On Computability of Equilibria in Markets with Production
Although production is an integral part of the Arrow-Debreu market model,
most of the work in theoretical computer science has so far concentrated on
markets without production, i.e., the exchange economy. This paper takes a
significant step towards understanding computational aspects of markets with
production.
We first define the notion of separable, piecewise-linear concave (SPLC)
production by analogy with SPLC utility functions. We then obtain a linear
complementarity problem (LCP) formulation that captures exactly the set of
equilibria for Arrow-Debreu markets with SPLC utilities and SPLC production,
and we give a complementary pivot algorithm for finding an equilibrium. This
settles a question asked by Eaves in 1975 of extending his complementary pivot
algorithm to markets with production.
Since this is a path-following algorithm, we obtain a proof of membership of
this problem in PPAD, using Todd, 1976. We also obtain an elementary proof of
existence of equilibrium (i.e., without using a fixed point theorem),
rationality, and oddness of the number of equilibria. We further give a proof
of PPAD-hardness for this problem and also for its restriction to markets with
linear utilities and SPLC production. Experiments show that our algorithm runs
fast on randomly chosen examples, and unlike previous approaches, it does not
suffer from issues of numerical instability. Additionally, it is strongly
polynomial when the number of goods or the number of agents and firms is
constant. This extends the result of Devanur and Kannan (2008) to markets with
production.
Finally, we show that an LCP-based approach cannot be extended to PLC
(non-separable) production, by constructing an example which has only
irrational equilibria.Comment: An extended abstract will appear in SODA 201
On the extra phase correction to the semiclassical spin coherent-state propagator
The problem of an origin of the Solary-Kochetov extra-phase contribution to
the naive semiclassical form of a generalized phase-space propagator is
addressed with the special reference to the su(2) spin case which is the most
important in applications. While the extra-phase correction to a flat
phase-space propagator can straightforwardly be shown to appear as a difference
between the principal and the Weyl symbols of a Hamiltonian in the
next-to-leading order expansion in the semiclassical parameter, the same
statement for the semiclassical spin coherent-state propagator holds provided
the Holstein-Primakoff representation of the su(2) algebra generators is
employed.Comment: 19 pages, no figures; a more general treatment is presented, some
references are added, title is slightly changed; submitted to JM
Diabolical points in the magnetic spectrum of Fe_8 molecules
The magnetic molecule Fe_8 has been predicted and observed to have a rich
pattern of degeneracies in its spectrum as an external magnetic field is
varied. These degeneracies have now been recognized to be diabolical points.
This paper analyzes the diabolicity and all essential properties of this system
using elementary perturbation theory. A variety of arguments is gievn to
suggest that an earlier semiclassical result for a subset of these points may
be exactly true for arbitrary spinComment: uses europhys.sty package; 3 embedded ps figure
Antimicrobial activity of skin secretions isolated from Indian toad, Bufo melanostictus Schneider 1799
Amphibians like toads have been known to secrete antimicrobial secretions outside their body into their environments, through skin pores and parotid glands. Toad skin-secretions contain four types of compounds namely, biogenic amines, bufadienolides, alkaloids & steroids and peptides & proteins. Bulk of research relating to amphibian antimicrobial secretions has been done on frogs. In toads, such research has only been done in South America, Europe and China. Antimicrobial secretions vary considerably from specie-to-specie and drastically across various biomes. This prompted us to examine and confirm presence of antimicrobial activity (if any) in Indian Common Toad (Bufo melanostictus Schneider 1799) skin secretions since; no such analysis had been previously done on this toad which is found all across the South-east Asia. The antibacterial potency of toad skin secretions was tested against the bacteria, Escherichia coli. After running preliminary antibacterial analysis assays, we found that these cutaneous secretions retrieved from Indian Common Toad possessed potential bactericidal activity. The results that we got confirmed that some unexplored bactericidal components were present in skin secretions of these toads. These conclusions call for further research into biochemistry and molecular characterization of these components
Spin Tunneling in Magnetic Molecules: Quasisingular Perturbations and Discontinuous SU(2) Instantons
Spin coherent state path integrals with discontinuous semiclassical paths are
investigated with special reference to a realistic model for the magnetic
degrees of freedom in the Fe8 molecular solid. It is shown that such paths are
essential to a proper understanding of the phenomenon of quenched spin
tunneling in these molecules. In the Fe8 problem, such paths are shown to arise
as soon as a fourth order anisotropy term in the energy is turned on, making
this term a singular perturbation from the semiclassical point of view. The
instanton approximation is shown to quantitatively explain the magnetic field
dependence of the tunnel splitting, as well as agree with general rules for the
number of quenching points allowed for a given value of spin. An accurate
approximate formula for the spacing between quenching points is derived
