Experiences with a preliminary NICE/SPAR structural analysis system
Development of a new structural analysis system based on the original SPAR finite element code and the NICE system is described. The system is denoted NICE/SPAR. NICE was designed at Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and contains data management utilities, a command language interpreter, and a command language definition for integrating engineering computational modules. SPAR is a system of programs used for finite element structural analysis developed for NASA by Engineering Information Systems, Inc. It includes many complementary structural analysis and utility functions which communicate through a common database. The work on NICE/SPAR was motivated by requirements for a highly modular and flexible structural analysis system to use as a tool in carrying out research in computational methods and exploring new computer hardware. Analysis examples are presented which demonstrate the benefits gained from a combination of the NICE command language with the SPAR computational modules
Design and construction of a point-contact spectroscopy rig with lateral scanning capability
The design and realization of a cryogenic rig for point-contact spectroscopy
measurements in the needle-anvil configuration is presented. Thanks to the use
of two piezoelectric nano-positioners, the tip can move along the vertical
() and horizontal () direction and thus the rig is suitable to probe
different regions of a sample \textit{in situ}. Moreover, it can also form
double point-contacts on different facets of a single crystal for achieving,
e.g., an interferometer configuration for phase-sensitive measurements. For the
latter purpose, the sample holder can also host a Helmholtz coil for applying a
small transverse magnetic field to the junction. A semi-rigid coaxial cable can
be easily added for studying the behavior of Josephson junctions under
microwave irradiation. The rig can be detached from the probe and thus used
with different cryostats. The performance of this new probe has been tested in
a Quantum Design PPMS system by conducting point-contact Andreev reflection
measurements on Nb thin films over large areas as a function of temperature and

Energy efficient engine sector combustor rig test program
Under the NASA-sponsored Energy Efficient Engine program, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft has successfully completed a comprehensive combustor rig test using a 90-degree sector of an advanced two-stage combustor with a segmented liner. Initial testing utilized a combustor with a conventional louvered liner and demonstrated that the Energy Efficient Engine two-stage combustor configuration is a viable system for controlling exhaust emissions, with the capability to meet all aerothermal performance goals. Goals for both carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons were surpassed and the goal for oxides of nitrogen was closely approached. In another series of tests, an advanced segmented liner configuration with a unique counter-parallel FINWALL cooling system was evaluated at engine sea level takeoff pressure and temperature levels. These tests verified the structural integrity of this liner design. Overall, the results from the program have provided a high level of confidence to proceed with the scheduled Combustor Component Rig Test Program
Resonance structures in the multichannel quantum defect theory for the photofragmentation processes involving one closed and many open channels
The transformation introduced by Giusti-Suzor and Fano and extended by
Lecomte and Ueda for the study of resonance structures in the multichannel
quantum defect theory (MQDT) is used to reformulate MQDT into the forms having
one-to-one correspondence with those in Fano's configuration mixing (CM) theory
of resonance for the photofragmentation processes involving one closed and many
open channels. The reformulation thus allows MQDT to have the full power of the
CM theory, still keeping its own strengths such as the fundamental description
of resonance phenomena without an assumption of the presence of a discrete

The Megamaser Cosmology Project. X. High Resolution Maps and Mass Constraint for SMBHs
We present high resolution (sub-mas) VLBI maps of nuclear H2O megamasers for
seven galaxies. In UGC6093, the well-aligned systemic masers and high-velocity
masers originate in an edge-on, flat disk and we determine the mass of the
central SMBH to be M_SMBH = 2.58*10^7Msun(+-7%). For J1346+5228, the
distribution of masers is consistent with a disk, but the faint high-velocity
masers are only marginally detected, and we constrain the mass of the SMBH to
be in the range 1.5-2.0*10^7Msun. The origin of the masers in Mrk1210 is less
clear, as the systemic and high-velocity masers are misaligned and show a
disorganized velocity structure. We present one possible model in which the
masers originate in a tilted, warped disk, but we do not rule out the
possibility of other explanations including outflow masers. In NGC6926, we
detect a set of redshifted masers, clustered within a pc of each other, and a
single blueshifted maser about 4.4pc away, an offset that would be unusually
large for a maser disk system. Nevertheless, if it is a disk system, we
estimate the enclosed mass to be M_SMBH<4.8*10^7 Msun . For NGC5793, we detect
redshifted masers spaced about 1.4pc from a clustered set of blueshifted
features. The orientation of the structure supports a disk scenario as
suggested by Hagiwara et al.(2001). We estimate the enclosed mass to be M
SMBH<1.3*10^7 Msun. For NGC2824 and J0350-0127, the masers may be associated
with pc or sub-pc scale jets or outflows.Comment: Accepted by Ap
Radio Emission from the Intermediate-mass Black Hole in the Globular Cluster G1
We have used the Very Large Array (VLA) to search for radio emission from the
globular cluster G1 (Mayall-II) in M31. G1 has been reported by Gebhardt et al.
to contain an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass of ~2 x 10^4
solar masses. Radio emission was detected within an arcsecond of the cluster
center with an 8.4 GHz power of 2 x 10^{15} W/Hz. The radio/X-ray ratio of G1
is a few hundred times higher than that expected for a high-mass X-ray binary
in the cluster center, but is consistent with the expected value for accretion
onto an IMBH with the reported mass. A pulsar wind nebula is also a possible
candidate for the radio and X-ray emission from G1; future high-sensitivity
VLBI observations might distinguish between this possibility and an IMBH. If
the radio source is an IMBH, and similar accretion and outflow processes occur
for hypothesized ~ 1000-solar-mass black holes in Milky Way globular clusters,
they are within reach of the current VLA and should be detectable easily by the
