    Mineralization of hetero bi-functional reactive dye in aqueous solution by Fenton and photo-Fenton reactions

    This study focused on the advanced oxidation of the hetero bi-functional reactive dye Sumifix Supra Yellow 3RF (CI Reactive Yellow 145) using dark Fenton and photo-Fenton conditions in a lab-scale experiment. A 2(3) factorial design was used to evaluate the effects of the three key factors: temperature, Fe(II) and H2O2 concentrations, for a dye concentration of 250 mg L-1 with chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 172 mg L-1 O-2 at pH = 3. The response function was the COD reduction. This methodology lets us find the effects and interactions of the studied variables and their roles in the efficiency of the treatment process. In the optimization, the correlation coefficients for the model (R-2) were 0.948 and 0.965 for Fenton and photo-Fenton treatments, respectively. Under optimized reaction conditions: pH = 3, temperature = 298 K, [H2O2] = 11.765 mM and [Fe(II)] = 1.075 mM; 60 min of treatment resulted in a 79% and 92.2% decrease in COD, for the dye taken as the model organic compound, after Fenton and photo-Fenton treatments, respectivelyPostprint (author’s final draft

    A gliclazide complex based on palladium towards Alzheimer's disease: promising protective activity against Aβ-induced toxicity in C. elegans

    A new palladium coordination compound based on gliclazide with the chemical formula [Pd(glz)2] (where glz = gliclazide) has been synthesized and characterised. The structural characterization reveals that this material consists of mononuclear units formed by a Pd2+ ion coordinated to two molecules of the glz ligand, in which palladium ions exhibit a distorted plane-square coordination sphere. This novel material behaves like a good and selective inhibitor of butyrylcholinesterase, one of the most relevant therapeutic targets against Alzheimer’s disease. Analysis of the enzyme kinetics showed a mixed mode of inhibition, the title compound being capable of interacting with both the free enzyme and the enzyme–substrate complex. Finally, the palladium compound shows promising protective activity against Ab-induced toxicity in the Caenorhabditis elegans model, which has never been reported

    El objetivo de la Red ha sido compartir metodologías de detección, análisis y proyecto en la interacción entre sociedad y paisaje en áreas específicas del Levante español, metodologías que pudieran ser ensayadas por estudiantes de Sociología, Arquitectura y Geografía en la Universidad de Alicante en el marco de sus prácticas de campo en sus asignaturas de Grado.El ámbito socio-geográfico preciso ha sido el término municipal de Sella en la Marina Baixa, incluyendo unos valles del término municipal de Benimantell cuyo acceso natural se produce desde Sella. Los objetivos básicos de las metodologías compartidas se han referido a cómo el paisaje semiabandonado y abancalado junto a ríos y acequias presenta trazas identitarias aprovechables (sendas de montaña que conectan masías, enclaves geomorfológicos, fincas en desuso, cuencas visuales, masas forestales…) para encontrar nuevos usos y formas de habitar el espacio natural, o formas de paisaje convertible en aula de escuela primaria, o formas lúdico-musicales de disfrute en la naturaleza.El trabajo de los integrantes de la Red consistió en diseñar los protocolos de interacción para situaciones flexibles dentro de los cronogramas formativos reglados (Grados de Sociología, Arquitectura, Geografía) definiendo sesiones de colaboración, desplazamientos al lugar, metodologías compartidas y encuentros para debatir los resultados. Los resultados de la experiencia se han llegado a publicar por el momento en dos comunicaciones en Congresos y Jornadas de Redes en la UA

    Prevention, Diagnosis and Management of Post-Surgical Mediastinitis in Adults Consensus Guidelines of the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular Infections (SEICAV), the Spanish Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (SECTCV) and the Biomedical Research Centre Network for Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) doctors and radiologists. Despite the clinical and economic consequences of sternal wound infections, to date, there are no specific guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis and management of mediastinitis based on a multidisciplinary consensus. The purpose of the present document is to provide evidencebased guidance on the most effective diagnosis and management of patients who have experienced or are at risk of developing a post-surgical mediastinitis infection in order to optimise patient outcomes and the process of care. The intended users of the document are health care providers who help patients make decisions regarding their treatment, aiming to optimise the benefits and minimise any harm as well as the workload.Funding: J.M.
