An advanced technology space station for the year 2025, study and concepts
A survey was made of potential space station missions that might exist in the 2020 to 2030 time period. Also, a brief study of the current state-of-the-art of the major subsystems was undertaken, and trends in technologies that could impact the subsystems were reviewed. The results of the survey and study were then used to arrive at a conceptual design of a space station for the year 2025. Factors addressed in the conceptual design included requirements for artificial gravity, synergies between subsystems, and the use of robotics. Suggestions are made relative to more in-depth studies concerning the conceptual design and alternative configurations
Metacarpophalangeal pattern profile analysis of a sample drawn from a North Wales population
This is tha author's PDF version of an article published in Annals of human biology© 2001. The definitive version is available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journalsSexual dimorphism and population differences were investigated using metacarpophalangeal pattern profile (MCPP) analysis. Although it is an anthropmetric technique, MCPP analysis is more frequently used in genetic syndrome analysis and has been under-used in the study of human groups. The present analysis used a series of hand radiographics from Gwynedd, North Wales, to make comparisons, first, between the sexes within the sample and then with previously reported data from Japan. The Welsh sexes showed MCPP analyses that indicated size and shape differences but certain similarities in shape were also evident. Differences with the Japanese data were more marked. MCPP anlysis is a potentially useful anthropmetric technique but requires further statistical development
Analysis of a rotating advanced-technology space station for the year 2025
An analysis is made of several aspects of an advanced-technology rotating space station configuration generated under a previous study. The analysis includes examination of several modifications of the configuration, interface with proposed launch systems, effects of low-gravity environment on human subjects, and the space station assembly sequence. Consideration was given also to some aspects of space station rotational dynamics, surface charging, and the possible application of tethers
Some operational aspects of a rotating advanced-technology space station for the year 2025
The study of an Advanced Technology Space Station which would utilize the capabilities of subsystems projected for the time frame of the years 2000 to 2025 is discussed. The study includes tradeoffs of nuclear versus solar dynamic power systems that produce power outputs of 2.5 megawatts and analyses of the dynamics of the spacecraft of which portions are rotated for artificial gravity. The design considerations for the support of a manned Mars mission from low Earth orbit are addressed. The studies extend to on-board manufacturing, internal gas composition effects, and locomotion and material transfer under artificial gravity forces. The report concludes with an assessment of technology requirements for the Advanced Technology Space Station

A Deep 150 MHz GMRT Survey in Eridanus
We present results of a 150 MHz survey of a field centered on Epsilon
Eridani, undertaken with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The survey
covers an area with a diameter of 2 deg, has a spatial resolution of 30" and a
noise level of 3.1 mJy at the pointing centre. These observations provide a
deeper and higher resolution view of the 150 MHz radio sky than the 7C survey
(although the 7C survey covers a much larger area). A total of 113 sources were
detected, most are point-like, but 20 are extended. We present an analysis of
these sources, in conjunction with the NVSS (at 1.4 GHz) and VLSS (at 74 MHz).
This process allowed us to identify 5 Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) radio sources
that are candidate high redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs). In addition, we have
derived the dN/dS distribution for these observations and compare our results
with other low frequency radio surveys.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
Radio Weak Gravitational Lensing with VLA and MERLIN
We carry out an exploratory weak gravitational lensing analysis on a combined
VLA and MERLIN radio data set: a deep (3.3 micro-Jy beam^-1 rms noise) 1.4 GHz
image of the Hubble Deep Field North. We measure the shear estimator
distribution at this radio sensitivity for the first time, finding a similar
distribution to that of optical shear estimators for HST ACS data in this
field. We examine the residual systematics in shear estimation for the radio
data, and give cosmological constraints from radio-optical shear
cross-correlation functions. We emphasize the utility of cross-correlating
shear estimators from radio and optical data in order to reduce the impact of
systematics. Unexpectedly we find no evidence of correlation between optical
and radio intrinsic ellipticities of matched objects; this result improves the
properties of optical-radio lensing cross-correlations. We explore the
ellipticity distribution of the radio counterparts to optical sources
statistically, confirming the lack of correlation; as a result we suggest a
connected statistical approach to radio shear measurements.Comment: 16 pages with 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS; Minor

Urban High-School Girls\u27 Sense of Relatedness and Their Engagement in Physical Education
A sense of relatedness is individuals\u27 views about themselves as connected to others and worthy of love and respect from others. Using the Self-System Model of Motivational Development as the framework, this study was designed to examine associations of urban high-school girls\u27 relatedness toward teachers and peers with their behavioral and emotional engagements in physical education. Participants (N = 184, ages 15-18) completed questionnaires assessing relevant psychological and behavioral constructs while their teachers also completed corresponding measures during classes. Regression analyses revealed that relatedness toward teachers and peers had direct and interactive roles in both behavioral and emotional engagements. Although relatedness to teachers was the most pronounced predictor, feeling related to peers might have an added effect for the students who did not feel connected. The findings support that nurturing quality relationships between and among both teachers and peers may hold promise for enhancing learning
Physical Education Teachers\u27 Experiences With Remote Instruction During The Initial Phase Of The Covid-19 Pandemic
This study investigated physical education (PE) teachers\u27 experiences with remote instruction in the United States during the initial outbreak of COVID-19. PE teachers (n = 4,362) from all 50 states completed a survey identifying their experiences with remote instruction in May, 2020. Survey responses were analyzed by geographic region, district type, and school level. Teachers reported having students submit assignments (51% yes), using video instruction (37% yes), being less effective when instructing remotely (20% yes), and emphasizing student outcomes focused on health-related fitness (32% yes), and physical activity value/ enjoyment (43% yes). Access to technology (40% yes) and required student assignments (43% yes) were lowest among teachers from the South. Rural teachers reported the least access to technology (37% yes) and rated themselves as least effective (24% yes). Secondary level teachers reported the highest percentage of required assignments (84% yes). Teachers\u27 responses identify unique challenges to delivering equitable and effective remote PE instruction
