    First observation of Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu decays

    Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the semileptonic decays Bs -> Ds+ X mu nu and Bs -> D0 K+ X mu nu are detected. Two structures are observed in the D0 K+ mass spectrum at masses consistent with the known D^+_{s1}(2536) and $D^{*+}_{s2}(2573) mesons. The measured branching fractions relative to the total Bs semileptonic rate are B(Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (3.3\pm 1.0\pm 0.4)%, and B(Bs -> D_{s1}^+ X munu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (5.4\pm 1.2\pm 0.5)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of the D_{s2}^{*+} state in Bs decays; we also measure its mass and width.Comment: 8 pages 2 figures. Published in Physics Letters

    Prompt K_short production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=0.9 TeV

    The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0.     Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D-0 meson and a muon are used to measure the bb; production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) mu b

    Functional role of Na(+)–HCO(3)(−) cotransport in migration of transformed renal epithelial cells

    Cell migration is crucial for immune defence, wound healing or formation of tumour metastases. It has been shown that the activity of the Na(+)–H(+) exchanger (NHE1) plays an important role in cell migration. However, so far it is unknown whether Na(+)– HCO(3)(−) cotransport (NBC), which has similar functions in the regulation of intracellular pH (pH(i)) as NHE1, is also involved in cell migration. We therefore isolated NHE-deficient Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK-F) cells and tested whether NBC compensates for NHE in pH(i) and cell volume regulation as well as in migration. Intracellular pH was measured with the fluorescent pH indicator 2â€Č7â€Č-bis(carboxyethyl)-5-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF). The expression of NBC isoforms was determined with semiquantitative PCR. Migration was monitored with time-lapse video microscopy and quantified as the displacement of the cell centre. We found that MDCK-F cells express the isoform NBC1 (SLCA4A gene product) at a much higher level than the isoform kNBC3 (SLCA4A8 gene product). This difference is even more pronounced in NHE-deficient cells so that NBC1 is likely to be the major acid extruder in these cells and the major mediator of propionate-induced cell volume increase. NHE-deficient MDCK-F cells migrate more slowly than normal MDCK-F cells. NBC activity promotes migration during an acute intracellular acid load and increases migratory speed and displacement on a short timescale (< 30 min) whereas it has no effect on the long-term behaviour of migrating MDCK-F cells. Taken together, our results show that NBC actvity, despite many functional similarities, does not have the same importance for cell migration as NHE1 activity
