance underlying the policies of aid of which the confraternities were the principal instrument. Finally, the section Theatrical, musical, artistic and documentary evidence is devoted to the sources that have handed down evidence of the operation of the confraternities.

Albertanus of Brescia (c. 1190s - c.1250s) is nowadays considered by international historiography as one of the key figures of the Middle Ages. Judge, politician, writer, preacher, he was the author of three moral-didactic treatises and five confraternity sermons that enjoyed great diffusion, both in their original Latin and in subsequent translations in many European languages. heâs been attributed the pedagogical and ethical project of building the medieval civis, member of the religious community and of the state as well. Through the lens of a codex of the Trivulziana Library, belonged in the late 14th century to two Milanese brothers, weâll try to check the success of this project, deepening some aspects of the catchment area and of the transmission channels of his works. In particular, they will be taken into consideration social and political environments, persistence of Latin, womenâs fruition.

The volume deals with an uncommon theme in medieval history: the prison and its inhabitants. In the medieval prison, the prisoners - waiting for their sentence, or imprisoned for debts, or because socially dangerous or found guilty of a crime - were not abandoned to themselves; families, the Church, devout lay people and public authorities took charge of their needs. In the case of Milan, the prison system and the relationship between prisoners, justice and mercy takes on particular nuances. Prisons (including private ones) are numerous and scattered throughout the city: the largest is a prison-hospital, which certainly imprisons, but suggests that it is useful (for economic reasons) to help the survival of the offender and their return to society. The citizens of Milan in the 15th Century are also aware of the risks of abandoning prisoners (men and women) to a justice that, for its costs, only protects the strongest. Here are the Protectors of prisoners: useful not only to the weak ones in prison, but also to the Dominus, who supports them. The duke, interested in correcting the system excesses, is also (and perhaps above all) eager to show himself merciful, and as such superior to the law. Investigating the condition of prisoners thus proves to be a way to grasp not only the dynamics of social exclusion and inclusion relevant to the control of deviance, but also the mechanisms of relationship between rulers and subjects in the late Middle Ages
Proteggere dal rischio e dal bisogno. Forme cripto assicurative nelle corporazioni e nelle confraternite medievali italiane
The contribution aims to trace cryptoâinsurance forms in the medieval Italian guilds and confraternities, apt to protect citizens and workers from the economic and biological unknowns of life. During the Middle Ages, in fact, belonging to a guild meant to be protected from various risks. Guild members received help in cases of infirmity and accident and obtained cash benefits, medicalâpharmaceutical assistance and hospitalisation. They were protected against the financial risks of unemployment and old age. Furthermore, they could receive compensation for workârelated damages. Guilds took care of the body and the soul of deceased members. Finally, guild members may have been helped in extreme cases of deprivation of liberty: guilds may have paid ransom to pirates as well as bandits, and they may have helped in cases of economic and political imprisonment. If, in most cases, guild members did not acquire a legally enforceable right to help, but simply developed a reasonable expectation of receiving it, there are examples of the separation of funds intended to finance the support and assistance mechanisms in the event of illness, accident or death. These funds came from entrance fees, annual subscriptions, donations, fines, investments in property and land as well as from other financial activities. I soci ricevevano aiuto in caso di infermitĂ e infortuni grazie a prestazioni in denaro, assistenza medicoâfarmaceutica e ricovero in ospedale.
Introduzione
The volume is one of the results of the PRIN 2015, Alle origini del welfare (XIII- XVI secolo). The authors approach the history of mountain hospitals in a comparative perspective, focusing on case studies from Northern and Central Italy, Southern France, and Northern Spain. Archival and orographic research on a hitherto littleâexplored theme of medieval hospitalsâ history has made it possible to redefine the physiognomy of mountain hospitals â which turned out to be not only hospices and refuges, but also sanctuaries, fortresses, farms, and inns â and to revise some historiographic convictions: the functionality of these institutions appeared to depend more on the needs of those who lived, worked, and conâ trolled mountain areas, rather than on the needs of occasional travellers, such as pilgrims. The book is therefore an original and significant contribution to the reconstruction of the historical landscapes and of the economic, political and social structures, as well as the cultural and religious frameworks, of the meâ dieval territories.
