    Phosphorus sources residual effects on tifton 85 production and nutritive value cultivated in a tropical weathered soil

    Acid reactions and low available phosphorus in tropical soils limit forage yield. The aim was to evaluate soil chemical characteristics pH, P and Mg, forage nutritive values, critical soil and plant P levels and the residual effect of each source. The experiment was in a greenhouse with a Rhodic Haplustox, loam texture. Experimental design was a 5 x 4 factorial with five replicates which phosphate fertilizers were triple superphosphate, reactive rock phosphates Gafsa and Arad, and fused magnesium phosphate powder and coarse, applied at rates of 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg kg-1 P and a control treatment without P. The effectiveness of rock phosphates increased due to their residual effect. The coarse fused magnesium phosphate resulted in the lowest efficiency. The P critical level in soil and plant were 18 mg kg-1 and 2.4 g kg-1, respectively. The increase of phosphorus rates provided an increase in crude protein content

    Association of Monosodium Glutamate Intake With Overweight in Chinese Adults: The INTERMAP Study

    Animal studies indicate that monosodium glutamate (MSG) can induce hypothalamic lesions and leptin resistance, possibly influencing energy balance, leading to overweight. This study examines the association between MSG intake and overweight in the human species. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 752 healthy Chinese (48.7% women), ages 40 to 59 years, randomly sampled from three rural villages in north and south China. The great majority of participants prepared their foods at home, without use of commercially processed foods. Diet was assessed with four in-depth multi-pass 24-hour recalls. Participants were asked to demonstrate MSG amounts added in food preparation. Amounts shaken out were weighed by trained interviewers. Overweight was defined as body mass index ≥25.0 kg/m2 or ≥23.0 (based on World Health Organization recommendations for Asian populations). Eighty-two percent of participants used MSG. Average intake was 0.33 gram/day (standard deviation=0.40). With adjustment for potential confounders including physical activity and total energy intake, MSG intake was positively related to body mass index. Prevalence of overweight was significantly higher in MSG users than non-users. For users in the highest tertile of MSG intake compared to non-users, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios of overweight (body mass index ≥23.0 and ≥25.0) were 2.10 (95% CI, 1.13–3.90, P for trend across four MSG categories=0.03) and 2.75 (95% CI, 1.28–5.95, P=0.04). This research provides human data that MSG intake may be associated with increased risk of overweight independent of physical activity and total energy intake

    Antiplatelet therapy with aspirin, clopidogrel, and dipyridamole versus clopidogrel alone or aspirin and dipyridamole in patients with acute cerebral ischaemia (TARDIS): a randomised, open-label, phase 3 superiority trial

    Background: Intensive antiplatelet therapy with three agents might be more effective than guideline treatment for preventing recurrent events in patients with acute cerebral ischaemia. We aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of intensive antiplatelet therapy (combined aspirin, clopidogrel, and dipyridamole) with that of guideline-based antiplatelet therapy. Methods: We did an international, prospective, randomised, open-label, blinded-endpoint trial in adult participants with ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) within 48 h of onset. Participants were assigned in a 1:1 ratio using computer randomisation to receive loading doses and then 30 days of intensive antiplatelet therapy (combined aspirin 75 mg, clopidogrel 75 mg, and dipyridamole 200 mg twice daily) or guideline-based therapy (comprising either clopidogrel alone or combined aspirin and dipyridamole). Randomisation was stratified by country and index event, and minimised with prognostic baseline factors, medication use, time to randomisation, stroke-related factors, and thrombolysis. The ordinal primary outcome was the combined incidence and severity of any recurrent stroke (ischaemic or haemorrhagic; assessed using the modified Rankin Scale) or TIA within 90 days, as assessed by central telephone follow-up with masking to treatment assignment, and analysed by intention to treat. This trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, number ISRCTN47823388. Findings: 3096 participants (1556 in the intensive antiplatelet therapy group, 1540 in the guideline antiplatelet therapy group) were recruited from 106 hospitals in four countries between April 7, 2009, and March 18, 2016. The trial was stopped early on the recommendation of the data monitoring committee. The incidence and severity of recurrent stroke or TIA did not differ between intensive and guideline therapy (93 [6%] participants vs 105 [7%]; adjusted common odds ratio [cOR] 0·90, 95% CI 0·67–1·20, p=0·47). By contrast, intensive antiplatelet therapy was associated with more, and more severe, bleeding (adjusted cOR 2·54, 95% CI 2·05–3·16, p<0·0001). Interpretation: Among patients with recent cerebral ischaemia, intensive antiplatelet therapy did not reduce the incidence and severity of recurrent stroke or TIA, but did significantly increase the risk of major bleeding. Triple antiplatelet therapy should not be used in routine clinical practice

    Seaweed compost for agricultural crop production

    This study manipulated the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C:N) of seaweed composts by varying the proportion of high N green seaweed (Ulva ohnoi) and high C sugarcane bagasse to assess their quality and suitability for use in agricultural crop production. Seaweed-bagasse mixes that had an initial C:N ratio greater than 18:1 (up to 50:1) could be transformed into a mature compost within 16 weeks. However, only composts with a high seaweed content and therefore low initial C:N (18 and 22:1) supported a consistently high rate of plant growth, even at low application rates. Sugarcane grown in these high seaweed composts had a 7-fold higher total above-ground biomass than low seaweed composts and a 4-fold higher total above-ground biomass than sugarcane grown in commercial compost that did not contain seaweed. Overall, the optimal initial C:N ratio for seaweed-based compost was 22:1 which corresponds to 82 % seaweed on a fresh weight basis. This ratio will produce a high quality mature compost whilst also ensuring that a high proportion of the nitrogen (>90 %) in the Ulva biomass is retained through the composting process

    Soil texture affects root penetration in Oxisols under sugarcane in Brazil

    Two field trials were set up in Brazil to investigate the effects of soil tillage practices on soil physical condition, root distribution, and sugarcane yield in areas under sandy loam and clayey soils. Additionally, we identified the critical limits for sugarcane root development in soils under contrasting texture using the boundary line approach. The treatments with two tillage practices (conventional tillage - CT and no-tillage - NT) were established in a randomized block design with four replications within two paired areas, one under crop rotation and the other under bare fallow during the sugarcane replanting period. Measurements of soil bulk density (BD), macroporosity (MaP), microporosity (MiP), soil resistance to penetration (Pr), root biomass (RB) and sugarcane yield were performed. Soil MaP and MiP were not affected by the treatments in both soils. The Pr values were higher in NT than CT in both sites, especially in surface layers. For clayey soil, BD values were higher in NT at depths of 0.0–0.1 and 0.1–0.2 m in crop rotation and at the depth of 0.1–0.2 m in bare fallow area. Sugarcane yield for clayey soil (153 Mg ha −1 ) was more than twice that measured at the sandy soil (58 Mg ha −1 ). In general, the CT promoted a slight increase root production and did not affect sugarcane yields. In both soil types, most part of RB (60 to 70%) was concentrated near the sugarcane row (horizontal aspect) and within the top 0.4 m of depth (vertical profile), indicating that much of the root system is retained within the planting furrow. Our study demonstrates the potential for using the boundary line method to estimate the effects of BD and Pr on root growth. Root system was severely restricted at sandy soil when BD > 1.70 Mg m −3 and Pr > 1.5 MPa, while for clayey soil the critical values were BD > 1.25 Mg m −3 and Pr > 2.5 MPa. While our study provides valuable insights, we advocate that further studies should be done to better understand the effect of differing levels of BD and Pr for sugarcane yields in soils of different textures
