    Multiplatform serum metabolic phenotyping combined with pathway mapping to identify biochemical differences in smokers

    Aim: Determining perturbed biochemical functions associated with tobacco smoking should be helpful for establishing causal relationships between exposure and adverse events. Results: A multiplatform comparison of serum of smokers (n = 55) and never-smokers (n = 57) using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, UPLC–MS and statistical modeling revealed clustering of the classes, distinguished by metabolic biomarkers. The identified metabolites were subjected to metabolic pathway enrichment, modeling adverse biological events using available databases. Perturbation of metabolites involved in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular diseases and cancer were identified and discussed. Conclusion: Combining multiplatform metabolic phenotyping with knowledge-based mapping gives mechanistic insights into disease development, which can be applied to next-generation tobacco and nicotine products for comparative risk assessment

    Childbirth care in Egypt: a repeat cross-sectional analysis using Demographic and Health Surveys between 1995 and 2014 examining use of care, provider mix and immediate postpartum care content.

    BACKGROUND: Egypt has achieved important reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality and experienced increases in the proportion of births attended by skilled professionals. However, substandard care has been highlighted as one of the avoidable causes behind persisting maternal deaths. This paper describes changes over time in the use of childbirth care in Egypt, focusing on location and sector of provision (public versus private) and the content of immediate postpartum care. METHODS: We used five Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in Egypt between 1995 and 2014 to explore national and regional trends in childbirth care. To assess content of care in 2014, we calculated the caesarean section rate and the percentage of women delivering in a facility who reported receiving four components of immediate postpartum care for themselves and their newborn. RESULTS: Between 1995 and 2014, the percentage of women delivering in health facilities increased from 35 to 87% and women delivering with a skilled birth attendant from 49 to 92%. The percentage of women delivering in a private facility nearly quadrupled from 16 to 63%. In 2010-2014, fewer than 2% of women delivering in public or private facilities received all four immediate postpartum care components measured. CONCLUSIONS: Egypt achieved large increases in the percentage of women delivering in facilities and with skilled birth attendants. However, most women and newborns did not receive essential elements of high quality immediate postpartum care. The large shift to private facilities may highlight failures of public providers to meet women's expectations. Additionally, the content (quality) of childbirth care needs to improve in both sectors. Immediate action is required to understand and address the drivers of poor quality, including insufficient resources, perverse incentives, poor compliance and enforcement of existing standards, and providers' behaviours moving between private and public sectors. Otherwise, Egypt risks undermining the benefits of high coverage because of substandard quality childbirth care

    Anxiolytic-like effect of Lippia alba essential oil: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial

    Aim: This study was conducted to examine whether aromatherapy with essential oil of Lippia alba can reduce anxiety levels in a normal population. Methods: The oil was extracted by hycirodistillation for 3 hours using a modified Clevenger-type apparatus and then chemical composition was investigated by a corn. bination of gas chromatography analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Moreover, a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted, where 62 participants were divided into two groups, comprising a control group treated with placebo, and an experimental group (EG) treated with aromatherapy based on Lippia alba essential oil. The anxiety index was evaluated pretest by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Measures were taken twice: during pretest and posttest. Results: The chemical analysis showed that carvone was the main component (62,8%), State and trait anxiety scores showed a decrease in the posttest study phase in corn. parison with pretest in the EG (p < 0.005 for state anxiety and p < 0.05 for trait anxiety). Cohen's d score was 1.06 in state anxiety, while it was 0,72 for trait anxiety. The percentages of change showed reductions of anxiety variable ranging between 15.50% for state anxiety and 12.25% for trait anxiety. Conclusion: These results suggest that aromatherapy based on essential oil of Lippia alba may be useful as a means to counteract anxiety

    Analyzing policymaking for tuberculosis control in Nigeria

    Today, tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the major threats to humankind, being the first cause of death by an infectious disease worldwide. TB is a communicable chronic disease that every year affects 10 million people and kills almost 2 million people in the world. The main key factors fueling the disease are the progressive urbanization of the population and poverty-related socioeconomic factors.Moreover, the lack of effective tools for TB diagnosis, prevention, and treatment has decisively contributed to the lack of an effectivemodel to predict TB spread. In Nigeria, the rapid urbanization along with unprecedented population growth is causing TB to be endemic.This paper proposes a mathematical model to evaluate TB burden in Nigeria by using data obtained from the local TB control program in the community. This research aims to point out effective strategies that could be used to effectively reduce TB burden and death due to TB in this country at different levels.The study shows that efforts should be oriented to more active case finding rather than increasing the treatment effectiveness only. It also reveals that the persistence of the disease is related to a large number of latently infected individuals and quantifies the lives that could be saved by increasing the notification rate using active case finding strategy.We conclude that undiagnosis is the bottleneck that needs to be overcome in addition to the incorporation, improvement, and/or strengthening of treatmentmanagement and other essential TB control measures in Nigeria.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

A novel methodology is presented for the preparation of magnetic zeolite-based catalysts, allowing more efficient radiofrequency heating.     The Maximal U(1)LU(1)_L Inverse Seesaw from d=5d=5 Operator and Oscillating Asymmetric Sneutrino Dark Matter

    The maximal U(1)LU(1)_L supersymmetric inverse seesaw mechanism (MLLSIS) provides a natural way to relate asymmetric dark matter (ADM) with neutrino physics. In this paper we point out that, MLLSIS is a natural outcome if one dynamically realizes the inverse seesaw mechanism in the next-to minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) via the dimension-five operator (N)2S2/M(N)^2S^2/M_*, with SS the NMSSM singlet developing TeV scale VEV; it slightly violates lepton number due to the suppression by the fundamental scale MM_*, thus preserving U(1)LU(1)_L maximally. The resulting sneutrino is a distinguishable ADM candidate, oscillating and favored to have weak scale mass. A fairly large annihilating cross section of such a heavy ADM is available due to the presence of singlet.Comment: journal versio

    Conserved Genetic Interactions between Ciliopathy Complexes Cooperatively Support Ciliogenesis and Ciliary Signaling

    Mutations in genes encoding cilia proteins cause human ciliopathies, diverse disorders affecting many tissues. Individual genes can be linked to ciliopathies with dramatically different phenotypes, suggesting that genetic modifiers may participate in their pathogenesis. The ciliary transition zone contains two protein complexes affected in the ciliopathies Meckel syndrome (MKS) and nephronophthisis (NPHP). The BBSome is a third protein complex, affected in the ciliopathy Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS). We tested whether mutations in MKS, NPHP and BBS complex genes modify the phenotypic consequences of one another in both C. elegans and mice. To this end, we identified TCTN-1, the C. elegans ortholog of vertebrate MKS complex components called Tectonics, as an evolutionarily conserved transition zone protein. Neither disruption of TCTN-1 alone or together with MKS complex components abrogated ciliary structure in C. elegans. In contrast, disruption of TCTN-1 together with either of two NPHP complex components, NPHP-1 or NPHP-4, compromised ciliary structure. Similarly, disruption of an NPHP complex component and the BBS complex component BBS-5 individually did not compromise ciliary structure, but together did. As in nematodes, disrupting two components of the mouse MKS complex did not cause additive phenotypes compared to single mutants. However, disrupting both Tctn1 and either Nphp1 or Nphp4 exacerbated defects in ciliogenesis and cilia-associated developmental signaling, as did disrupting both Tctn1 and the BBSome component Bbs1. Thus, we demonstrate that ciliary complexes act in parallel to support ciliary function and suggest that human ciliopathy phenotypes are altered by genetic interactions between different ciliary biochemical complexes

    Aerothermodynamic Analysis of a Reentry Brazilian Satellite

    This work deals with a computational investigation on the small ballistic reentry Brazilian vehicle SARA (acronyms for SAt\'elite de Reentrada Atmosf\'erica). Hypersonic flows over the vehicle SARA at zero-degree angle of attack in a chemical equilibrium and thermal non-equilibrium are modeled by the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, which has become the main technique for studying complex multidimensional rarefied flows, and that properly accounts for the non-equilibrium aspects of the flows. The emphasis of this paper is to examine the behavior of the primary properties during the high altitude portion of SARA reentry. In this way, velocity, density, pressure and temperature field are investigated for altitudes of 100, 95, 90, 85 and 80 km. In addition, comparisons based on geometry are made between axisymmetric and planar two-dimensional configurations. Some significant differences between these configurations were noted on the flowfield structure in the reentry trajectory. The analysis showed that the flow disturbances have different influence on velocity, density, pressure and temperature along the stagnation streamline ahead of the capsule nose. It was found that the stagnation region is a thermally stressed zone. It was also found that the stagnation region is a zone of strong compression, high wall pressure. Wall pressure distributions are compared with those of available experimental data and good agreement is found along the spherical nose for the altitude range investigated.Comment: The paper will be published in Vol. 42 of the Brazilian Journal of Physic
