Atomic hydrogen cleaning of GaSb(001) surfaces
We show that the (001) surface of GaSb can be cleaned efficiently by exposure to atomic hydrogen at substrate temperatures in the range 400–470 °C. This treatment removes carbon and oxygen contamination, leaving a clean, ordered surface with a symmetric (1 × 3) reconstruction after a total H2 dose of approximately 150 kL. An ordered but partially oxidized surface is generated during cleaning, and the removal of this residual oxide is the most difficult part of the process. Auger electron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction were used to monitor the chemical cleanliness and the ordering of the surface during the cleaning process, whereas high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy was used to probe the electronic structure in the near-surface region. The results obtained indicates that this cleaning procedure leaves no residual electronic damage in the near-surface region of the Te-doped (n ~ 5 × 1017 cm – 3) samples of GaSb(001) studied
Accumulation layer profiles at InAs polar surfaces
High resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, dielectric theory simulations, and charge profile calculations have been used to study the accumulation layer and surface plasmon excitations at the In-terminated (001)-(4 × 1) and (111)A-(2 × 2) surfaces of InAs. For the (001) surface, the surface state density is 4.0 ± 2.0 × 1011 cm – 2, while for the (111)A surface it is 7.5 ± 2.0 × 1011 cm – 2, these values being independent of the surface preparation procedure, bulk doping level, and substrate temperature. Changes of the bulk Fermi level with temperature and bulk doping level do, however, alter the position of the surface Fermi level. Ion bombardment and annealing of the surface affect the accumulation layer only through changes in the effective bulk doping level and the bulk momentum scattering rate, with no discernible changes in the surface charge density
The correlation of VLF propagation variations with atmospheric planetary-scale waves
Variations in the received daytime phase of long distance, cesium-controlled, VLF transmission were compared to the height variations of the 10-mb isobaric surface during the first three months of 1965 and 1969. The VLF phase values are also compared to height variations of constant electron densities in the E-region and to variations of f-min which have been shown to be well correlated with planetary-scale variations in the stratosphere by Deland and Cavalieri (1973). The VLF phase variations show good correlation with these previous ionospheric measurements and with the 10-mb surfaces. The planetary scale waves in the stratosphere are shown to be travelling on the average eastward in 1965 and westward in 1969. These correlations are interpreted as due to the propagation of travelling planetary scale waves with westward tilted wave fronts. Upward energy transport due to the vertical structure of those waves is also discussed. These correlations provide further evidence for the coupling between the lower ionosphere at about 70 km altitude (the daytime VLF reflection height and the stratosphere, and they demonstrate the importance of planetary wave phenomena to VLF propagation
In vitro and in vivo effects of salbutamol on neutrophil function in acute lung injury
Background: Intravenous salbutamol (albuterol) reduces lung water in patients with the acute respiratory
distress syndrome (ARDS). Experimental data show that it also reduces pulmonary neutrophil accumulation or
activation and inflammation in ARDS.
Aim: To investigate the effects of salbutamol on neutrophil function.
Methods: The in vitro effects of salbutamol on neutrophil function were determined. Blood and
bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid were collected from 35 patients with acute lung injury (ALI)/ARDS, 14
patients at risk from ARDS and 7 ventilated controls at baseline and after 4 days’ treatment with placebo or
salbutamol (ALI/ARDS group). Alveolar–capillary permeability was measured in vivo by thermodilution
(PiCCO). Neutrophil activation, adhesion molecule expression and inflammatory cytokines were measured.
Results: In vitro, physiological concentrations of salbutamol had no effect on neutrophil chemotaxis, viability
or apoptosis. Patients with ALI/ARDS showed increased neutrophil activation and adhesion molecule
expression compared with at risk-patients and ventilated controls. There were associations between alveolar–
capillary permeability and BAL myeloperoxidase (r = 0.4, p = 0.038) and BAL interleukin 8 (r = 0.38,
p = 0.033). In patients with ALI/ARDS, salbutamol increased numbers of circulating neutrophils but had no
effect on alveolar neutrophils.
Conclusion: At the onset of ALI/ARDS, there is increased neutrophil recruitment and activation. Physiological
concentrations of salbutamol did not alter neutrophil chemotaxis, viability or apoptosis in vitro. In vivo,
salbutamol increased circulating neutrophils, but had no effect on alveolar neutrophils or on neutrophil
activation. These data suggest that the beneficial effects of salbutamol in reducing lung water are unrelated to
modulation of neutrophil-dependent inflammatory pathways
Regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor bioactivity in patients with acute lung injury
Background: Reduced bioactive vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been demonstrated in
several inflammatory lung conditions including the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). sVEGFR-1,
a soluble form of VEGF-1 receptor, is a potent natural inhibitor of VEGF. We hypothesised that sVEGFR-1
plays an important role in the regulation of the bioactivity of VEGF within the lung in patients with ARDS.
Methods: Forty one patients with ARDS, 12 at risk of developing ARDS, and 16 normal controls were
studied. Bioactive VEGF, total VEGF, and sVEGFR-1 were measured by ELISA in plasma and
bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction for sVEGFR-1 was
performed on BAL cells.
Results: sVEGFR-1 was detectable in the BAL fluid of 48% (20/41) of patients with early ARDS (1.4–
54.8 ng/ml epithelial lining fluid (ELF)) compared with 8% (1/12) at risk patients (p = 0.017) and none of
the normal controls (p = 0.002). By day 4 sVEGFR-1 was detectable in only 2/18 ARDS patients
(p = 0.008). Patients with detectable sVEGFR-1 had lower ELF median (IQR) levels of bioactive VEGF than
those without detectable sVEGFR-1 (1415.2 (474.9–3192) pg/ml v 4761 (1349–7596.6) pg/ml, median
difference 3346 pg/ml (95% CI 305.1 to 14711.9), p = 0.016), but there was no difference in total VEGF
levels. BAL cells expressed mRNA for sVEGFR-1 and produced sVEGFR-1 protein which increased
following incubation with tumour necrosis factor a.
Conclusion: This study shows for the first time the presence of sVEGFR-1 in the BAL fluid of patients with
ARDS. This may explain the presence of reduced bioactive VEGF in patients early in the course of ARDS
Parallelism for Quantum Computation with Qudits
Robust quantum computation with d-level quantum systems (qudits) poses two
requirements: fast, parallel quantum gates and high fidelity two-qudit gates.
We first describe how to implement parallel single qudit operations. It is by
now well known that any single-qudit unitary can be decomposed into a sequence
of Givens rotations on two-dimensional subspaces of the qudit state space.
Using a coupling graph to represent physically allowed couplings between pairs
of qudit states, we then show that the logical depth of the parallel gate
sequence is equal to the height of an associated tree. The implementation of a
given unitary can then optimize the tradeoff between gate time and resources
used. These ideas are illustrated for qudits encoded in the ground hyperfine
states of the atomic alkalies Rb and Cs. Second, we provide a
protocol for implementing parallelized non-local two-qudit gates using the
assistance of entangled qubit pairs. Because the entangled qubits can be
prepared non-deterministically, this offers the possibility of high fidelity

The composition profile along the [001] growth direction of low-growth-rate InAs–GaAs quantum dots (QDs) has been determined using medium-energy ion scattering (MEIS). A linear profile of In concentration from 100% In at the top of the QDs to 20% at their base provides the best fit to MEIS energy spectra
Prestige and content biases together shape the cultural transmission of narratives
Context-based cultural transmission biases such as prestige are thought to have been a primary driver in shaping the dynamics of human cultural evolution. However, few empirical studies have measured the importance of prestige relative to other effects, such as the content biases present within transmitted information. Here, we report the findings of an experimental transmission study designed to compare the simultaneous effects of a high- or low-prestige model with the presence of content containing social, survival, emotional, moral, rational, or counterintuitive information. Results from multimodel inference reveal that prestige is a significant factor in determining salience and recall, but that several content biases, specifically social, survival, negative emotional, and biological counterintuitive information, are significantly more influential. Further, we find evidence that prestige serves as a conditional learning strategy when no content cues are available.
